I own three of these Kenmores. They can't be beat for ruggedness, power, smoothness, and piercing power. Of all the zigzag machines out there, these are the best. You simply can't go wrong. Even the foot pedal is the most comfortable.

I would have to agree, they are the best choice for anyone who wants a solid, inexpensive machine that will last forever. I use one of these for most of my own sewing!

I just found an identical one in the house I inherited from my parents, Your videos will be very helpful, Thank you Toby. I used to have a ring like the one on your left hand, I haven't seen one of those since the 70's. Keep growing your hair.

Thank you! Glad my videos are of some use. I still wear that ring to this day, though I've nearly lost it twice. My hair is short now! Had enough of long hair.

Thanks for the clear and interesting info on the Kenmore. I have several of the steel Kenmores from the old days...they are incredible! Diana, Washington state

I have one of these (well, 158.3201) that I want to resell on eBay but I know very little about sewing machines. Mine plugs in and the pedal works, the bobbin is already threaded (yay) but I've been looking for a video of how to thread this thing. I will use this video to learn how to use it though, it definitely terrifies me because I don't want to mess anything up lol!

I think this will work for me! I have one of those fold out 10’ x 10’ awnings that I want to sew some reinforcement patches onto. I think I can roll it up enough to get through the throat.

I just scored this machine from my bosses mother and I was wondering if you could go through and make a video on using it? Like threading and stuff.

I have my original 158.13200 bought in 1974. It has worked like a charm for all these years, but I am having difficulty with my buttonholer. I just sewed 3 buttonholes--no problem. On the fourth, the feed dogs seemed not to be pulling the buttonholer around the pinion gear. Would oiling the gear help? I have oiled the machine, but this gear has NEVER been oiled! Can you think of another reason for the lack of movement? The machine is working great--except for the buttonholer. I'm really enjoying your videos.

I have a Kenmore 10 model series 158.12512. can you show how to reposition the needle left or right?
@preacherman9018 Жыл бұрын
Hi Toby, Good video demo. Someone bought a valuable top of the line machine. I have a similar model 158.15251 Even after lubrication and a new needle it will not go slowly though 8 layers of denim. However, if I can get a running start, I can get through the heavy layers by more gas on the pedal. I'm wondering if I'm hurting my machine by running my vintage Kenmore fast through the heavy layers that will make the needle stick when running slowly?

It would be nice if you did a close-up on the settings so that we know how do you set it up

i have this machine and i love it but i bought it with a stuck width dial and can’t figure out how to fix it. do you have any suggestions or seen this problem before?

Just bought a 158 for $20. It's clean but the feeddogs aren't oscillating. Is that fixable?

I to know were I can get a manual for the kenmore 158.13200 ?
@normahesby58772 жыл бұрын
my 158.13200 all threaded but it just hums, wont sew?.....I played with the turn wheels on the right to disengage the needle while putting thead on the bobbin (it said to loosen screw to disengage needle but that didn't work) anyway wont sew now.....so frustrated...can you help...wheels on the right side seem so stiff? Sewing requires incredible patience! So easy to throw in the towel.😢

Thank you for your video. Can you tell me where I can buy zipper and gather foots from? I have the same machine 158.13200
@tobyssewingmachinerepair89492 ай бұрын
This machine takes low shank attachments, very common and easy to find. Just go to a good sewing centre and ask for a low shank zipper foot and gathering foot. Bring your machine at test it out to make sure.

I gave my wife this same machine in the mid70s. Do you live near 47118 area code. It needs repair i think it just needs a tuneup.

If it hums but needle doesn't move....belts? Broken? Thoughts?
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Жыл бұрын
It could be seized, or thread is jammed somewhere. I would take it to a trusted sewing machine mechanic. These are worth having professionally repaired.

Do the 158-series machines have all-metal gears, or just a certain few models? TIA ...
@tobyssewingmachinerepair89492 ай бұрын
Almost all of them are full metal. A few later models made in Taiwan have a nylon gear in them. But they are very solid machines regardless. The nylon half moon gears seen in the hook drive of most oscillating machines today are often gawked at, but it's really nothing to worry about. That gear does not bear the main load and almost never breaks. I have only every seen one broken in my time.

@@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Much obliged! I'm in the Calgary area and looking for a vintage machine for a retirement hobby. There's a few 158s listed on Kijiji so I'm doing research before buying. I just now discovered that even the Singers 401A, 403A and 404 had a Textolite plastic gear on the handwheel. Thanks again!

do you sell these? i need a kenmore 158, i know there’s 4 different models so i’m not sure if you have any, but please let me know.
