I hit the jackpot today!! A family owned pharmacy in our town closed up after being in business for 75 years. I picked up ledger books, huge old pharmacy books, old prescription records, etc.

I picked up 3 vintage catalogues from an estate sale recently, ‘69, ‘70 & ‘72. It was the day my grandson was born and we took my 3 yr old grand son with us. He was so cute helping us shop. I have picked up 5 of the various cook books as well. I even picked up a binder of all hand written recipes. I have been doing the very same thing as you. It is so fun to see what you can find.

OMG...I have that 1st Betty Crocker cookbook you showed, it was given as a gift back in 1978, it was my very 1st cookbook, it’s worn, but still in great shape, those 70’s sewing patterns, the bingo games because I used to go to bingo with my mom all the time until I was 15 yr.’s old, then that one catalog with all the little embroidery pictures that said “S.S. Kresge Co. on the bottom of the front page, brought back so, so many more memories of going to the big S.S. Kresge’s store all the time with my mom & I can remember the very last time going there with her & so on! Thank you so very much for sharing this video because it brought back so, so many wonderful memories!!! Take care, 🎀 Lily 🎀

I love your estate sale tips although I didn't learn a lot because your go to places are the same as mine with a garden section thrown in. : ) We stopped at an estate sale this weekend and got such good deals, they were on the last day so they gave us wonderful bundle prices. I ended up with about two yards of pale pink lace that is eight inches wide, a found a cross stitch piece that was finished and is the most adorable yellow cottage which will be the cover of a garden journal. I got a nice table top doily which I love, a small skein, brand new, of pure aqua crochet/knit yarn, it's thin like crochet thread. I got a bag of quilting squares, some completed some just cut, I didn't really want them but I wanted them for the lady who left them behind, you know? She worked hard on them, I'm sure and I didn't want to see them trashed. I got a beautiful tea pot, a gorgeous glass bluebird of happiness and my husband got a hammer, a screwdriver and six wrenches, all old and in good shape. Like almost everything old tools were made so much better than today. As we were checking out I saw this piece of hand worked crocheted lace that has been connected into a circle, I'm not sure what it was made to trim but it's three yards of delicate lace, it was my favorite find. Anyway, we told her we were told they would bundle everything so we waited for the price. When she gave the price I almost fell over, it was all for $8.00! We ended up going back to get a nice white baker's rack that was sitting on the porch with plants on it, it is now sitting on our porch with plants on it. : ) It's nice, with a solid wood top and three shelves, wrought iron and in great shape, it was marked $28 and she let us have it for $10! I needed to share my bargains with someone and you just came along! : ) I did learn something from you, the way you store your bias tape and lace. I've tried so many ways, currently it's in a box and I don't use it as much as I should. I'm bad with books, I buy them with the intention of using them but I don't want to cut them up. I got a 1924 book called The Heart of a Dog to use for the pictures but I haven't used it yet! That's just one of many, I love books! Sorry to ramble but you know the feeling of wonder at finding such bargains so I'm sure you'll forgive me. : )

Oh Lottie, thank you for your wonderful "ramble"! My only regret is that we can't estate sale shop together! Although it sounds like your hubby is a good shopping partner. Eight dollars!?! Seriously, I can't believe what you got for $8! It's the thrill of the hunt, isn't it? I honestly got an adrenaline rush when I saw those Caswell and Massey catalogs. My challenge - like yours it sound like - is to use what I've found. I'm going with the philosophy that if I use it, more will come to fill in its place. Thanks for letting me know that we are kindred "sale" spirits! Big hugs! ❤️

Jennifer, you are right. I have been to many sales where I didn't find anything and at first I had a hard time with estate sales, I felt bad picking through someone's things that had passed or had to go to a home. We live in a retirement community so there are lots of estate sales, this was a bit different because the company helps seniors move, we signed up for their mailing list so they'll email us with future sale dates. I am very lucky with my hubby, he loves to look and he talks to about anyone. He helped the estate people carry out a gorgeous night stand to the buyer's car, it was huge, more like a dresser to me, with gorgeous carved wood($75). He's personable and always pays attention to what's going on around him, if someone needs help he's there so the sales are enjoyable for us to go to together. Do you go to sales, Jennifer?

I just bought a tote full of old cookbooks for $10 at an estate sale. But I'm about to cry because I got rid of a ton of patterns and lace before I knew about junk journaling... but you live and learn, right? In fact, I bought a Betty Crocker book almost exactly like the one you bought. I'm thinking i'm going to do mod podge napkins over the pages and making pockets and tags out of. This is a new hobby for me, and I'm already overwhelmed with all the possibilities.

Hi Gayle. Can I check, what is an estate sale? Is is a dead person's stuff? We don't have those. If you die, a relative that doesn't want your stuff pays a man to clear your house. Your stuff gets packaged up and either sold in random boxes at auctions or furniture and bigger things will get sold at a shop but the likes of doilies and papers/books aren't sold in many antique shops . I don't know if they just go to a dump. It's sad that folk live their whole life treasuring nik naks for them to have no value in the eyes of others. Things in junk journals gives the value back(as far as I'm concerned.) We treasure the old and appreciate it's age, just like if it was an old person. Our journals exist to ensure history is passed on. You can tell I'm having a depressed day, lol. Loved your stuff by the way. It's luck it found it's way to you. Now it can be shared and that person's life carries on through your work. xxxx

I have to tell you what happened! After watching this video the other day I happened to see an Estate Sale sign and I went. They had 5, gallon-sized baggies filled with various cards and envelopes. They were marked $2.00 each, then we negotiated a 2 for 1 deal, then as I realized I didn't have any cash on me and couldn't find my debit card, the lady in charge told me to take them, I could just have them! She said it was my blessing for the day. Thanks for your video. Such great ideas to look for at estate sales.

Thank you so much for sharing all of your lovely "finds!" I was able to go to a sale at our Community Club this weekend. They call it the Second Time Around Sale, but truly a lot of those items have hopped from one garage sale to another on our little island before they land at this sale! I bought a gorgeous lace table cloth to cut up for journals, but then saw that it would fit our large dining table. I did NOT want another tablecloth, but felt guilty cutting it up. Then I found some holes in it and some stains, so I started cutting it up and it has now all been tea-stained. I also found a pair of lace pillow shams that had one kind of lace across the front of the shams and another kind trimming them all the way around. When I cut them up I discovered they had another usable fabric as a lining. I found the most gorgeous little bird book.... vintage from 1956. All of the illustrations are beautifully colored drawings. I may have a hard time cutting into this one! But I know the drawings will also be lovely in my journals. As for "usefulness" as a bird book, we have a current one with photos, and all of the birds are native to the area in which we live. So that may make cutting into my vintage one a little easier. There was also a vintage deck of cards that would not be very useful as actual playing cards because there are 52 different images of flowers on them. It wouldn't take too long to memorize which flower is which card, so I think they will be just delightful in my journals! In the craft section I got some bobbins for my DMC floss, although I turned down all of the boxes of floss. As much as I'd like to complete my collection with the latest colors, the truth is that it's been months since I did any stitching and I don't think I'd use it. I did pick up a few patterns that I may or may not use, but I knew the fellow that owned them (he passed away recently) and just wanted something from his collection. In addition to the "crafty" finds for my journals, hubby found a large sign for "The Crab Shack" complete with a large 3D crab on it! Since we do a fair bit of crabbing on the island, and share crab with just about everyone we know, it seemed like it just belonged here. We ended up paying $22 for all of our finds, though we could have paid less. It is a fund-raiser and a name-your-own-price sale. The next one coming up will be all books! I can hardly wait.

I feel SO FRUSTRATED.AND DUMB that i cant DO this. Wish i knew someone in real life that did this
@gayleagostinelli_ct6 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane! Oh hon, you're not dumb at all! We all have had our mental blocks in starting to do junk journals. Taking apart a book is a very common one. And you DO know someone in real life that does this...me!...you can ask me anything and I'll help all I can. If you haven't watched my series called Anatomy of a Vintage Book Junk Journal (something like that), I did 7 or 8 videos of making a journal start to finish out of an old book. I would recommend you grab an old, damaged book (one that wouldn't bother you to take apart) and follow along that series and see if you don't end up with a great little journal! If you have any questions, I'm here for you! If it helps at all, I look at it like this....the items I get from thrift stores or estate sales are one step away from the garbage. So we are giving books and items new life by creating something beautiful from them. Believe in yourself, my friend, you can do this! Hugs! ❤️

I don't mind seeing damaged books and magazines being recycled and reused but I hate seeing items that care in perfect condition being cut up and destroyed just because they are old. Some of the vintage magazines etc are becoming rare. We need to value our heritage and history. There are many museums grateful for donations of these old magazines and games if they are in perfect condition. It is easy to copy the images or there are a multitude of sites with free images of this type. A bit of coffee, tea or ink staining and you have the look of the real thing. I we need to keep in mind that we may value our junk journals but once we are gone they are probably just going to be a whole lot of junk to those cleaning out our stuff.
@gayleagostinelli_ct6 жыл бұрын
Karen Johnson I agree! That's why I try to find items that are one step away from the garbage to use. Have you ever looked in the back room of a thrift store? There are piles to the ceiling of books etc. and if you dare look at their dumpsters, it would make you cry! So, all that to say, I think it's like anything else, there's a balance. Thanks for your comment. I.completely feel what you're saying. Have a great crafty day! ❤️

As the curator of a small, rather esoteric library on a major university campus, I can tell you, they probably don't want your old books and magazines. Every year we get donations from retired people in our field; usually boxes of books and memorabilia they've collected over their careers and almost all of it gets donated to Goodwill. This article, by a museum curator, is short and very informative; the comments are worth reading, too. Unless a book is rare (a google search will usually give good results), then sadly, it's not worth anything. Libraries and museums only have so much space to keep things and stuff that no one's going to look at is taking up valuable space. Just add "https" at the beginning of this and take the spaces out. YT doesn't allow posting of links. :// unclutterer. com/2013/07/08/ does-your-clutter-belong-in-a-museum/
