Like watching what your doing; but you could turn the jams down a bit, especially when you're talkin'.

I would definitely derust every single tiny component. evapo rust, naval jelly, whatever it takes, to make the metal look brand new, the pride will follow.

I think you might have a lathe made by the FE Reed Company in Worcester Mass. I have a bigger one and it is dated circa 1884, 1896. Thank you for posting the video. Enjoyed it..

Looks like a great project you are to be commended for your effort. Just one suggestion, where ever possible use open ended or box end wrenches. Those knuckle buster crescents reduce the amount of torque that you can apply and dont round the flats. Good Luck and I will follow you with interest.

Can't hear the voice and the music is way too loud. Would have loved to watch this rebuild. Oh well.

Interesting restoration. Too bad about the loud heavy metal music! I thought I was at a rock concert! Couldn't hear a word you were saying!

Obviously you dont KZbin much. At least its real rock music, every other video like that has that garbage EDM/Rap stuff, oh and if it's too loud, YOU"RE TOO OLD!!!!!!

Suggestion to everyone. When confronted by a pile of machine shaped rust, place the pile on an open area like atop a 55 gallon drum outside, grab a quart or two of cheap motor oil and your propane torch and have at it. Heat and creep the oil into EVERYTHING. Take an hour or two or three. You can even use old-used motor oil. Let the hot oil carry away the iron oxides, (abrasive to the max) before attempting to take anything apart.

looks to be a FE Reed lathe from pre 1900, I have one that looks almost identical

I like the music and love the Old Iron. Enjoy your time with the rebuild. It can be a great experience for you and many others that view it. Sorry you are getting negative comments . I would suggest if you have other tools that are not adjustable or could cause damage to the machine to use them . The little Lady deserves plenty of TLC such as soft face hammers or brass or aluminum punches etc. The critics need to learn how to use constructive criticism rather than rude remarks.. Effective communication should never wound the person you are trying to communicate with. Keep up the good work. I have subscribed and used the notify option so I can follow your progress.

Hey bud, nice video, it was interesting and fun to watch, not knowing anything about restoration I didn't notice any tools like some of the nasty comments, the editing was good and kept me watching until the end, keep it up!

Diehl Does I agree totally with the original commenter. I can never understand why some people have to be so super critical. It says more about them than it does about the the content you created. I was entertained and I haven't even moved on to part 2!! As of the time I watched this video it has nearly 190,000 views, so you're doing something right!! Keep up the good work! 👍👍

do's and don'ts turning first chips. 1. Turn the head 1/2 the speed you think you need at first. 2. Make damn sure, the point of the cutter, is in the center height of the tailstock point. Not higher, not lower. 3. Make your tool post holder ten times as strong as you think you need it to be, or chatter will ruin the finish. Use eye protection. Look everything over around you, and don't cut, or start, until everything is moved from underfoot, and around the lathe head, especially the chuck handle. Never ever use a file without a wooden handle to clean and debur the part. etc. etc. etc. It is waiting to get you if you screw up. But people around you will begin to rely on you to help them when they need your skill.

Just a passing thought, with an electrolysis tub that big, why didn't you de rust it whole?
@DiehlDoes7 жыл бұрын
couple reasons, I think some spots would not have gotten de rested very well, it would have taken a lot longer, and the main reason is because as a whole piece it is very very heavy. also the bearings for the headstock would not have survived through the electrolysis as they are like engine bearings, a mixture of lead tin and copper which would have deteriorated in the electrolysis.

What a killer video. Bah humbug to the wet nellys. Would rather listen to you tunes than a blow by blow description of how to use a wrench.
