The charisma of those old Homey's can't be denied. My first saw was a new XL-12 and it still cuts.

I had a sneaky feeling the crank seals in my 40 year old Stihl 024 may be leaking. Today was the first day that I have had it idling, so I decided to check it. As it idled it would occasionally increase in rpm and then drop back down, I knew it was not setup rich, which will indicate the same effects, so I got my can of break cleaner out. First, I sprayed all around the clutch and the rpm stayed the same. Then, I gave the flywheel side a shot of break cleaner and it died like a stone. This told me the flywheel side seal was leaking like a sieve and the PTO side seal was not. Iwill replace both, tomorrow, which should eliminate the problem. MyMS 260 seal seater works just as well on the 024.

@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 when I get the seal replaced, I will check the base gasket, intake boot and the back of the carb for leaks. I will also re-check the seals. I do all of this periodically on all of my saws. It picks up problems before they can develop into big problems. Would hate to smoke down a cylinder for a minor problem like a cracked boot, loose base gasket or bad seal. I really like to check behind the carb to make sure there is a good seal, there, especially if it utilizes a fiber gasket between the boot and the carb. I could use my mighty Vac to pressure test the case and cylinder, but I use it more to pressure test carbs, fuel lines, gas tanks than anything gelse. Break cleaner will catch pressure and vacuum leaks because if the saw is running at idle it will stop it in a heart beat.

The C-7 is a heavyweight for sure, with a relatively low hp. It had been some time since I last ran the saw, and I had the main jet a bit richer, but it was blubbering and smoking a bit, so I set it to where it ran best for the video.

I don't think Homelite ever made a two man saw. Some of the large displacement saws had 36 inch bars and used 1/2 inch or 9/16 inch chains. though.

That Timbermouse couldn’t be that bad that you have to use it as a hand saw. If so, something is wrong with it. Send it to Leon - he can fix it, so can call it, at least, a TimberRat.

The only problem with the Timber Mouse is that it was made. It isn't worth wasting any time or money on it. I have received many comments about the Mouse saw, and they all had the exact problems as mine, which means that it is a bad design with many flaws.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 don’t know - never saw one. Even crappy saws,like the Poulan 42-18 will cut wood. For how long is the question. They are fitted with butter bars and chains and combination plastic bearings and seals. My neighbor that lives behind me has one and it is hard for me not to tell him that he owns a piece of junk. I may give him one of my Stihls one day.

Any chainsaw will cut wood, but as you say, for how long. My Poulan Wild Thing was used when I received it, and it had actually given the original owner a lot of use. The clutch teeth were worn badly and the bar had a lot of wear on it also. On the other hand, my Wood Shark has less than 10 hours of use, and has had two major failures. These two saws are mechanically the same.

I had my 025 out yesterday cutting some real tough wood. It is definitely a homeowner grade saw, as it worked pretty hard to do the cutting, and was easy to stall the chain. These small saws are at their best, doing branching, small firewood etc., brushing and other light work, and work really well for those applications. I really don't like the .325 chain though.
@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 just remember it is only a 42.5 cc saw. It will cut with that Polan Woodshark you have. .325 is a full chisel chain with a lot of cutters for the bar lengthbut cuts smoother than a 3/8 chain of the same configuration. My .325 chains do not bog down that bad because they are Stihl RS chains and I keep them sharp. I don’t care whether a saw is a homeowner grade or a pro grade, as long as they have a fully adjustable carb and adjustable oiler. My 025 has both. It has an 18” bar on it and I think it has 74 cutters on it. If I want to cut big stuff, I got lots of 20” Pro saws that won’t stall in the cut.
@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 if one of my saws stalls in the cut they get another quarter turnout on the H jet and I will turn it out until it doesn’t stall. I want my saws to keep the same rpm throughout the cut. If I force it into the cuts via the dogs - that, I understand, but with normal pressure I want the rpm to remain basically constant.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Жыл бұрын
I used my 025 on the small end of the tree, and as the wood diameter got larger I switched to my 031, which is 48cc with a 3/8 chain. The difference in power and torque is remarkable, even though the displacement is only slightly larger in the 031, it is a much better saw for harder work. The 025 will get a muffler mod soon to improve it's performance. Today I was cutting much bigger wood in the same tree, using my 051. Even it had to struggle a little bit in this tough wood. The tree is 145 feet long, and the largest wood will be cut with my 075.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Жыл бұрын
The 025 performs much better in softer wood. It has high rpm, but not much torque, so stalls easily with the RS chain when cutting tough wood. My Poulan Wild Thing , after the mods I did to it, actually would outperform the 025, but since it is a piece of crapola, the crank failed on it. I was given 3 Wild/Shark saws for parts, and 2 of the 3 have crank failures !

There are a few things about Stihl saws that I would like to bitch about but the control lever is not one of them, e.g. certain bore to stroke ratios on certain saws, the lack of a decompression valve on certain saws, like the MS 250 and 251 and the starter pulley ratios on other saws. Stihl just does not make certain saws easy to crank for a large part of the population and are to in bed with some environmental groups and governmental agencies.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Жыл бұрын
Stihl like others have made some less than good saws. The worst ones I can remember were a pair of 034's. Very hard starting, really need a decomp valve and the control mechanisms are really cheapo. The EPA has really made saws a lot worse than they used to be.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 everything today is Woke. I’m not, nor do I expect any veteran is a member of that community. My Stihl saws are not hard starting - I just don’t have the strength that I used to have. I used to crank mid 50 cc saws without blinking an eye, but 45 cc saws beat me to death these days. My MS 260 Pro and 026 Pro are easy for me to start, but the MS 250 is almost impossible for me to pull over. Those suckers will lift my right foot off the ground and I weigh 190#. My 025 and 024 are pretty easy to start, all considering, but they are not as easy as my old Poulans. In the old days, pulling a saw over was not any consideration, but it is today. The consideration back then was - will this thing run, today? All my Stihl saws will run, but do I have enough strength to get them to run.

It is unusual how companies have made some really great saws that are easy to start, easy to service and easy to repair. Then they cheapen up the same basic saw, make them hard to start, repair etc.
@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 that true. Everybody rants how easy Husqvarna saws are to repair, but they have only worked on certain models. I do agree that most Husqvarna saws are easy to start but I have owned a few that were not. If you can drop start a saw most of them are easy to start but my left arm keeps me from drop starting a saw. If you want a hard saw to pull over, get a Husqvarna 61. If you want a hard saw to work on get a Husqvarna 350- a 455 ain’t no piece of cake, either. Tome Stihl saws are easy to work on - I guess I have seen enough of them. There are some things on a Stihl that are hard to do - Install a new boot and sometimes a fuel and impulse line but they are not impossible, just tedious.
