Vintage M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk Lego Tyres / Tires - Toy Polloi

This is the second part of my Kenner M.A.S.K. Thunderhawk restoration. There are a couple of bits that are always missing from the Thunderhawk, the wing tips get lost and the tires (tyres for us in the UK) degrade and fall off. So that's what I am going to be sorting out today.

curved nail scissors work really well for trimming the insides of tires , lego again to the rescue . i learned several years ago that some of the tires going waaay back will fit some hot wheels !

While I do love your original work and felt the smooth tires reminded me of those used in stock car racing, the new LEGO tires work better as a replacement for the originals with the tread on them and the modifications were very limited. Thanks for the update, Dave!👍

would be cool if someone out there 3d printed a hub that has the design of the thunderhawk wheel but also has the grooves to fit the lego tires which are readily available

these lego ones do the job and is a quick and easy way to do it, that being said i think i prefer your previous ones, i like the smooth shine you see from the side view

Neither are perfect, but it's nice to have some options.

For your ali-express tires, have you thought about making a jig where you can mount them to a power drill (wooden circle of the right size with a long-ish bolt through it) and then using the drill to grind the tires against some sandpaper to more cleanly remove the tread?

reverse the tyre slide on t a ratchet socket attached to a drill & sand

A rotary tool and sanding bit might do a job of thinning down the inside bit.

watching you try to trim those tyres , i was saying to myself why doesn't he turn them in side out ??!?!?!!? then in the next breathe Dave says he's found an easier way , i was like yup inside out. XD

It truly amazes me how versatile Lego parts are. So many fixes. It blows my mind. Who would have ever thought all those years ago Lego would be this useful. I think Lego should sponsor your channel Dave. As much attention as you bring to their products. Regardless of how you use them. It still gets the word out for their products. At minimum they should give you a huge box of spare parts , antennas, the pieces you use for installing heads, axle rods. All that. Just saying. Thanks again for the videos Dave.

once turned inside out would the tyre fit over a drill chuck? you could then spin them up over hand held sandpaper and remove the lip and thin them at the same time

Thank you my friend Dave. Another great video on fixing and improving the quality of vintage toys. After seeing this video I am trying to look for good rubber tires to put on my MASK Jackhammer. When I purchased it, the wheels were broken and I glued them at the parts that were split. Not a perfect fix but it's what I could do at the time. Any advice where I can get the tires for it? Could the inside of the tires (the unseen bits) be trimmed somehow to reduce the rubbing?

I feel it would be quite hard to do neatly. But worth a try if you have some spare tyres.

I cannot comprehend why an RC company (like Click -n- Play do... making vehicles, bases and accessories compatible with 80's G.I Joe & Action Force) or a custom toy/repair parts store have not made replacement tires for MASK vehicles.
