I am happy l came across your channel a few days ago. When l was a senior in school (won't say how long ago that was). I used a vogue pattern to make my prom dress in home Ed class. It was a coat and dress. I still have both in my cedar chest and now that l see you come across vintage vogue patterns maybe just maybe the pattern l used will show up. Would be nice to have pattern again to put with the dress. Long story about how and where the dress and coat where made. But l got graded twice on it. At the school l made the coat and started the dress l got an A+. The dress was finished at the second school and l got an A++. Also wore both the dress and coat in the school fashion school before my prom. Of course l was a size 12 then, can't say that now hahaha. It was 1968 when l made it.

I have a number of vintage patterns from the 1940s and 1950s that were my mother's, and yes, some of the envelopes are slightly crispy. This may freak out the archivists in the group, but I've found that an iron set on the lowest possible steam setting helps a lot with that. I test carefully to make sure the iron isn't going to spit water and press lightly without moving the soleplate until the creases are supple, then I straighten things out and press again. It's almost as though a small amount of moisture revives the paper, at least long enough to smooth it without any risk of damage. This also works on pattern tissue. Since the 1980s I've used Ziploc freezer bags to store some of the patterns I bought then, which may also freak out some of the archivists. I can report this: those that were stored in Ziploc bags are in significantly better shape than those that were not. On-line searches reveal a lot of often very lively discussion about using Ziploc bags in this way, but after 40 years I'll say they aren't damaging my patterns - quite the reverse. I've had no qualms about using them for my mother's patterns. Now I have a question: I repaired a few1980s pattern envelopes with bog-standard Scotch Magic tape way back then, and of course today it's yellowed and peeled off. I just found a product called Framer's Tape II and I can get a clear version. Does anyone know anything about this? In my inexperience I'll assume it has to be better than Magic, which I will not use to repair anything else now, especially those envelopes of my mother's patterns that are torn.

First, thank you for watching. Now here is my two cents on your question: 1. Newer ziplocks are better than older ones but still aren’t ideal. Comic book sleeves (or archival bags) are the best. 2. I haven’t tried steaming a pattern but I do iron mine to get them to fit in the envelopes. However, unless I knew my iron inside and out I wouldn’t try it. 3. Tape, if you want to tape them you need archival tape from Lineco. That is your absolute best bet.

@@StephanieCanada Clearly there was something in my reply to you the KZbin algorithm didn't like - one day I'll figure it out. Let's try again. Thank you for your reply; it was very helpful. I know my iron very well; it's like an extension of me. I still test for spitting, though, because even my hands sometimes don't work properly. As for the brand of tape you indicate, I did manage to find a Canadian source for it eventually; the same source has archival bags in many sizes too. There is a choice of document repair tape or mending tissue, so I'll pick one and give it a whirl. One listing for the repair tape on the Canadian version of an on-line retailer named for ancient female warriors (is this what it takes to foil the algorithm?) says a 12volt battery is required . . . okie-dokie. I have to admit I'm intrigued.

58:24 I literally just wrote HAVE TWO-DO NOT BUY next to one of the pattern numbers that I liked, so I understand this. In my defense, one is a 1940s print, and one is a 1950s whereupon they fluffed up the skirt a little.

Are vintage needles different from modern needles? I noticed a change around the '80's. The new needles have a groove above the eye. The old ones were round all over.
@StephanieCanada2 жыл бұрын
I prefer vintage ones (so long as they aren’t rusty). They are sharper and better made.
