I see alot of people seem to dislike this idea however there are two important things to remember here. 1: it's their car and they can do what they want with it. 2: it's no different than what these machines were exposed to back when they were new. Good Roads weren't a common thing back then so these old battle axes can handle a days fun trying to climb muddy hills.

@@EllDub Irishman Rally isn't really a trial, more just a rally with some off-road sections. There is a trial series held in the South Island. The first event was held in the Christchurch area more than 30 years ago, and was inspired by the VSCC type events. In more recent years events have been held near Reefton and in Marlborough and Nelson. In its present form the Christchurch event is purely an off road event held on one property, but I can see a possible return to the British style event, for road registered cars and with road sections being used.
@markdawber46662 жыл бұрын
The VSCC has been holding those trials for decades. Here in NZ there are plenty of events for 'less than pristine' vehicles.

A video popped up with newer, home-made looking little cars on a pretty tight little uphill track and then I saw this video and couldn't believe it. 😂 In NZ these cars would be close to or over 100k if they're legit vintage and even replicas are worth a lot. The rarity is also a big factor here although if everyone cleared out their old sheds I'm sure there'd be more than people realise. Motorcycle trials is pretty popular here but yeah, this is the first time I've seen it with cars. Using the home-made cars looks relatively inexpensive and as the tracks are so tight there aren't high speeds which ultimately makes it less dangerous and more accessible

its funny to see the white gloves collectors whine about the way these are being used, as if these cars won't outlive all their current owners and even longer still. These people in the video are more likely to keep the car in running working order, because they actually use them and break them, so they are more knowledgeable about the cars limits, and also more knowledgeable about how to repair them. When those white-glove collectors want to take their car out one day, but its broken, who do you think they get the knowledge of how to fix it from; these guys of course. Considering you called it petrol I'm guessing you live in the UK? Not sure what Model A prices are like over there but I know they aren't that rare. My recommendation, go to car shows and ask around, you'll get far better prices than any classic car dealership on the internet most of the time. So to answer how long would they last? I’m modern mileage terms not very long but in context they would have been maintained and kept serviced by a the local village blacksmith or engineer. The origin of these trials was to showcase how sturdy and reliable cars were to an eager public, to complete the Lands End trial meant sales. You should come along to a trial and see first hand, I’m sure you would appreciate the machinery and be in awe of what it can achieve.
@markwright31612 жыл бұрын
@@michaelconrad9176 Wouldn't this era of car have been built to be the same sort of investment as a house, so something to be bought then passed down generations, and built to cope with these conditions being the standard road conditions at the time? At the bare minimum they're replacing a horse and cart for many, which could see the best part of half a century come round of total lifespan, 25+ years working hard I imagine, so will have been engineered to match that at least, or better considerably to justify their cost given they can't spawn their own replacements, and it's also the era of making the best product possible, not scrimp on materials like now, so a light car chassis then would be a medium commercial chassis now. I think that was the intention behind the Ford Model T originally, basic motoring yes, but long term hand-me-down mobility for the masses, until competitors decided to start the charge to yearly model changes in the States and subsequent engineered obsolescence we see today, be it in reliability or 'technological developments' and 'modern' or 'up-to-date' designs being rotated like seasons for clothing styles. Nothing can last forever without maintenance. Drive a car 10 miles a year or 10'000 miles a year, both will need their upkeep. Even a pristine restoration doing 0 miles per year will fall apart eventually and need restoring again, so you might as well drive it until it needs it and get your fun out of it. You might need to restore it a bit sooner, but it's not going to outlive you without regular work on it even sitting doing nothing. If anything the engine will seize, etc leading to more work after not very long if anyone wanted to take it for a spin, every annual short hop would need significant recommissioning in that case. Of course you need to budget various degrees of restoration every decade or so, but if you compare to how much people will be spending on leasing their transport now, never to actually own it, just pay more every 3 years for another technological time bomb, I don't think the costs would be that far apart, between one of these cars being driven in these conditions and a second new car being leased. One thing is for sure, you'd be facing far higher repair bills, more frequent component failures and much less success running these trials in a leased faux-by-four. :)
