I had a 73 Elan back in the 80's. A guy and his 10 year old son came to buy it. The look of joy on that kids face when he took it for a test drive was priceless. Love the vintage sled vids! Keep em coming!

My 1st snowmobile was 1973 elan 250 SS , purchased in 1976 had it for the blizzard of 78 in LaPorte IN. Picked several neighbors stuck out on the roads, took them home , it was fun sled , but not as reliable as the single cylinder... Now, 48 years later, I found and now own another 250 SS..... the worst thing about them is your snow suit is smelling like gas ... Enjoy jim

Say good-bye to your nice snowsuit. My cousin had an Elan way back and if memory serves me the exhaust comes out aimed straight at the family jewels. After awhile the crotch area of your suit turns black with exhaust smoke 😂😂. My cousin actually melted the crotch of his suit right out 😂😂😂

Grew up spending winters in northern Maine riding older cats and Polaris around my grandparents property. Haven’t had a sled in about 10 years. But where I am in mass we don’t get enough snow to justify spending money on a sled. But man watching your videos I got the itch to find a beater and travel to the northern states man looks like so much fun.

I love my old sleds, I have a 79 Intruder, 80 TX340 and 96 Polaris Indy Classic. If I'm just having fun in the field, I take the old girls. Lighter, easier to get out if you do get stuck. For trail riding, the newer sleds are so comfortable, they are hard to beat. Heavy riding on an older sled and I am damn sore the next day

My first sled was a super old sno jet 340. And I rode the shit out of it every weekend I’d visit my dads. By the time I got older and got normal sleds I could ride anything. I’d go on full day trip rides on that 340 😂
@rubbabubba648911 ай бұрын
Have to laugh, did most my riding in the 90s on sleds from the 70s. Couple of my friends had new sleds and would bust my chops until they took my sled for a ride. They would dump it every time. Those old sleds take a lot of skill and body English. 40 doesn't sound fast until you're on a 70s sled. Like you said, we can ride anything! Same thing with the 3 wheelers I rode growing up. Only dangerous if u can't ride. Lol

I love it! Welcome to the fun of riding elans! It definitely takes some time to figure out body position, they are vary tippy. My feet are usually behind the running board supports. If nothing else, its quicker to eject in case of roll over lol. If it continues to bog in deep snow or going up hill, find NOS OEM drive & driven clutch springs. Old sleds rule!

Had one of those when I was a kid. You need to ride with one knee on the seat and other foot on the opposite running board and quickly flip back and forth as you change turns. Riding them both feet in the tunnel running boards is too tippy and like riding a mechanical bull. Also only had one bogie spring per bogie set so easily broke suspension springs. Was a riot to ride though, our Elan was half the cost of most of my friends' full size 1971 machines but twice the fun, great in powder and if it got stuck just pulled it out.

If you really enjoy riding Elan you have t 10:52 a set of ski spreaders make a world of difference I believe they’re 3 inches wide o find a late 70s Elan with a twin cylinder 294 with slide suspension from the factory expansion chamber style exhaust pipe from the factory with dual carburetors wider handlebars softer seats. very good option is to build a very good option is a 2 x 4 storage compartment under the total length of the seat you can use a hinged bracket typically used on a shed door for your carburetor/engine cover

Back in the day we didn't have GPS, cellphones and junk and stuff, so dependability was paramount in the design of the average snowmobile. More of a utility type of design like the early KLR's. I think you should get one of those cameras that fallow whoever is wearing the wristband and put it on a tripod or even a mono pod stabbed into the snow, especially when you ride in open fields. All the best!
@GotrekGurninsson11 ай бұрын
That was the sled they gave us as kids we went everywhere on our elans, snow princes, rupps, I don’t think any of our sleds ever had working brakes so we never had your issue :)

Just flip the bogies back over. You didn’t break them they just flipped on the shaft. Another tip if your handy pop the secondary off and add 1 full twist to the spring. They downshift a lot better and wont bog or lug as much and make for better throttle response. Also make sure the primary has some lube on the arms. Enjoy 👍
