Same here, my mum started getting me a Giles annual every year back in 1979. She also had loads dating back to when she was a teenager, so I literally spent hundreds of hours devouring the man's art and must admit, still do. Got emotional seeing some of the covers as most of my old ones lost theirs years ago. Nice vid.

A very interesting video, Jules! Surprisingly, I'm not familiar with Giles. The only time I had heard of him previously was in an episode of Willy and Floyd. Jim Unger was the guest (the creator of "Herman") and his early editorial cartoons were compared to Giles.

Notice how till the forth edition they where all published by Lane but the reprints where all published by the Express including No's 1,2,3, that's how to tell an original from a reprint that's being touted as a true number one. Probably why the bottom fell out of the price?

Maybe that's the case Roger. I don't feel as many people are collecting them like they used too. It maybe most people have finished their sets?

Well I think that if you produce anything that has a sequential number in quantity someone will search for the number 1 then look to acquire the remaining iterations. If you don't believe me see who collects Pan books by number? Hey! ; ) Or Beatles records, kinder egg toys, mac donalds kids meal toys, dare I say stamps? I mean, how much for a penny black? I think you're right about Giles though however, the more expensive they got then the less collectors would persevere and just go for the reprint.

True. Trying to get a sense of the current market is pretty easy by checking completed sales on eBay. Would be interesting to see what the Giles books have been making.

Yes I'll do that I've got a good set of early 50's/60's Giles and I think it may be time to reassess their value, I won't sell them though. I'll just see... then return to this thread later.
