Thanks for the video. I still have a sunburst ‘74 Tele Deluxe with 2 humbuckers that I bought new in middle school in ‘77. The price was marked down quite a bit, because it had sat in a music store for three years. They were not popular at the time. Fender people didn’t like them because they were too much like a Gibson, and Gibson people didn’t switch because they didn’t like Fenders. I bought it w/case for $350 with money I had from a summer job - FYI, that’s about $1,600 in today’s dollars. I think it had been around $500 originally. Those pickups are something else. It was my first electric guitar and I will never sell it.

My 73 lefty tele was my first ( expensive) guitar bought for me fir Christmas of either 87 or 88 and I remember my dad buying it from me second hand shop for £250 ( the bloke wanted £300) and the story was it was bought new by a gigging musician who played in numerous club bands in the 70s but unfortunately fell on hard times in the late 80s and had sold a lot of his gear to just live! I'm the second owner and have the original paperwork from the day it left the shop in Newcastle England...... love the thing

I believe these are the best guitar Fender ever designed. You can argue whether execution was always good (70s era QC issues, weight, your aforementioned issue with the underpowered bridge,, etc.), but having that true Tele bridge pickup that has been wound up to match that special WRHB with truly independent tone/volume controls allows so many tonal options.

Matthew, the restoration of your 59 Strat was one of your earliest videos. While its a great story, those early videos don't do the restoration justice. Wow, that is very nice! The humbucker sounds a lot better than I imagined these would sound.
@ChrsGuit3 жыл бұрын
I prefer the sound to a traditional humbucker... especially a modern h.b. I've never understood the hype with P.A.Fs. I'm certain the original ones are legit, being they were intentionally designed to mimic the snap and bite of the P-90 but without hum... That being said, every modern Gibson PAF or other humbucker just sounds muddy to me. Some Duncans sound pretty good, but I think many manufacturers try to make a pickup so hot that it ends up compressing and losing all the headroom and clarity.
@DeffoZappo3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrsGuit I like what Ola Englund said about pickups. He said that when you start with a really hot pickup there is no wiggle room, you can never really dial it back. But if you have a medium output pickup you can always add more in the signal chain with pedals etc. and you will have more dynamics with the med/lower output. It reminds me of cooking and what a chef once said to me that he could "fix anything but burnt and salt". You can always add more salt but you can't take it away.
@ChrsGuit3 жыл бұрын
@@DeffoZappo I agree. I've found myself using lower and lower output pickups as the years go by. They seem to do a better job of retaining headroom and clarity... It also helps as we get more and more experienced to not confuse weak pickups with an actual problem with the guitar, amp, etc. Bad grounds, dirty switches, broken cables, corrosion, etc.

Greetings. Two days ago, I purchased a 1974 Fender Telecaster Custom. The guy I bought it from found it at an estate sale. The former owner sure used it as a tool for playing. He put a belly cut into the back side, and a small forearm contour at the front. The wide range pickup had been rewired a bit for coil splitting, but I rewired it to original format with the original shielded wire that was in the guitar. Bridge pickup is original, and two 1 meg pots. He had a Schaller 3D6 roller bridge on it, and Schaller black/chrome machines, as well as knurled knobs. I have ordered some Fender F tuners, witch hat knobs, a bridge plate and saddles from an American Vintage telecaster, an i am making a bone nut to replace the graphite nut. The three-tone sunburst with black pickguard and maple fingerboard sure look like 1974.
