Thank you for sharing Gary! I just recently found and overhauled powell #2186 from nov 1961. I love it! That haynes sounds great by the way!

Have you ever seen or played a Tip Lamberson Flute? I think he only made 720 handmade flutes. I played in a Municipal Band with him, but that was many years ago.

I had a Lamberson #70. Unfortunately a sibling stole it for drug money in 2014 and I have never found a trace of it. The person that took said it was pawned for $100. I went to the pawn shop and of course got no cooperation even with my police report. I still miss that flute. I have a Haynes now.

I have a solid Silver Haynes flute purchased in 1956. I have purchased 3 different head joints for it. I now have a silver head joint with rose gold fused inner lining and a William Bennett embouchure hole.

I really like the sound of the Haynes and would like to hear how my Haynes wooden flute would compare in that mix,

it seems that haynes flutes pre-400xx serial number were all coin silver(900)

Aburaage Kojima they made some in sterling as well. The difference between coin and sterling is interesting.

@@garyschock hi thank your reply , i want to buy one vintage haynes (60s) but i never seen one, is there any detail can help identify coin or sterling ? and can you tell some more details about difference between coin and sterling ? thanks ;)
@garyschock5 жыл бұрын
Aburaage Kojima the sterling ones have a sterling mark on the bottom of the thumb key and on the foot joint. They are more rare, and in my opinion the nickel silver ones are richer sounding. But maybe I am prejudiced toward them. Email me on my website if you are looking, I always find them.

What type of pads do you advice being used on an older handmade silver Haynes flute made in the 1950's?
@garyschock7 жыл бұрын
Sharon Gygi felt traditional pads
@sharongygi16017 жыл бұрын
garyschock, thank you so much. This is the 4th time I have had my ( model 27260) Flute overhauled, but the Repair person insisted on putting in the newer pads used for professional flutes. Needless to say the response is nothing like what I have been used to, so it’s going back to have the old type pads put back on it. It has been a terrible disappointment in that my intermediate level Pearl flute plays better. I realize now after talking to Allen Weiss that they put different pads on the older Haynes flutes.

Such beautiful full tone... yes, maybe less color options.... but so consistent in full bodied tone. Powells just rock no matter what the decade. :) Oh but that Haynes.... WOW! We know though that the developer of the Haynes flute left and went to Powell in the 70's so we know why both have such wonderful tones no matter what.

They're both beautiful. I'm primarily a sax player, so what comes to mind - transposed into Saxophone language - is that the sound of the Powell is more spread than the Haynes. I've always preferred the Powell sound. When in the hands of someone like you, the Powell has an almost haunting/ other worldly quality to the sound/presence... Different subject: In one of your videos, you said that you preferred the old scaled to new scale flutes. Can you elaborate as to why? Is it coincidental that the more vintage flutes that you like are old scale, or is it the scale itself that you like better?
