I have a 71 Champ as well...funny thing I restored it 11 years ago when this video was made, and I was living about a twenty minute drive from y'all.

I'm playing my 75 Champ right now, and I'm really enjoying the natural distortion. I am using a compressor and a reverb unit. I am boosting the signal with the compressor volume. The Champ needs a tiny signal boost in my opinion. I'm playing country rock and so the solos require some boost. With the boost the solos scream out so sweetly. No overdrive pedal can come close to this sound.

1971SuperLead try installing a 12bz7 in place of the first 12ax7

Sin sin sinner Thanks for the tip. I found a message from someone who knew a little about them. "They draw twice the current of a 12AX7, and the glass envelope is about 3/8" taller. If your amp calls for 12AX7, and can tolerate those additional requirements, you can sub a 12AX7. As Prairie Dawg said, they do tend to be quite microphonic. My experience has also brought me to this conclusion. HOWEVER, if you can purchase them from a trusted tube seller who will audio-test for microphony, you can work around that drawback - for the most part. I highly recommend Jim McShane, who has provided me perfect 12BZ7 every time (thanks Jim! :aok). Another consideration is that they are relatively inexpensive on eBay, and you can risk trying a sample or two. If you're lucky, you may get a relatively non-microphonic one. But if it is microphonic, it may still be a fun tube to try in your phase-inverter position (if you've got a 12AX7 there now) - microphony will not be a problem in the PI. In my listening experience, these 12BZ7 are very, very clear (articulate), and tend to emphasize treble a bit. They also add about 1.5-2 dB volume boost, and can stay "clean" while doing so. Very nice tubes, in the right position. I use them in Mesa Boogie Triaxis (V5 = master volume output) and 20/20 amp (V1 = first input for each channel of this stereo power amp). They don't do well in combos, typically (microphony), but I do use one in V3 (= Reverb recovery and second gain stage/driver) of my Victoria Regal II. With the extra gain, you can turn down volumes to the same level (as before you put in the 12BZ7), and effectively drop the noise floor a dB or two. But I caution you to use only one per amp, as the extra heater current can add up to become a problem." Cool.

1971SuperLead In five watt Supro's and Gretch amps made by them we sub a gz34 for the 5y3 and get a lot more clean head room and haven't had a issue with reliability.

A 75' with a pine cab?? I thought they switched to MDF by then... Is the speaker baffle glued in place? You got a great deal at that price in £.
