Thanks. In 1983-1984 I lived in Beijing, and nearly all the bicycles were rod and stirrup. Bicycle mechanics squatted on sidewalks. A flat was repaired for 20p. I like the rod brakes on my bike, actually. Worked fine.

Just starting here.. Working on one.. A 28x1.5 wheeled Raleigh tourist for a friend..need brake reinstall help..already learning 6 or so mins in.
if you want to replicate conditions that most of us have to deal with fixing a bike try doing it on a narrow apartment balcony with a width just slightly bigger than your average bloke...that already has a chair or two on it with a GF's dead potted plant in a big pot on the balcony as well making the space even tighter....absolutely no specialized bike tools and a basic tool set that friends have borrowed some of those tools and not returned....

This style of brake handle is timeless. It would be cool for there to be designed a visually similar handle, to be fitted onto a modern parallel Dutch style handlebar from the likes of Dutch Bike Bits, to interface with modern brake cables. Instead of using the old style attachments that can't be reinstalled, it would use the modern clamp style attachment. Maybe it's a silly pursuit just to get a certain look, but it looks cool and I want it on a modern bike :)

Good to see a more diy approach. I still use all the old bicycle spanners you find on car boot sales and basic home toolkit, don’t have a stand either. I use a black & decker workbench sometimes. Nice bike, is it possible to temporarily convert to side pull caliper brakes for modern traffic?

Hi, I've recently purchased what I believe to be a 1978 raleigh superb made in the August of that year. Its all original I found a date stamp on the rear Sturmey Archer hub... I'm just not sure entirely if it is a superb or a similar model. I don't suppose I could email you a photo by any chance? Your channel is incredible! And relaxing.

Brilliant video thanks for this. Why do you advise never to remove the brake lever carriers? You say I'll "never get them back in"..... oh dear, I need to do this as I am restoring the whole bike!! How can I find out how to achieve this impossible task....??

It's to do with how the handlebars are made. Those brake lever anchors screw into specially shaped nuts that are on the inside of the handlebar. They would do this in the factory when the handlebar was still just a streight peice of steel pipe, and once they were attached the whole thing would be bent into the shape of handlebars. So if you unscrew the anchors, those inside nuts don't have anything holding them in place anymore and they immediately come loose, and you've no way of getting them back where they should be. It's completely impossible, you'd need to be able to walk through walls.

I have a similar bike with a 26 x 1 3/8 tire. Will a wider tire fit? I do have the fenders. Mine is a 1970 raleigh sports. Thank you.

All tyres in the “590” rim size are the same width. However some brands seem to be wider in actuality. Schwalbe Delta Cruiser are the widest and most comfy in this size. Other 26” sizes do not fit the rim. Always look for 590 on the tyre
