The earplugs to fill holes for paint is a great idea!

I recently visited a used tool stall here in UK and bought a vintage drill identical to yours with one exception - there is a large letter A cast into the frame below the top handle (mine also has the side handle still attached). I stripped it, cleaned it up, oiled it and all works great.

Excellent restoration! I'm restoring a Stanley eggbeater drill myself but has no wooden screw top to hold drill bits. Would you know of a way to remake the the top so it can screw back on? I'm clueless
@WoodByWright2 жыл бұрын
matching the threads is a pain. it can be done but it takes a TON of work and usually 15-20 tries unless you have both the right tools and experience. the most common solution is to make a plug that slides in and looks good on top. then smear the threads inside with petroleum jelly then epoxy in the plug. If done well then it will unscrew with a bit of force and now you have matching threads made with the epoxy. If not done well then you just glued the plug in place.

Hi Great Video. I have a similar drill but to date have been unable to undo the chuck. I have applied WD40 and 3 in One oil and also soaked in mild oxalic acid. Where should I go next?
@WoodByWright3 жыл бұрын
Usually my order is penetrating oil with vibration. (Not WD-40 or lubricating oil.) If that doesn't work then next up it is heating the outside and trying to break it with that. If that doesn't work then you're into destructive methods.

Do you have a restoration video for a brace? I have one that I think was my grandfather's. It works well enough that I use it as is, but the spring in the chuck is missing, and I'd love to know how to fix it.
@WoodByWright3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately with brace chucks there are hundreds of different styles. and most companies had a couple different ones that they sold. I do have one old brace video but it's not very good and doesn't have much information on it. Sorry for being a lack of information here lol feel free to send me an email and pictures and I'll be glad to help you out.

Is there a good resource to identify these older hand drills? I bought a set of 3 the other day, and just curious their age/brand.
@WoodByWright3 жыл бұрын
There's not any one good resource. Usually if I want to know about something in specific, I'll post it up on the unplugged woodworkers group on Facebook. There's usually someone there who is a collector of that particular style or brand.

What's your protocol with Linseed Oil? I'm really afraid of burning my building down.
@WoodByWrightАй бұрын
It's surprisingly difficult to make it catch on fire. It requires very specific circumstances. However, a loosely wadded up rag in the bottom of a trash can is about perfect. If you just lay them out flat until they harden they're perfectly fine to throw away then.

Belle restauration !
