Dear Bernina Jeff, Thank you so much for this video. Much more in depth info about oiling my beloved Bernina than was in the manual (now missing that page) or marked with red inside my machine. She is my daily driver, and I have owned her since my parents and grandparents gave her to me for a combined birthday and Christmas when I was about 15 years old...50 years ago. She and I have many miles, many garments, many curtains, pillows, cushion covers and tablecloths between us, and now she's my partner in quilting. I think of my dear Nana and the creative spirit she nurtured in me every time I sit down to sew. I love her so much that when I wanted an "inexpensive" machine for my cabin, I bought one used and had it repaired. I want to keep them in good shape for years to come...one for each granddaughter!

Jeff I have a far better way to fix the stiff buttonhole mechanism. They sell plastic safe Deep Creep penetrating oil made by Sea Foam. I squirted a real quick shot of it using the tube right at the back of the buttonhole switch let it sit repeat one more very small squirt then I used some synthetic sewing machine oil down on any metal on metal linkage coming from the buttonhole mechanism then used a little heat from hair dryer and it works beautiful turns easy. My machine was bought and just sat never was oiled until I bought it. I oiled like your video and it runs so smooth I can't believe it. I was told the lady purchased and never learnt how to sew. I am now the happy owner of a 1979 Bernina 830 record electronic. I have used Deep Creep to free up several seized up vintage sewing machines .Don't use shellac thinner use Deep Creep. I did appreiciate the video.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I got a Bernina 830 record from my grandma who passed away and it is my greatest treasure. It's so awesome that these machines are so old and are still working, I also love that I can just fix these kind of things myself because of awesome humans like you that share their knowledge! My button hole switch wouldn't budge and I used the hair dryer and oil trick, now it works! I love how long lasting these machines were made, no sensitive electronics just plain old mechanics that do their job ✌✌👍👍 I'll now mark the spot that needs to be oiled on my machine 😊😊😊😊

I have one! Purchased used in 1982. Sadly I dropped it so the only plastic on the whole machine broke and my dealer says it cannot be replaced. Now it's duct taped The straight and Zigzag stitches are beautiful but the decorative stitches aren't working but you may have shed some light on a fix...I put it away and replaced it with a 590. I just pulled it out again and it works after sitting for 4 years! Put oil where I thought it should go, but missed a bunch. My manual only said to oil the bobbin case. Hmmm. I will be doing all the things you suggested. Thank you so much for this, and ALL your videos...BTW, my dealer finally started carrying some of the things you sell online😂like the custom knob covers and feet holders. I'm still going to order from you.

Thank you so much Jeff! I inherited my mom's 830, and really love sewing with it. You explained so well, and I love the nail polish/paint (just did mine like yours)! Again, thanks so much for your straightforward, simple explanations!

I have a machine like the one on the left that my mother bought for me in 1978. I used it and used it! In 2018 I bought a new Bernina 570 series, but I kept the old one because my mother told me to never get rid of it. I still use it for all of my mending and some other sewing. I also do some stitching on paper with it. I didn’t know I could oil it myself! Our Bernina dealer here in Casper, Wyoming closed last year 😢. Guess I need to find a new dealer to get my 570 serviced.

Wonderful video! This was so helpful and interesting to see what the inside looked like, and ease of access. I really enjoyed it. Could you please make a video showing the differences between an 830 and 930 record? The 930 seems to be the penultimate sewing machine, however, the 830 seems to have easier access to the internals, a nicer red case, and a simpler build, ergo a simpler maintenance. In the end, its always about maintenance of things.

My Bernina 830 Record was also my Mother's - and I treasure it as much as you treasure yours! She used a yellow paint pen to show me where to oil the machine that she spent so much of her time sitting at... It is lovingly housed in a Horn Sewing Cabinet, making it very simple to work at and keep it tidy as well as dust-free when not in use. I'm not a great sewer, but occasionally I will make a unique frock for myself. I have just bought a new house and am making my own curtains and saving a bundle on buying made-to-order ones. I really appreciate your video which helps me keep it in pristine condition - but I would sell my body (not that anyone would buy it, LOL!) before I sold my Mother's sewing machine! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and obvious passion for these lovely machines. 😁

Hi Bernina Jeff, I bought my Bernina in 1976. Recently, it started making some unusual sounds. I felt the motor was dying and I thought maybe it needed a new belt. I took it to two different people to be serviced, one of them a certified Bernina repairperson. They serviced it and told me there was nothing was wrong with it. OK. I didn't believe them. Having said that I started a search for a new old Bernina 830 Record. Yesterday I purchased one locally. I wish I had seen this video first. Before I purchased it I sewed on it and noticed that there were tight knobs and the decorative stitch feature didn't work. It has a good straight stitch and zigzag was fine and other features seemed to be working fine. Today, a friend and I were able to "unfreeze" the decorative stitch feature by adding oil. Afterwards I found this video. I have now oiled the new old Bernina and hopefully it will sew like a dream. I LOVE my Bernina and hopefully I can revive the original one too. Thanks for your video. It was a God send.

My daughter gave me an 830 which I love. I followed you on how to clean and oil the machine and removed the cover over the bobbiin area. When I put it back, it won't stay closed. I thought I had pushed the button that latches it back on. Once I close it, when I start to sew, it pops up a little and the door opened enough to not hold the bobbin etc in. II followed your video and I learned about how to take care of my machine. A big thank you from Louisiana.

I absolutely love my 807 and 830 both still stitch beautifully and are so reliable I will never part with them as they are fully serviceable and will out live me. They hold their prices because they are great sturdy machines. Unlike the new computerised and plastic part machines. Please Bernina see sense and start making and selling these machines again.

Hi Connie, did you get this sorted? Sewing without the light is pretty tricky. On my 830, I open the door with light switch on the side. The bulb is a small bayonet fitting so push the bulb gently up, turn it to the left, release the up pressure and the bulb drops out. Reverse the process to put the new bulb in. All the best with your sewing. 🙂

Thank you so much for this video! My local sewing machine repairer retired and I'm not sure where to go for help. I have an 830. I oiled it as per your instructions. It purrs. But on trying to stitch, right on the first stitch the top thread snaps. Is there some tension spot that I can fix myself? On another note, I also have a 530. But when it got posted to me they didn't secure the machine in its box. So the tension knob in the front cracked and the split pin underneath broke. Is there anywhere that I can buy replacement parts for this? Thanks again!

Change the needle then rethread the top and before you thread the needle lower the presser foot and pull on the thread it should have tension but not so much it could break the thread. Check the tension dial move the the minus side and test sewing. Only a dealer will have parts to install on the 530

I have an 830 it was sewing beautifully, I took it in for service, nothing wrong, when I got it back home the bulb was burnt out, I took it back they said it was probably a short, replaced bulb, still works. I was doing decorative stitches, they don’t work, button hole doesn’t work. I checked the manual to see if I was doing something wrong. I went through all the stitches. Stitch length set on2, did all the stitches 0-20 0 stitch width, 2 stitch width and 4 stitch width on all of the stitches. It is not making the decorative stitch just straight stitch on 2 &4 width looks mostly like zig zag. Looked under the top. The cams are going around and the stitch # slides to the different stitches. Any ideas? I’m not sure I want to take it back, but the dealer is Bernini.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for posting all your great knowledge. I have a great old 38/39 vintage 117K. I've used it all the years I've had it since about 1958. It's become a little heavy for me so I'm using a newer Pfaff. It works great. I'd love to get the Bernina into a table that fits it, and still use it. Any advise?
