This piece is exquisite…like the colors of the sky. You are a true artist…I couldn’t visualize how this was going to come out and even cringed when you put the gray paint over the color toward the end but it was the perfect choice. This looks like it would be for sale in a high end design boutique. I hope you get a lot for it…this is no run of the mill redo…it’s art.

Does the gilding wax come off eventually? I've been wondering that for a while now. Wax isn't always permanent. Does look beautiful, though!
@elegantupgrades2 жыл бұрын
It depends on placement. If you put guilding wax on a place where the oils from peoples hands touch repeatedly it will slowly wear off. You can combat that by sealing it with poly or shellac or another type of topcoat. You would just want to make sure it’s completely dried before applying one of those.

This piece looks beautiful!! I wasn’t sure about it when you added the grey overtop, but it turned out wonderful! My girlfriend has a vanity she loves but it’s got a lot of burn marks in it and everything… I really want to refurbish it for her, although I’ve never done anything like that before. Could you please let me know what kind of tools and paints I would need? Thank you!!
@elegantupgrades Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Austin! I probably can’t give you the perfect list because every piece is different and requires different tools and products. But from you described, I can try to give you a start- you’ll want a cleaner/degreaser to clean your piece, wood filler of some kind and a scraper to apply it, sandpaper ( most likely start with 220) and a sander, I did most of my work by hand when I started so you can just do that, a primer that prevents bleed through (spray shellac is great, but there are many that work), the Wooster angle brush is great and really inexpensive, the paint I use is from Chalk Mountain (but there are tons of paints out there and everyone has their own favorite), a sealer of some kind (my preference is a water based poly, I probably use Varathane the most, but again, there are other great ones). That is an incredibly basic list, but without seeing it and knowing what you want the end result to be, it’s difficult to include all that is needed. I hope that was at least moderately helpful!

Beautiful. Would you be able to share brushes did you use for blending. Seems easy to work with. Thank you

Sure! I’ll shoot you my Amazon links. But if you just want to look yourself- I always use the Chalk Mountain Brushes for the swirl blend and the Wooster Shortcuts for the back and forth blends. Wooster- amzn.to/3JMSmE9 Chalk Mountain- amzn.to/3HFY3lt

those metal waxes make the stencils look embossed. if you pay a bit more in the art section and buy art bushes instead of craft, they can last you a long time if you clean them and keep them properly, I have an art blush that is 35 years old..yes it has been used...washed after every use and laid on it's side and kept brush side up in a jar. you can get even better brushes from the art supplies on line..they just have a better quality. it looked so beautiful.

You did a beautiful job . You use joint compound for raised stencil? It’s so reasonable. Obviously you don’t wash it off down the drain . How do you clean it specifically between using the stencil? I want to buy this product because it’s such a good price just afraid how I dispose of it in between using the stencil and how I clean it off in between
@elegantupgrades2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And in the video you can see me wipe it with a wet wipe- that’s usually how I do a quick clean in between. I will also put it on a flat surface and use the putty knife to scrape it off. Then all the extra from scraping I put back in the container I mixed it in (it’s usually an old cottage cheese or sour cream container). Once it dries I just squish the container and the bits pop right out and I toss them in the trash. I hope that helps!

Ok. Wow! I admit I was very skeptical as you moved thru your color phases. But I really liked the end result. Definitely an ethereal look!! I watch a lot of these videos and for sure learned some new techniques from you. I’m surprised that you said part of this piece was plywood because the drawers had dovetail joints. I also wondered about your raise stencil medium. Is it like a joint compound or more like cement? I’m always concerned about durability when experimenting with different products and joint compound as well as spackle will chip easily. Loved your stencil!! Where did you get it? Super cool look!! I also LOVE how you used the different gilding waxes on the raised stencil. So beautiful!! The gray wash really transformed this piece too! Do you make it yourself? I’m definitely a new subscriber!!
@elegantupgrades2 жыл бұрын
Hey Holly! Thanks so much for subscribing! So glad you learned some new techniques. Yes, it’s plywood, you can actually see them in the dovetails as well as along the top edge. If I remember I’ll try to show it in the companion dresser video coming out. The raised stencil is a joint compound. I haven’t had any issues with chipping at all once the piece is sealed. I would imagine if it went on too thick then perhaps it could chip, but I’ve been using it for years without any problems. With that said, I always make sure the surface I put it on is properly prepped for adhesion. The stencil was a gift from one of my subscribers and it’s linked in the description box. The gray wash is just my gray paint watered down- usually about a 50/50 mix but if I’m honest I never measure. I just add water until I like the consistency. I think I covered all your questions, but if I missed something just let me know! Thanks so much for watching!

I’ve used it for years without any issues. I always make sure my piece is properly prepped and the joint compound is completely set up and fully sealed - both of those things will give it extra strength. I also have never applied it where it would get a lot of wear and tear- that’s not to say I wouldn’t try doing a raised stencil on a wooden knob with it, I just haven’t yet so I can’t give my experience.

"I didn't want to throw out this piece... out of rage." For those of us who do this type of work, girl, that's a mood 😆🤣 This turned out beautiful, Taryn! So sparkly but definitely not unicorn. Are you selling this one? I bet it goes quick!

Haha, yes, I know you know the feeling 😂. I will be selling it with the dresser as a set. I haven’t done a vanity dresser set yet, usually I do nightstands and dressers or a set of dressers so we shall see how it goes.

saw where you smeared the top drawer when you were staining the top, did you scrap it off and redo it?
@elegantupgrades2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t show staining the top in this video so I’m not sure what part you are talking about. But I typically get the tops done and sealed before final rounds of painting so if I get any paint on the top as I work it just wipes off.

@@elegantupgrades at5:35 start in the video watch just a bit further 539/40 where you start to stain the top your shirt rubs against the top drawer stencil...it looks like it smeared bit...it looked it to me, you must not have, but it sure looked it, I kept saying watch your shirt!! LOL

Oh! Haha, I have “shop” clothes because I can’t be trusted. I went to look and couldn’t find where I got it on the stencil, that doesn’t mean I didn’t 😂 But it wouldn’t have mattered since I hadn’t even started the painting on the base yet. Like I said, I usually do the top first and seal it before starting the base so I don’t have to worry about getting stain on a completed finish. That would ruin my day.

This This is what I needed...lol for you to slow down. I think I can learn how to blend from you but I need you not to speed through. I understand what you mean by not wanting to bore us but girllll you ain't boring us we love your painting. But it seems like all the artists on these tutorials go so fast , like they know we can't get it

I’m glad it helped, Angela! I’ll try to incorporate more slow clips in my videos for those of you who want it. It does help to know what you all need from me so I appreciate you speaking up!
