This set is super fun! An absolute classic toy yet again from Plarail, especially cool given the 50th anniversary ties! Japanese rolling stock is really neat to see alongside your awesome customized Thomas and James. The types of wagons/van reminds me of and seems like the types of rolling stock one would see in Japan in the 1940s/1950s, which given that Thomas originated in the 40s, feels kinda fitting in a way!

Decided to see how well TM2 engines ran on Plarail track… they don’t run well and constantly slip, guess backwards compatibility with Tomy/Plarail was out of the question when Mattel made it

As a kid I had the really old Tomy Thomas sets that were totally inaccurate proportions with the dark blue track. They came with those 1/3 straights too. I loved building sets and placing the people like the one in this set in the cab of my engines or their coaches.

It's kind of shocking that with the success Tomy U.S. mist of had from bringing over the Thomas Plarail that they never just brought over the whole range. They have some much cool real world engines like the Shonan Monorail and other pop culture stuff like Pokemon trains and Disney trains. There Spiderman bullet train and Demon Slayer trains are two of my personal favorites.

1:30 Tomy did make an Amtrak set that includes a Amtrak engine and 2 coaches, they also made some single packs like the Virgin HST (which I own), Eurostar and TGV

I inherited my Tomy stuff from my older brother so I had literally two huge storage crates of dark blue track and the lego-esque set peices they use to sell. This was back before the licencing so I have the original red steam engine and the intercity express with magnetic couplers. If you can find the original motorised Thomas and friends stuff, it's very different from what people are use to. They're all chunky and have a space for a driver to sit in. Back then the motors were interchangeable and fit any engine shell onto them which was neat - the switch was on the back and the chassis had a reverser on the bottom so you could make linear layouts.

I had a single 1/3 track piece as a kid from the huge ass Thomas set (that was definitely the name on the box) and that track piece was so damn useful. I remember always coming short in cool layout ideas just because I needed a 1/3 rail piece when it was already used in the layout. Good times.

5:13 I knew they existed thanks to the Smith-Thompson catalogs, but they already stopped carrying Tomy products by the time I needed some (circa 2006). The vendor at my local Day Out With Thomas didn't have any so my mom and I resorted to importing some from Thailand along with those wide parallel switches at 5:36. I think the Hypercity range of 2011-12 had adapters too.

@TrainBoy we did get 1 American locomotive! It was a special Amtrak that looked like I think the F7’s… It is super rare now and usually the only thing you may find will be the coaches. I’ve looked and never found an engine for a good price.

Outside of Thomas I really appreciate Tomy Plarail Japanese Engine Ranged been planning to buy one although I'm undecided which engine should I start? Anyways speaking of Plarail doing American Engines there was a relase of Jurassic World theme set with an American diesel locomotive which gives hope they will release American theme engines which maybe an opportunity worth exploring!

I think a lil bit of WD40 as well as some minor cleaning with a brush of some sort will clean the corrosion grime off, not sure though. As for reattaching the nub thingy, I’m no expert but I think (?????) soldering it in place might work? Either that or find a way to replace it. You’ll probably also need to do a little bit of restoration work on the mechanism but I think that’s save-able. Of course, I’ve literally never done this myself, so ehhh? Take what I say here with a grain of salt.
