Wonderful look at night crews, and the dangerous work we take for granted. Can you imagine the flack there would be if, for example in New York City, the ladies were told they had to “scrub the sleepers to remove dirt around the rails”. And they thought they had it tough selling tokens! These vintage films are priceless! More, more please.

Fantastic - and not a high-vis jacket in sight! This is one of the best of these I've seen. No BBC accents either!

This type of unrecognised work still goes on to this day all over the world. Shout out to the workers in Melbourne.

Amazing, I wonder how many good folks we lost to breathing toxic dust and who knows what. The giant 'knife' switches scared the heck out of me. Could not imagine trying to open one of these with a short down stream of you. One bloody big arc! . A scary time travel on this one. Still fascinating.

Another BTF gem when London Transport ( not TfL) knew how to run a good network.

I am still offended by the fact that an outfit like TfL has the legal right to use the London Transport roundel.

There was Health & Safety, it used to be called 'common sense', except that since committees started analysing and defining risk everybody has to be treated as if they are a mentally retarded chimpanzee with a death wish.

My grandad, George parker is one of the gangers in this film. He appears at 2.21, the 2nd man picking up his tools and again at 14.19. he is the chap in the white shirt sitting having his tea in front of what looks like a clown on the poster.. he is speaking, but can't quite make out what he's saying

Very interesting view of how things were done in the late 1950's. Is it true, as I have heard, that students and those on 'gap years' used to do some of the 'fluffing' work?

Used to operate on common sense when I was on the p way , everyone looked out for everyone else , no one was hurt badly in the 20 years I was on . Sadly I've heard that the elf and fairies are causing more accidents , people assuming they're safe rather than being more self reliant . 👍🇬🇧☕

And people don't realize that the film of that day, would be considered in today's vernacular,as ASA/DIN 10,and motion picture film, was even lower! However, that was state of the art,for its time!! Remember, that not many years previously, still photography still used wet processes,on both ends! Technology, is and was evolving, and what was good in one decade, was superceded by a quantum leap,or two in the next! Example- look a Kodak Tri-X,and read the speeds, from the 1950's on,went up from 150,to 200,thence to 400,and now with out any push processes- you can get 1600! The digital cameras are up in the six figures, again without additional pushing! History, not taught,or obscured, tragic, and stupid! Thank you,and from a photographer, broken in on 4×5 Graphics! As Weegee, put it ,F8,and be there!! Thank you,for your diligence and tenacity!! 😇😇😇😇😇💯💯💯💯💯😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
