Vintage Christmas Dining Room Makeover: Grandma’s Nostalgic Christmas Style 🎄

Decorate my dining room with me for Christmas 2023! Step back in time with me to the feeling of Christmas at Grandma's house. The tree was dripping in sentimental ornaments, the decorations were a mis-matched collection of treasured family heirlooms and a Bob Hope record was playing in the background. Join me as I recreate this old fashioned Christmas atmosphere in our 1800s victorian home's dining room. We are decorating a gorgeous @balsamhillofficial tree and adorning it with vintage-inspired ornaments, also from Balsam Hill. I'm getting out all of my thrifted Santa mug collection and proudly displaying them. We will also be dressing up the fireplace mantle for the holidays with evergreens and glass beaded garland. This is one of my favorite Christmas decorate with me videos to date! I hope you love it too!

Beautiful decor! The windows on each side of the tree, would look great with a simple green wreath, with a red bow, in each. It would frame the tree beautifully, without taking away from it!

My mom had two of those red and white gingham check tins that you used for your centerpiece- one for flour and one for sugar. I’ve kept the sugar one in my pantry for over twenty years. When you found yours earlier this year I remembered my second one in the basement and thought about using it for decor. In the end, I brought it upstairs and put my flour in it and put it in the pantry too. They both have aged pieces of white tape with my mom’s printing “Sugar” and “Flour” and remind me of her chocolate chip cookies and many other wonderful treats throughout my life.

Beautiful dining room set up and your gorgeous tree reminds me of the ones I had growing up as a child. This is the look I’m striving for this year. I’m full of all sorts of nostalgia this year. I think you’re smart to thrift for Christmas items throughout the year, I haven’t found much now and if I do, the price tag is too high. Thankfully, I have a lot from my grandparents and great-grandparents that I can use. My own parents are still using their decor….thankfully, as the large family dinner will be at their home. My mom is not ready to give that up yet, and I’m grateful she can still do it (of course, all the family chips in and helps). But the house decor, that’s all her and she makes it magical. I still feel like a child on Christmas morning in my childhood home.

Beautiful job, Elizabeth. I too have several trees that I fill my over 100 yr old home as well with different themes. This touched my heart as I have a similar aesthetic on my one tree. It has all the nostalgic ornaments my kids have made me when they were children. My mom passed away a few years ago at a blessed age of 97. I was fortunate to have all her 1950 ornaments, paper mache Santa’s and ceramics.So naturally that’s included in my decor that brings back fond memories. Loved it all I just feel sad that Thanksgiving is being pushed out more and more and I love Thanksgiving. I usually wait to decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving. I’ll still do it that way Iam in no rush and want to enjoy each holiday separately like we always did. My kids are adults and have their own homes so I don’t put up a big tree anymore . The last time I did it all I did was cry and get depressed pulling out all the memories of ornaments they loved or made and remembering how excited they would be to decorate the tree and see all their ornaments. Hopefully when they give me grandchildren I’ll put a big tree up again and bring out the old ornaments that mean so much. Have a beautiful blessed day🙏🕊❤️🌻🍄🍁🌾🍂

We’ve always had a tree up for thanksgiving, so to me it feels like the holidays. I love Thanksgiving and will celebrate it to the full. Your table reminds me of my first Christmas with my husband’s family. His grandmother Esther’s table looked much like this one. That was over 40 years ago and I am sure it was all the best things that she had. Her tree was real with Shiny Brite ornaments and I remember it had bubble lights. Sweet memories for me. *So gorgeous, nostalgic and with an old-world feel❣️ You may wish to hang a few candy canes on the greenery on your fireplace garland and tree to tie everything together with your table's centerpiece. ❤️ 🙂 The real candy canes are inexpensive, and after Christmas dinner the kids can put one in their hot cocoa while eating their dessert/pie. You may be choosing a more "open" airy look with your Christmas 🎄 Tree branches, but if not and you really want it to look loaded/"dripping" with ornaments and all of the holes filled toward the innermost parts of the tree, insert some high quality individual poinsettia flower picks into your tree. 😊 It's a very economical way to fill in the holes so you don't see bare spots in the tree's center trunk area.*

I keep a metal stake from an orchid plant in my Christmas stash to help support my antique tree topper...then use the orchid clips to attach to branches...hope this is helpful

What a magical, nostalgic, and oh-so-festive "English cottage" look. I love it Elizabeth, you did such a beautiful job!!! I have a few of Mum's vintage decorations now...they were on our Christmas tree from when we were posted to Germany in 1963! Front and center on my Christmas tree, for the last few years, is where they spend the Christmas seasons, lol. 🎄

I have done some comparisons and to purchase glass ornaments like these individually is much much more costly than what BH sells them for in their sets. Plus, they are having huge sales right now, like 50% off! Their decor to me are keepsakes and heirloom pieces that will stand the test of time 🥰

Glad you like it 😊 I left the tablecloth for the nod to Thanksgiving and was sort of going for a mis-matched English country look. That sort of ugly look, but in a charming way 😅 I approached the room like a movie set. I didn’t want everything to look perfect and designer, if that makes sense…
