Vintage Hot Rod Straight 6 - Painting Candy Colors
Everybody knows that the engine is a central key component to ANY Hot Rod project. But is a V8 the only way to go? NO WAY! Stacey takes a vintage straight six engine that has been sleeping in a crate for almost 40 years and he puts on the right pieces. He shows you why the straight six was a force to be reckoned with in the early days of hot rodding. After that, Stacey jumps into the tips and tricks of how to paint your own true Kandy paint job. If you are into vintage Hot Rods, Kandy paint, and multi-carbs… you don’t need to go on a diet… you just need to watch GearZ!

12Bolt Tom has dual/split headers for this application. I bought a set for my 65 wagon with its original 230 inline 6, along with an Offenhauser 4brl intake to put a Holley 390 carb. I love the hopped-up inline 6's, I also like the new paint job on this motor, may have to repaint mine when I have it out.

Most badass 6-cylinder engine that I ever saw was Bruce Sizemore's Ford Maverick that had a Ford 240 engine bored and stoked to 300 CID and had 3 Ford 351c cylinder heads cut and welded into oner cylinder head. The car held the NHRA H/MP record for several years. I raced him once with my E/MP '57 Ford and I won, but not by much.

That's not 292. The passenger side motor mount is in the middle of the block, the fuel pump is towards the front, and the lifter galley covers are 4 inches high vs 6 inches for the 292.

Loved this episode when it first came out, been watching since I was a kid. I got a lot of inspiration from this show. I can tell now that that's a 194, 230, or 250, based on the height of the side covers and the location of the motor mount boss and fuel pump. I have a few of em 😎

I love the old straight 6 Chevys, and I have one in a boat. But the 350 and LS platforms have so much aftermarket parts available they are easy to put in anything. I mean, I'm capable of making anything fit into anything, but I also have tons of tools and welders.

You had some great ideas in this episode by suggesting doing a couple of mods slightly outside of the h box. The 6 cylinder hot rod engine upgrade is an interesting twist for a hot rod. My neighbor has four (nice) hot rods and they all have a 350 in them! Lmao 😅for hot rodders that seems to be the only motor created. They put it in everything! So I think this pepped up six is a nice change! The segment on candy paint was also interesting. I started doing a resto on a 73 Dodge van in 2021 and decided it was my opportunity to try some custom painting. I went to KZbin and watched all the custom painting videos on candy and custom graphics I could find. I had already shot a few paint jobs through the years, so I wasn’t a stranger to basic body and paintwork. I’ve been having a blast doing the custom paint work on my van. Put four cool murals on it so far, plus numerous custom panels with various patterns and small flames. I’m pleased with the efforts so far. Now I want to flake and custom paint everything I do in the future. I shot a quart of the Duplicolor pre-mixed candy paint on the inside of the van in a few spots. If you are doing an entire car, I wouldn’t go with that because it’s lacquer and that type of paint doesn’t last like enamels. I’m using Eastwood’s single stage paints and candy paints and European clear. You can use their paint products with other compatible brands of paint and you won’t have an issue. Just don’t mix lacquer and enamels is my recommendation. Look forward to more of your shows.

Working on an AMC 304 for my 76 CJ5 that's been sitting for who knows how long. I found that sometimes sitting and never hurts to pop that intake and check out those hydraulic lifters, make sure they're still functioning , mine were stuck as a result I now have some bent push rods but it's going to take more than just push rods to fix that problem so we're updating and getting a whole Cam and lifter kit put in it, as well as another set of push rods of course. So just because it ran when pulled, depending on how long it sat might mean that you need to check it out! Definitely explains why mine sounded like it wanted to run but didn't... So beware of the obvious guys it'll get you every time.

Just stumbled on this video. Thanks for posting the build on the six cyl. I have a low S/N '67 Camaro with a 250CID and have been contemplating a LS or 383 Swap like everybody does. I'm not racing the car, just want a bit more drivability out of it, so building the existing motor might be just what's needed! I need to add power steering and A/C, so a bit more HP/TQ would be perfect. I also found a place called Clifford Performance, their motto is 6=8, they have some great parts for building performance into our 6 bangers. I applaud you for inspiring me to do this, I'm going to have the block and head refurbished, add a performance cam, water cooled aluminum intake manifold, small Holley 4bbl, split manifold headers & dual exhaust, and a HEI Ignition (might splurge for their performance head?). It's a "Pace Setter" Edition, so it has a 3sp on the floor and Bumble Bee stripe across the front from the factory, so doing this build vs. the other will help it maintain some of it's originality (I'll keep all the original pieces) while adding a bit of pep. I'll probably upgrade the drum brakes to disc and also the factory suspension while I'm at it. You've really inspired me, thanks again!!

With a little bit of looking, one should be able to find a set of the (I guess out of production) Clifford research headers. I used to have a '66 C10 with a 292 running an Offy intake with a 400cfm Holley and Clifford headers, giving dual exhaust. This set up gave me an extra 4 mpg and a whole lot of a performance kick.

Built a 330 CID inline 6 for my 1965 Chevy G10 Van. Cost me $7k to produce 300 HP. Then I bought a used Mercruiser 383 magnum for $3k and cut up my doghouse to fit it. Really notice the difference now that I have 500 HP in my 1998 pound GVW van.

ok, gotta admit, i'd hate to take that crate apart either--so many high mile inliners sitting around, this would make good garage wall art to hold up a workbench. But, re-purp'ing that wood into hot rod floorboards? an old trick from Henry Ford himself....

I wonder if Stacy ever realized, after the fact, that this was a 250 instead? How can you tell? The pushrod cover for a 292 are about an 1-1/2" taller, and there is a lot of space between the water pump and cylinder head, when a 250 has the water pump just under the cylinder head. Good episode though, I've always liked those Chev straight sixes!
