Rusty - I watched several of your videos ( postcard guide and others) and have learned quite a lot. I'm a 68 year stamp collector and 49 year dealer but never got into postcards. Trying to learn enough to deal in them as well. The stamps on the cards are all very common both 1c and 2c. Stamp dealers sell them for a dime. The exception is the 2c red Lincoln stamp which is worth a buck and a half. It is a commemorative stamp. Commems are sold at post office for a few months as opposed to the others on your cards that are definitive (regular issue) stamps and are sold for years. Railroad cancels can be good. The name of the RR they traveled on is in the dial portion of the postmark. The smaller the railroad the better and can be worth a few bucks or more. Some of them show RMS (railway mail service) in the killer (wavy line portion) of the stamp. They add no particular value

Thank you for the very informative video about old post cards. Without knowing anything about their values, I have always enjoyed looking at them. I do have quite a few that have been passed down through my family, along with others that I have picked up over the years. One of my favorite cards that was sent to my grandfather in 1911 shows the post office in Winchester, Virginia, and has the following written message: “Autos go by every minute it seems, but give me a good horse “. Another card I have is a photograph of a store in Kelton, Utah with a covered wagon parked next to it. Today, Kelton, Utah is a ghost town with nothing remaining but a few stones in a cemetery. Another card that I have shows a woman in the back seat of an open automobile from about 1910 ( no date on the unused card) hugging the driver with the caption reading, “They say you can’t flirt in an auto “. Also, as an experienced philatelist, I should mention that most of the Washington Shield stamps shown at 23:35 are quite common, with the exception of several rare varieties. Since the postage rate at the time for sending a post card was 1 cent, the useage of a 2 cent stamp on a card would not be common as it would be over payment. These stamps were commonly used on envelopes as 2 cents was the letter rate then. The 1909 Lincoln stamp shown is a little more valuable, but it is not a rare stamp. It might add about $1 or $2 , but not $50 or $100. But, as you have said, one should always look for stamps on the back of old cards as some used stamps are very valuable.

I think the S and 10 store is actually a 5 and 10 store. Others called it a 5 and dime store back in the day. I'm just getting into selling post cards so this video is definitely a big help for me! I have 24 cards and found one with a red Washington Shield Stamp! I have a son that lives in North Carolina!

I don't find Postcards in the wild in Australia ..some antique shops on occasion.. I love ones with letters on back. Found one from early 1900s with a little girl and a letter ended up searching for her family ..found her grandson who contacted his dad I sent it to him he'd never seen his mum so young

I'm also in australia and recently came across over 1200 postcards for $15 in a random country op shop. Such a treasure trove. I'm now working with a friend of mine who is very in to genealogy and together we are piecing together ancestral pasts by my scanning and uploading of postcards and her genealogical research and connecting ancestors back to their modern bloodlines. It's incredible. My favourite pastime.

That is two fire departments competing. If you look closely there is a barrel hanging from a wire that they're shooting the hose at. The opposing team is spraying from the other side. Kind of, like tug-of-war only whomever gets the barrel to the opposite side wins.

Your "S 10 Store" was referred to as a "Five and Dime Store". I suppose it's equivalent to today's Dollar General. My mother worked at a Five and Dime Store when she was a teen in the early 30s. @16:19

Thanks for the info. I wish I had more $$ when I hit a 25c each 1900's-1930's collection. Must have been a thousand+. Did not realize at the time many of my favorite vendors/stores would close up shop for good or stop their $1 buy-it-now sales. I've collected current postmarks from Oregon, WA, CA, Alaska and HI using forgotten/vintage cards.

One question: when you are listing the postcards, do you erase the old prices and booth numbers from the cards before photography? (I scan postcards, it's easier to do in larger lots at once.) If you use a "white" eraser (not a Pink Pearl!) gently, you can erase the pencil marks without smearing the graphite or damaging the antique paper.
