A more common use of gold is also adding a gold riser or embouchure to a silver instrument. I agree with you that the different materials affect the sound, even when the instrument specs are the same. I have tried a silver, 14k, 10k, and 15/85 with gold embouchure Brannens with soldered tone holes and their were noticeable differences. I do think that the differences are much more apparent to the player than to the listener, but the player’s perception really does affect his/her performance. Looking forward to your in depth reviews of these flutes. 🙂

Excellent explanation! I agree that the biggest difference is to the performer. Absolutely it can affect the way we use our air and make music with the instrument! 100%

I think the Burkart sounded good with you. All of them are great makers. I wish one day I could also try all of them 😄 (there‘s a lot more to go for me, I am just learning since an year) anyway as a non-native english speaker I find that your way of speaking is really comfortable to hear. I appreciate this and that‘s why I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks!🙌

That's great to hear! Thanks so much! Yes, I really enjoy playing on @BurkartFlutes these days. 🤔 Hopefully you can find a flute fair or convention near you and try all the flutes sometime soon! Happy practicing!

I have gold springs on my flute, but the rest is silver with silver plated keys. I am no professional and am pleased with my Gemeinhardt Brio.

Great! Gold springs are a great feature to have on your flute. They are proven to provide a key action that is both light and responsive.

Lance, what's your take on white gold vs. 14k gold? I keep hearing white gold is a very rare so what is the breakdown between white gold, rose gold vs. high karat gold?
@LanceSuzuki9 ай бұрын
Excellent question. Most gold flutes are alloys. The karat describes the percentage of gold. Higher karat means higher percentage gold. The other stuff in the alloy can vary. Common metals are silver and copper. A 14K flute is going to have the same amount of gold regardless of color. If it is rose gold, you know there’s more copper in the mix. Yellow gold will be probably be more silver. White gold, from my understanding, can use silver, palladium and nickel. I agree that white gold flutes are pretty rare. My flute is rose gold but I might be inclined to try yellow gold in the future. Thanks for watching!

You left out the mechanism in gold and silver. Gold is supreme and will add noticeable weight. The best used is 14k as it is strong, stable and low wear. It is a hard alloy in that it is only 53% gold. Silver is softer and although less expensive it wears faster if used a lot. Sterling is 925/999 parts silver making it a rather soft metal. Also, remember that we should be paying attention to the response and resonance of the flute that is affected by the alloy. A good player can sound good on all of these nice flutes but the response is most important to help the player shape the phrases and play musically. Articulation can be very different on these flutes. Your test would actually be even more accurate if you had all the same brand of flutes. Manufacturers can be rather different in response and manufacturing techniques. Thanks for sharing this demo.

I would be curious to know if a gold riser by itself in a silver instrument makes an appreciable difference.
@LanceSuzuki Жыл бұрын
Great question! IMO, it can make a big difference. The riser is the first place the air touches. Often it is a more affordable upgrade that can really change the response of the flute.

Next important criterias : price & ease of playing ! So, how much are these ? Do-I dare ask...😂
