A friend I used to know would buy interesting clothing from vintage stores. She had a vintage bra like I've never seen before, I fell in love with it. It was like a small bolero top. The short sleeves were what kept everything supported and they were made of a mesh fabric for airflow. The underarm was made in a more open mesh fabric. This was the best bra I have ever seen and it surely would be very comfortable to wear due to the sleeves aiding the support mechanism. I have been looking everywhere for an image of that style but cannot find it, so I may have to combine a bolero top with a bra and come out with something close. But it may be difficult to reproduce where the seams go as the entire design was very stylish.

@@jennifersilves4195 you don’t need to handwash them, just put them in a underwear laundry bag, nicely folded and wash them without other heavy clothing items, just underwear, on a very gentle machine program. Pretty much all washing machines nowadays have a selection of programs for different types of laundry. Also, don’t use fabric softener if they are made of synthetic fabrics. I wash them this way and they last me a very long time. Of course, the quality of the product matters as well.

The frustrating thing about mass produced cup sizes… in order to get a deeper cup you must also go wider. I often find cups to be plenty wide for me but not deep enough for my “projection” (for lack of a better term) and the center does not lay flat on my sternum between my breasts. I’ve found Panache and some other European brands have deeper projection and are pretty also, though still limited in my 36G size, but they are very expensive, online only. Making my own sounds like a viable alternative! Very interesting topic. Thank you for discussing!

I have a similar problem. One thing I’ve noticed is, as the cup size goes up, the cup and wire get taller. But I don’t need them to get taller. In fact, I’m short waisted and have very little space for the cup. I need it to “project” more.

If the centre gore doesn’t tack, you’re wearing either the wrong size or the wrong shape. It’s one of the key signs that there’s something wrong with the fit of a bra.

I was born in the 60s and remember my mother's garters, girdles and bullet bras. They were starting to use latex. Now everything has to be washed separately, and I'm told these $100 bras are supposed to be laid flat in a drawer. I'm interested in using comfortable fabric, and how to care for a cotton bra!

I haven't finished the video, but am already thinking about a theory for why we ended up with the modern bra.. Starting with the elastic material, sold as the perfect material because it is "supporting and not tight"... I think this material mostly is a benefit for the manufacturer, who can get away with the less fitted bra... Even if it looks like a fit when you try it on in the boutique, then it will definitely not fit when you have worn it awhile! It seems to me that we are led astray by the idea of underwire bra's being supportive, and the idea of a elasticated material being more comfortable... If you sew, you know that a voven fabric is sturdy and keeps its shape better.

I'm a middle age woman and last year I feel on my back and injured my shoulder. As a result it has a permanent little bump with vericose veins surrounding it. So I can now longer wear any bras. Not a good situation since I am a size d cup. This is what I do. I knit myself lacy cotton sleeveless tops and run a satin ribbon around the middle and presto! When I tie it it keeps things in place. Plus no tension on that vericose bump.

Similar struggle, I can find my size at lingerie specialty shops (30D) and I remember the ladies delighting in having me try on stuff because I was such a unique size. They always fitted me with side seamed bras that supported so much better than t shirt style, and of course made me look significantly slimmer as I have triangular breasts not rounded ones. I actually wear a lot of shapeware from American shapeware as their girdles, longlines and all-in-ones are out of this world supportive compared to modern bras that my breasts dont even properly fill.

Have you ever heard of penny rich bra. They were the best . they were professionally fitted and they came in any size you needed they were actually designed like a nursing bra so you could pull your rest out and fill the cup. They were very comfortable and flattering. I wish I could find a dealer now, but I don’t think they make them anymore.

A doctor when I was younger advised me to not use the underwire as it was for me creating a medical problem. So that resolved it has been a long standing search for an alternative that is comfy. Straps often too narrow. I find your series on bras very interesting.

I'm on the journey of sewing a 1930s girdle, so it's interesting when I watch historical sewing videos, thank you. Also, I definitely agree that old lingeries are better than the ones now, for example, the pointedness of the bullet brassiere is complementary to the shape of our bosoms and fits its shape, which makes it look more natural. Do you have any advice you can give me? Maybe something about the girdle linings?

In the late 1970s my mom was arrested with a bunch of other people at an anti nuclear power march. All of the women were taken to the local high school (the men had gone to the jail and filled it to capacity). Apparently the county was required to provide underwear to their prisoners (?) and my mom says that she and the other lady protesters had a real good laugh when they jailer came and gave them all cotton bullet bras. In the late 70s, those were hilariously out of style, I guess. They put them on and laughed hysterically at each other. But my mom also mentions that she found the bra very comfortable and sort of wished they would come back into fashion.

I've never understood how underwire "supports" the breast. It nearly always cuts in, no breast shape is universal. And breasts are heavy, how is a flat steel supporting anything? But yes please pattern away! I started looking for one as I am tired of spending £30 for a bra that isn't comfortable (but follows all the "correct fit" guidelines). I'm not even that uncommon a size at 40F

What I think based on the geometry is, that technically underwire itself doesn't support the breast. But underwire keeps the cup in shape and that's what supports the breast by preventing the breast's weight from spreading the cup out.

I've had almost the same exact issues with bras, and have been hoping for years to shift my bust support over to something I can control. I have it easier (for now) because I inexplicably lost a lot of fat years ago (I just didn't think that was possible; I thought I would always be a little on the fluffy side), so though I still have a really unusual bust size, it's not quite so difficult and I could mess with less 'heavily supportive' styles of corsets and things. I never thought I could consider those regency wrap stays, but hey, I could if I wanted to, only since I put so little thought into it, I am not near so ready to try them. I really love how you go at projects; your way of doing sewing is the most like me I've seen all my life. I've worried if I'm essentially doing things wrong because I tend to jump in the deep end of trying to recreate something much more difficult and time consuming, and am not the least bit interested in just making easy projects, because I know I might never use them or won't even like them, and I hate to waste stuff (and don't have money for that, anyway).

I can point to all my biggest making passions- corset making, shoe making, etc. and trace it back to an original unrealistic project that was beyond my skill level. BUT it got me started, and triggered a passion that wouldn't have begun if I had just done some boring beginner project. ​ @Katherine Sewing Sorry for the late response (I'll respond to the other comment about the regency corset here, too). ​ I think people I know were expressing concern that I might lose interest if it doesn't go well, but I can be pretty set on having a certain thing at some point (I'm trying to learn to relax the many plans for the future I had so that I can feel accomplished with things in the moment; like successful sourdough bread for the first time after 6+ months of the starter not getting strong enough). Because I have so many plans, a Regency (or 1830's) corset may not happen as soon as I'd like, as much as I've really wanted to see what they're like. I also want to sew my own clothes and need to start at the skin out. Figuring out a new house (and recently getting married), and organising my own life without two or three siblings and my parents to keep in mind is going to take a bit. Also- I LOVE that you are making shoes. I have always hoped to make shoes at some point because my feet are wide, my toes aren't pointed like a lot of people's get, and so they don't fit in shoes very well without screwing them up a bit, which I really don't want to do. Good posture, alignment, etc. so I can last as long as possible and will hopefully have an okay time with childrearing.

I'm old enough to have worn an all-woven cotton "training" bra at the off-set, and cotton bras for a number of years after that. What I recall about that very first bra (bras, to be precise: I believe my mother bought two for me so there was always one to wear while the other was in the laundry on laundry day) was that while the straps had adjustable slides, there was *no* elastic anywhere in that brassière and if you wished or needed to adjust the band, well, you had those three sets of eyes for the hooks to grab on the back closure. No seams cups under tee-shirts is a nice look, but...in summer heat, I prefer the relative coolness of a woven, all-natural fiber shirt, blouse, top or dress, anyway, so it's cotton or linen bras for me. By the way: it's my opinion and belief that the industry (foundation garments) is building greater obsolescence---shorter useful lives, in other words---into brassières just to increase their profit margins. They're not keeping costs down for the consumer. An article on the subject of bras in...h'mm, I'm sorry I'm not recalling the publication and I don't want to name the wrong one---anyway, this article claimed that the average American woman owns three bras, and the average price of a bra is $160! One-hundred-sixty dollars! Hard to believe. No three commercially produced bras I've ever owned (at one time) has equaled one-hundred-sixty dollars. And it's very hard for me to imagine how a lot of ladies could begin to afford that kind of money for Just. One. Bra. (Sorry: ending my wee rant, and getting down off my soap box, now.)

I love this video! I have exactly the same problem as you and am about the same bra size depending on the brand. Finding well-fitting bras is such a struggle and they are EXPENSIVE! Not to mention I'm also high-waisted so I tend to look much heavier than I am if my bra doesn't give enough support. I've been thinking about trying to sew a corset to provide more support but I'm hesitant because I'm not experienced enough at sewing to figure out how to make it fit. But maybe I'll try sewing a bullet bra!

So many people today laugh at the bullet bra for looking weird.....but it was the every day bra for decades. They were better for the breasts as they lifted and separated the breasts while modern bras only hold them in place and this causes a lot of the "fat tissue/flesh" to be pushed back under the armpits and this can lead to breast cancer. Most breast cancers are located near the armpits or on the side of the breasts. Vintage bullet bras held their shape better and were usually made of organic materials such as cotton or silk. Never wear a modern bra with underwire or made with foam padding.

Yes, garments that impede the flow of lymph through the body prevent the body’s natural cleansing and renewal process. Carcinogens stay in instead of being flushed away. I like to think of cancer as a self protective symptom that gets out of hand. When we remove the toxins and provide the right nutrition and clear out toxic emotions by resolving conflict and engaging in forgiveness, the body heals itself. It might need a little help to slow down and help destroy a tumor, but there are natural ways of doing that which are much safer and less expensive than chemotherapy And radiation.

Very informative. My youngest daughter & I have been tossing around the idea of bra making, for she & I both have ginormous tata's. I don't actually need much support, as my breasts are actually quite small - less than an A cup, to the point where I can't find bra cups that fit my ban size, as even the a 34A is much too large for me, gaps weirdly under my shirts, etc. I'd honestly go without one, but a) my nips are too pointy and b) I don't like the silhouette of going completely free. I'm also very attracted to the idea of making a bra out of woven, non-stretch fabric because I really feel like a bra made out of linen would be so much more breathable than anything with foam in it. (plus, I have always hated that "shelf life" that you talked about with elastic fabrics. I hate not being able to just throw my bras in with the rest of my clothes into the washing machine.) My understanding of why modern bras were made out of elastic was that way they could move with your body, that something made entirely of non-woven fabric would be too restrictive to move well in (like a corset). But your explanation of lacing and getting into and out of a bra totally makes sense. I wonder how easy it would be to add a little bit of lacing to a vintage-style bra to let you get in and out of it more easily without having to add elastic.

True! I do know that some bra making supply websites sell underwires of different shapes/widths. Some have a narrower curve, better for women of our shape ☺️ This shape is often called the "omega" shape.

Love your hand sewing and vintage clothing, fyi. I’m a certified tribal artist that designs and makes fiber crafts, dye protein yarns. I mainly knit & weave, don’t sew much lol don’t know why, I love embroidery and beadwork but not sewing shrug. Though been binging vintage sewing techniques and patterns to get into sewing with my machine. Also haven’t worn a bra for 15 years, arthritis in my back made it too painful to wear a bra.

I know the horrors of bra shopping for a size not found in stores. Im a 34DD where most DD starts st 38. And have been researching how to make my own bras for years. Thats how i came across your video. One of the problems i have is that i have a very short torso, eo i have to find deni cup styles or the straps will never fir or a full bra will have a huge gap the top 1/2 inch of the cup. Any videos for tips for the short torso when making patterns for bras or other alterations would be so awesome. Just a suggestion. I think the cup size translates well band to band. I've had weight fluctuations putting me as high as 38" and as low as 32" band and I stay in G/H cups.

Yes! I am a 32 band with large cups. Expecting my 5th baby. I have an umbilical hernia and need a corset or something. Bras have always been a problem.

I wear a 30D/30DD, which basically doesn't exist outside of specialty boutiques, and I also have an unusual shape, I use a wire size that is 1-2 sizes larger than the standard for my bra size. I'm trying to get into making my own bras, but I'm a little bit intimidated.

Have you ever measured a modern bra? I measured a bunch of 32s in the store today since my underbust is 31 but 32s always feel too tight even in large cup sizes. They were all 25.5" 😐

I learned that underwires are a double-edged sword - great when in place, horrible when not. Reading the comments I'm baffled by the lack of awareness about bra fitting in general, almost no one knows how to tell if it sits right, many of the "faults of a modern bra" can be attributed to incorrect fitting practices and bad standard sizing rather than the design itself. Also, one thing that might bias your vintage bra is the fact that you, a skilled seamtress, sewed it yourself to fit your body and no other. Interesting food for thought tho

I have gone through 500 bras by now. I went to a professional bra fitter. Even then, perfect for awhile then stretch. I was hurting a few days ago and discovered my underwire was poking out and stabbing me! Bras today are the cheapest, most low quality item. Mass production, poor construction. Pity, because we wear them every day.

I am not an evenly shaped woman. Commercially made bras do not work for me for that reason. Now most women have one breast a bit smaller than the other, but mine is very nearly a full cup size smaller. So aggravating. I have one more issue with bras…I have scoliosis and so I’m severely curved and twisted. Commercial bras cause me to “blow up” which in turn causes extreme pain and difficulty in breathing. So, what have I been doing? Nothing…meaning no bras whatsoever. 🤦‍♀️

Wow this explains so much about why I have had so much trouble finding a bra that fits, supports, and feels comfortable. I have dense breasts that need support but I hate underwire. It NEVER works right for me. You see I’ve had 4 open heart surgeries, 3 of them as a child, and my boobs are further apart than they should be naturally. That’s ok, I mean compared to dying as a toddler that’s not a big deal, but I wish I’d known about the concept of “breast root” sooner and not wasted so much money on bras that can’t and won’t fit because they weren’t made for me anyway. I’m not a great seamstress, but I’m crafty (knitter & cross stitcher) and I can sew a little. I’m going to try my hand at making my own bra.

Why not try adding laced panel that is never supposed to be completely undone to give it a little bit more wiggle room, when putting on such as on both of the sides. when the hook and eyes are done you could tighten it again.

This video was so informative AND inspiring AND to the point. Amazing work! I could write a book about trying to find a bra. A sportsbra is now 65L for me, european size. And add to that my tits vary in size depending on the cycle... I have two corsets and I often wonder if I could use a that lacing to keep a bra snug.. But I also have problems with shallow breathing and I wonder if a vintage that sits so tightly would allow for the ribcage to expand enough. Is that something you have encountered? It seems many stores assume the shape is a problem, or that they are too big so they need to "minimize".. for me I just want them to be still and supported while not sweaty. I really want to learn how to create my own bra and I'm going to look for this video immediatly.

Actually, the thing I hate the most about modern bras is they are either really pretty, or ugly. I like wearing lace and ribbon, having cute bows and generally being a very frilly person, and the modern bras that are like that are itchy as hell because they use cheap and nasty lace made from nylon. I actually had scars on my breast for about a year after a very pretty lavender bra with white lace irritated the skin of my breasts so badly it formed a surface scar when it healed. Its gone now, but I get the same discomfort with every pretty modern bra I try. I don't have the issue with lace made from cotton, silk or linen.

I'm sure that vintage bras can be amazing, and I'll definitely try it out, but from a perspective of someone who makes modern bras with underwires that are also much more suppportive than ready made ones I don't think you're right in judging underwire bras. Underwire does not completely determine the cup shape and most of the support is supposed to be on the band, which is exactly what underwire is for. Same point for the stretchy straps, they're not there to provide actual support, just to keep the bra snug to skin. If anyone is interested in trying making underwire bras you can look for a free maya pattern, there is also another great youtuber LizSews who made an entire series on how to sew it up. Bra making is a super interesting hobby too!

I’m a 34 DD. The bras just don’t support they stretch out the straps are too thin and everything stretches out and spills out behind the bra. And then they look bad under clothes. I hate underwires. It is a lie. Bras are made wrong these days. Vintage bras are the best.

I have rather round and far-set breasts. If I try wired bras, the wire would just sit akwardly in the middle of my chest. Also, fabric, non-stretch bras fit me differently. Instead of conforming to the shape of my chest, they force it into position. I don't find it terribly comfortartable. But it does fit. For a bra to fit, if there's an underwire, the fabric must be non-stretch. I tend to prefer bras that flatten my chest for modesty purposes, that's why I like my modern bras.

Miss Mary of Sweden and Swegmark, also Sweden, make bras in non-stretch, mostly cotton fabrics. Lots of sizes, too. Wires in bras were developed by the devil himself.

The modern bras reshape the breast so it resembles a grapefruit cut in half and stuffed in the shirt. Smooth? Yes. No wrinkles? Yes. Natural? Hell no, it looks deformed.

Hi, What are your thoughts on making a "retro/vintage" bra for a transgendered woman??? No matter what bras I have worn I can't seen to get the perfect fit & support I need for my breasts!!! My GG friend who doesn't sew says that I should stick with the basic regular modern bras despite all the issues I have with them and that just one of the daily things that I will have to deal with as a woman then she said, Do you really want to achieve your goal of total femininity daily in every area of your life i.e. be seen and accepted as a feminine mature older woman out in the public daily??? She knows that it one of the many tests that I will face and have to pass in the future in order to be considered a legitimate "World Of Womanhood" member for the rest of my life. It but one of the many ways she is helping me to understand what my goal of achieving total femininity is really all about. Anyway I hope that you will be able to give an answer to my dilemma. I think it is absolutely possible, you would just have slightly different measurements as I assume your rib cage is a little larger. I bet you could make some seriously pretty, seriously comfortable bras. A cotton or linen bra decorated with lace or linen would be gorgeous (if thats your thing, it is mine).
