I have a 148.13101 I am trying to restore. It has a ton of seized parts and I cannot get the needle arm to respond any inputs from either the width or stich selector dial even after cleaning. Any suggestions about where to start?

Thank you so much for this video! I inherited this machine from my mom and had absolutely no idea how to thread it! Looking at the directions on how to thread it was very intimidating and confusing. I honestly didn’t think I was ever going to be able to use it!

Yeah this machine originally took those weird needles. Someone has modified this particular machine and I left it that way.

You brought up the bottom thread so much easier than it is on mine, i have to make sure the thread is around the hook otherwise i get a build up of top thread in the bobbin catchment. Does it have something to do with the needle length maybe?

Do the 158-series machines have all-metal gears, or just a certain few models? TIA ...
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Ай бұрын
Almost all of them are full metal. A few later models made in Taiwan have a nylon gear in them. But they are very solid machines regardless. The nylon half moon gears seen in the hook drive of most oscillating machines today are often gawked at, but it's really nothing to worry about. That gear does not bear the main load and almost never breaks. I have only every seen one broken in my time.

@@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Much obliged! I'm in the Calgary area and looking for a vintage machine for a retirement hobby. There's a few 158s listed on Kijiji so I'm doing research before buying. I just now discovered that even the Singers 401A, 403A and 404 had a Textolite plastic gear on the handwheel. Thanks again!

Lovely demo, enjoyed watching you sew and hear your soothing voice. Thank god for no music!! The sound of the machines humming is one of the most soothing sounds on the planet. It is the sound of creativity and domestic bliss. I love it. A few things to improve your videos: Tell us the full model number. Show how to thread it, and point out bobbin winder and what each dial does. This last thing was a bit vague. Don't force any dials that are stiff, you can break them. The plastic is old and brittle. See below how to revive them. I acquired 3 Kenmores recently, two 158, one 148. All so solid and precious. I have to sell two of them and keep one and it is a tough choice! I also have a vintage Viking 6030 (Swedish), a vintage Elna Lotus SP (Swiss), and a 1957-1962 Universal machine branded as Simon, made in Japan. This last one looks like a Morse, so hunky and full of shiny steel. The Kenmores are all from Japan and the model #19410 was made in 1975 by Maruzen, same Japanese company that made the Jaguar cars. All really beautiful and I love each of them. I have cleaned out the Viking and restored it from a seized condition. I am going to restore all the others. These machines are all metal inside and that is what makes them last so long and become heirlooms. The downside is that they need regular oiling. Never use machine oil like 3-in-1 on any sewing machine, which is what I had done to my Viking. It turns gummy and glues up the insides. Use Triflow Silicone Oil and Silicone grease for the gears. On seized machines where they are stiff or wheel won't turn - DO NOT FORCE ANYTHING!!! Spray with penetrating oil like Liquid Wrench and let that soak in, sometimes over a few days. You can make your own with 50:50 Acetone + Automatic Transmission Fluid - Store in glass jar. Wiggle parts around and keep spraying. You can also leave them in hot sun for an hour while soaking. Protect plastic parts. Or use a heat gun on low. This speeds things up. Once it is moving again, spray the guts with Carburetor Cleaner or Sea Foam engine cleaner and let sit a few minutes or hours, wipe off gunk. Spray, wipe down. Use alcohol or mineral spirits and scrub down parts with toothbrush, wipe down. Once all cleaned up and moving, use Triflow lube and grease. This does not break down like machine oil. Or use sewing machine oil. Oil up regularly at oil points in manual.

Very useful video, many thanks. I finally acquired a nice 158.19410 machine with low shank and it is very dry. Good to know where the oiling points are. Here are some tips from my previous cleanings: If your machine has seized up, and its mostly metal, use a heat gun (or open it up and leave in hot sun a couple of hours), spray carburetor cleaner on metal parts avoiding painted, plastic, and rubber parts. Wipe off, repeat. Then use penetrating oil (low viscosity) on all parts such as Liquid Wrench or a 50:50 mix of Auto Transmission Fluid and Acetone. Scrub with a toothbrush to remove gummy oil residue. Let it soak in and wiggle the parts till loose. This goes in fast and deeper than regular oil. You can also use alcohol to scrub and clean out machine or Mineral Spirits. Once machine is cleaned out and moving well, wipe off all that stuff, and lubricate with Triflow Silicone lube on shafts, and pack Silicone (synthetic) grease on gears. The grease will cling to gears unlike the liquid lube. Silicone does not break down into gummy residue, neither does sewing machine oil. Do not use WD40 as a lubricant, only as a penetrating oil (cleaner oil) Do not use 3-in-1 machine oil, or mineral oil or any other oil. This is what becomes gummy resin and seizes up the machines.
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Ай бұрын
Your methods seem slightly over-zealous, but as long as you clean those penetrating oils off properly and replace it with sewing machine oil, you're good to go. When it comes to grease, less is better. If you put too much, the gears will squeeze it out and it will fling onto other parts when the machine is running fast. Grease lightly and repeat every few years.

What should i do, when the side bobbin winding knob can't engage and is stuck?
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Ай бұрын
Basically you would look at the bobbin winder, find the joint that is stuck, clean it of any debris, and oil it. If you're not comfortable doing that, best to find a professional.

Thank you so much for this. I know it's a few years old so you might not see my comment but I have a German Saxonia Titan ( fiddle base hand crank) and the tension discs keep snapping my thread they squeeze so tight. How can they be adjusted, I don't see a screw. Thanks!
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949
@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 Ай бұрын
Hello! The tension adjustment is located on top of the faceplate, parallel to the needle bar. Its the screw closest to the operator. Also make sure you're using quality thread, old thread or cheap thread will snap always. Also make sure you'e got the right needle. Either an old 12x1 needle or a DBx1 needle insert lower in the clamp to make up for the shorter needle height.

Dr. John Michaels, If you look on my channel, you’ll see I’m not very active here anymore. Occasionally I check back to answer lovely comments such as yours. Thank you for taking the time to write. Basic parts for this machine like needles, needle plates, bobbin cases, feed dogs, etc, are the same as common single needle machines like the Juki DDL555 or Juki 8700. You can easily find these parts online or at an industrial sewing supply store. Parts more specific to the machine, I’m not sure. I only had this machine for a little while. I fixed it up and sold it after a couple of months. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours. Please confirm that you’ve read my response.

This machine takes low shank attachments, very common and easy to find. Just go to a good sewing centre and ask for a low shank zipper foot and gathering foot. Bring your machine at test it out to make sure.
