Vintage Cox 020 Pee Wee

I had this engine since I was a kid, but I never flew it. It sat for over 25 years and was completely frozen and seized. Did a restoration on it and it still runs like new.
These .020's are decent running engines, just like their .049 conterparts, but less than half the size. These are good for really lightweight freeflight or control line planes.

Always love to see and hear the restorations being a success, even in April of 2024. The only bad part about Cox engines is the clocking of the cylinder exhaust port to the needle. That little guy right there is putting a standing heat plume right on the needle it looks like, which heats it up pretty good. A piece of silicone fuel line over that needle to keep it cooler and to soak up some of that pressure wave vibrations, and the runs will be smoother. Make sure the fuel line seals as best it can to the tank and needle seat. A short 4" Gilbreath Racing prop and it would scream.

you should use a 4x2 prop not a 5x3

I have one of these. Hasn't been run in 45 years but it did work at that time. Ran 'til empty so it shouldn't be too gummed up inside. It still has compression and the glow head has continuity--can't get it off though but I don't have the tool either. Don't really want to buy fuel for it just to test it. Any suggestions? I want to sell it in working order.

Well, most people that would buy a vintage one would probably buy it with the intention of doing a rebuild anyhow. There's not much that can go wrong with these. Chances are yours would need new gaskets and the reed valve as they get deteriorated over time and sometimes with those issues, fuel wouldn't flow properly... but again, the buyer would expect that most likely.

I had a nitro plane with this type of motor. It was annoying because the motor was not powerful enough to even get the plane off the ground. It would just taxi around.

how much of the fuel is actually combusted? it looks to be bathing in fuel

The fluid that you see on the outside of the engine is mostly the oil. The fuel is mixed with an oil and the fuel burns, but the oil is left behind... makes a real mess afterwards!

The methanol and nitro methane burn, the castor oil which is around 25 % of the mix doesn't, it is only for lubrication and cooling.

How does the fuel get burned I don't see any spark plug?

The little silver part on top has a small coil of nichrome wire in it, and once it gets hot, that ignites the fuel mix. That's why when he started it up he clipped that electric to it to light it off.

Glow Plug, like a diesel engine, the fuel also lubricates the parts.

It may have been a 5x3, but not sure. It was only for test runs, so I wasn't too particular as it may not be ideal.
