Ah that was lovely. Mine is half-broken, but it does amazing rhythm sounds when piezoed. One trick: find one of the measurement elements, a vibration pickup, and put it on the unit itself. That will make it feedback into itself and rattle away. Wouter can Veldhoven told me that particular nugget of fun with these.

Per Brüel worked at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden for a few years and their acoustics department has a few prototype things, in addition to the ordinary items of course. The connecting shaft between the level recorder and the other equipment (like for sweeping a tone generator) was actually a long thin spring with quadratic massive end pieces, allowing for slight disalignment. I’m sure they have all the equipment still in storage. I don’t know if there is carbon paper, but there should be plenty of ordinary paper for the 2405. There were also paper disks that turned around an axis on the right hand side of the printer used for directivity measurements synchronized with a measurement turning table where the source was placed.

I love it, how he uses a screwdriver as a pointer, is like how another youtuber, uses a trowel, as a microphone for a part of their videos. I do remember, seeing contact paper tape, for sale on either Amazon or eBay. It's called, printer tape and the company that makes it, is somewhere in Sheffield or Enfield, it's a relatively small town in the Cambridge area outside of Oxford. I'm not sure what the name of the company is or if it's still open.

Judging by the fluff distributed during usage I believe the current write head not only applies pressure, but actually scrapes a layer off of the specialized paper. Looking through an old short form catalog it appears it is white waxed coated black paper. I am not sure the stylus would be applying the right pressure to get carbon paper to work, and even if it did the appearance would be substandard. I would probably look into modifying the write head to use an ink plotter and get some normal paper specially cut into rolls which shouldn't be too much of an issue.

A chart recorder that’s easier to come by, but a little more fussy to wire for this sort of thing, is a Leeds Northrop micromax or voltmax, or speedomax recorder. The 1930’s/40’s ones have a beefy AC motor, as well as a dedicated tube amp. Because these were used in a lot of power plants and scientific applications, paper is abundant for them (though not always in the right scale). They usually used a red ink plotter pen. But they’re chunky heavy lads, and usually purpose built, so the range of voltage scales is usually fixed unless you fashion something to boost to the levels they used for that specific model.

Hello, by searching in google with the words; b&k short form catalog 1973, a pdf shows up and on page 31, it shows the exact recording paper for the type 2304. In rolls of 60 meters, white paper for ink writing and....... white waxed black paper for stylus writing QP2351 and frequency calibrated 10Hz-32 kHz QP3615 and various others i guess it is one of the waxed varieties

Never ceases to amaze me what some engineers managed to do in the era before modern semiconductors. Almost completely passive components and a few tubes *insert brain exploding here* However I'm ever so glad for the modern stuff, electromecanical can just end up as a nightmare of things wearing out that causes some of the weirdest issues imaginable along with literal rube goldberg machines of complexity (yeah, I know transistors can also be super complicated, but unless someone has really gone out of their way to make an obtuse design, it's mostly parts that can be easily replaced with modern-er alternatives).

Maybe you can use carbon/graphite paper in a special designed custom made loop. Such paper is used in a "Magna Doodle" draw toy from the 80s. Search on wikipedia for a description. A drawing can be made by pressing on the paper and the drawing can be erased by sliding a slider to 'reset' the paper. You can perform a reset at the beginning of the loop before the 'printer head' so you can use it endless like a screen. This way the machine can run an endless demonstration. Could be fun, right? And no waste of paper.
