You are a life saver! I am an old model railroader, 50 years old, getting back into and restoring old locos and other stock, but I took apart one of these that is still dead, and broke a brass connection that goes into the steam generator I think, more on that later, but the engine is dead, I will try using this video, I think I can take it apart now with confidence. Thank you for keeping my favorite hobby alive! My trains will hopefully pass to my gran children some year if my son ever gets married again, if not, I will put you in my will to take possession of my collection.

Hi Bud, I have really enjoyed going back and watching your videos. It’s great how you give a second life to these forgotten classics. We often get caught up into the whole “prototypical” model railroading (myself included) and seem to forget about the nostalgic model trains that got us into the hobby. Keep doing what you do! I’m loving it and it’s really making me reflect back to when I was young and had such great times running trains with my grandfather. John

I had 2 of those new back in’79 or ‘80. Still have them. One was blue, The Royal Blue 638 and the Chattanooga 638. I renumbered the Chattanooga the 630 back then so they would be different numbers and, I painted out the tender black to letter it for my RR. Someday, I want to revive the old Tyco layout. Over 30 years gone by since it was running!

Nothing but faith in you getting the Chattanooga running Harrison. Run it with the Andrews Sisters singing in the background and you have a winner. Two words - - spare parts. Build up the graveyard with cheap locomotives you can cannibalize when needed. Just don't tear apart the Canadiana!!! 😱 Great job, it just needed to warm up a little and break in the reassembled parts. 👍👍👍

Ya could make a new draw bar for that loco and tender,by just getting a sheet of styrene plastic (an old "for sale" sign works great), then cutting a few strips, gluing them together and then drilling small holes on the ends to fit the parts together.

SMT - If the Royal Blue's drawbar is removable, you could install it on the Chattanooga steamer for a test. If it works, you can fabricate one for the Chattanooga. I was wondering if the locomotive's wheel bearings, valve gear bearings, & cross head guides should also be lubricated? Has anyone added weight to a Tyco powered tender & found it to help the operation ? The tender pushes the locomotive & pulls the train, I thought of adding weights for traction. I imagine replacing the traction tires may be a good idea.

You have to connect the wires to the blocks the conductor wheels go to in the tender. The Engine just needs power for the light and smoke box. There should be a positive and negative running to the engine.

@SMTMainline5 жыл бұрын
Parts of the track have little spaces in between the rails separating them from the rest of the track, the separated seconds can be turns on and off with switches.

So i have been working on mine. I found a way to get the contacts springs and little bushing things in. It runs but it will only run by completely lifting the rear wheels off. So i disconnected the wire to that boggie and taped it off to isolate it and i still have to lift the rear axle off. I tried flipping the axle around thinking it draws from 1 track .but that didn't work. I reassembled it to its original set up and still have to lift thd rear axle off for it to power up. I cant figure it out.

Mine has the same problem with track contact. I have to hold the tender wheel against the rails. They never keep contact. Mine and same with mine stops and goes. I find with a hesvy weighted car behind the tender it stays running a little longer but when it hits a uneven track or miscontact it will stall.

Big Fan of your channel. One question though. What is the minimum curve radius that you use on your layout? I'm in the process of planning a layout similar in side to you. I notice you have some full sized VIA and GO passenger cars. Just wondering what your curve radius is and how well those cars make it around those curves?
@SMTMainline5 жыл бұрын
I use 15" radius on industrial sections where only small switchers have to go and while this works, I wouldn't recommend it. 18" is the lowest on most layouts because it can support the majority of mid sized locomotives although if you have the space I'd just go right to 22".
@nesmandan10372 жыл бұрын
I normally use 22”, but just tried 4-18” sections for a quick test station and had multiple derails just goin back and forth. Ran fine on 22” though

I just bought one of these new old stock. The smoke fluid was almost completely evaporated in the old tube, so I did not dare to add it to the smoke fluid reservoir because it was very viscous. Instead I added 10 drops (as per instructions) of Bachmann HO smoke fluid (in the hold where the bell goes) and got no smoke even after 10 minutes of high speed running. Instructions say to use Tyco smoke fluid #713. Anyone know of a good fluid to use on these smokers?
