My favorite Christmas toy of 1960. I was 3, and my father insisted on taking it apart to show my how, and it took him 6 hours to put it back together. I cried all day!

That TV commercial certainly was very effective! I watched it many times back in the day, and a few minutes ago I was walking down the hallway and happened to be swinging my arms, and a tune came into my head . . . and then the words . . . "Here he comes, here he comes . . ." and then I came straight here and found this video. Howdy to all of you who embraced, with either fulfillment or frustration, Mr. Machine!

I got one when I was 4 or 5 (around 1960). My dad noticed that I had a fascination with mechanical things, so for Christmas he gave me one. My older brother insisted we take it apart. I said no, but he did anyway and a gear got lost and it never worked again. Dad was going to get me another, but they had stopped production. And since then he always called me mr machine. I purchased and still have an original '60s Mr. Machine that is in very good shape (no box), however even though I am a 'gearhead', I won't take it apart.

OMG! I got one of these for Christmas when I was about 4. One night when I was in bed, the bit of winding that was still left kicked ol Mr. Machine into gear. When his mouth opens like that he made this creepy growling sound. I FLIPPED OUT!!! Mr. Machine spent the next 12 years buried in the garage attic. I came across it when I was about 16.

I had one of these and loved it. I could take him apart and put him back together. I was 8 or 9 years old. I also had a Tic Tock Clock. Same idea. A big face clock that had all the big plastic gears you could take apart and put back together. Don't think it kept time but the arms would move around like a clock and you could see all the colorful gears move. Toys like these and Erector Sets helped me develop my mechanical skills being able to take things apart and putting them back together. After all, isn't that the skill you need to fix things? They just don't make educational toys like this anymore. Every toy today needs a screen and keyboard.

You bring up an interesting scenario about the dark side of Mister Machine. There is something just a little bit creepy about this toy. He'd be a terrible thing for an acid head to encounter on a bad trip. Middle-of-the-night crazy screaming and then a desperate attempt to escape at any cost. "You can run but you can't hide!"
