Trying to explain to people over the years that there were 3 Voltrons has been entertaining. I was super into Voltron when I was a kid and one of the local hobby/5&dime stores had all three of them for sale. I only got lion Voltron, myself, back then, but I thought all three of them were cool in their own right. (On the Matchbox packaging for all the full sets, Golion was Voltron III, while Dairugger Fleet XV was Voltron I and you can see here that Albegas was II. That confused the hell out of me then.) When I learned more about the different series and all that when I got older, I kinda regretted not getting all of them.

If you really want to blow their minds show them a picture of Daltanious, and explain that was originally Voltron. Voltron 0 if you will.

I remember seeing these in the stores when I was a kid. There were stacked together with the vehicle and lions. I was really confused when I read: Voltron I(vehicles), Voltron II(robots) and Voltron III (lions), thinking wouldn't the lions be Voltron I and vehicles be Voltron II.

In my hometown when I was growing up we had a K-mart and an Ames. The "Voltron shelf" in the toy aisle would consist of about half of the Voltron II boxes opened and the contents played with/scattered all over the shelf like some kind of ghetto daycare, and the Voltron I and Voltron III products would ALWAYS be sold out. I recall fiddling with some of those Voltron II figures that were opened and could never figure out how to reconfigure/transform them like shown on the box. Thanks for sharing! Kind of a deep dive, but reminds me of a super robot from the 70's, Getter Ryger, which was released under the Shogun Warriors franchise here in the USA as "Raider". There was a model kit from Monogram, and some die-cast figures with awesome chrome shoot-your-eye-out choking-hazard fists and missiles under Mattel. It too consisted of three smaller robots that "stacked" like Albegas and each of the six possible configurations had different powers/strengths.

@@songsan807 I had a couple of friends, a pair of sisters just a little younger than me, whose mom actually did this in the 80s - they thought He-Man was the best toy line so the mom bought dupes for playing and for storing away. I still have mine in a cedar chest. I hope they're still completely intact. I remember seeing them at Toys R Is. I watched the cartoon and knew vehicle and lion forces but had no idea what these were. But the package said Voltron! And on the back it showed the other Voltrons so they belonged with them. These were also the first Votron toys I had ever seen in a store. I had to get them! I showed them to my friends and because of the box we all accepted it was Voltron even if we never saw it in the cartoon. We never saw the Deluxe Insecticons in Transformers but they were still Transformers. Sometimes when we were outside playing my one friend would shout "Form Votron Two!" And he'd hop on my back and we'd go around with me carrying him and him swatting the other kids on their heads.

Back/Heel legs might need to go toe forward if we are going of box art unless the peg slot interferes. But that may also explain why Alpha is the only one that had the legs CORRECT in stand-alone form. Both Beta and Gamma were still aligned for combined mode. I remember seeing this Matchbox toy at my local Toys R Us during my elementary school days. Confused the hell out of me but not because there was a Voltron 2. I knew there was supposed to be a Voltron 2 but I didn’t expect this robot released by Matchbox to be Voltron 2. I knew the lions were Voltron 3 and the vehicles were Voltron 1, but the Voltron 2 I was expecting was a robot called Daltanius or Daltron. Why? Because about a month before Voltron 3 aired on my local channel, there were commercials for an upcoming robot show for kids that listed each Voltron. Dairugger was 1. GoLion was 3 and Daltanius was 2. Imagine our surprise when V3 was aired first, then V1 aired, and then Voltron 2 never aired. He was always the mysterious and forgotten Voltron. And the Voltron who had an identity problem because he was either Albegas or Daltanius. I’m not sure if that commercial can be found on KZbin. Over the years I had wondered if I was just remembering it wrong but my older brother confirmed he saw Daltanius listed as Voltron 2 in that commercial. I also remember this one kid in my elementary school actually bringing a Daltanius robot to school.and calling it Voltron 2 which means he must have seen the same commercial I did. He most probably got it at my local flea market at the time which was a hotbed for authentic and bootleg Japanese toys.
