I got my 68 back in 99 as a 19 year old. I told my wife, go find me a 68 Mustang. I was on a 6 month deployment to the Persian Gulf. She took every penny we had saved up and when I got home she walked me over from the pier to the most beautiful car I'd ever seen. I still have both of them to this day👍

My 68 got me to work and back from Los Angeles to San Diego every day when I was about to get out of the service back in late 02 /early 2003. After the service I got another car since our family was growing so the 68 mostly sat until it overheated in 2010. We put a 302 from a 92 in it woth all the accessories from the old 289. Life always has a way to keep me from starting her up so I've been trying my hardest to do that very soon so watching these videos gives me hope. Has a rebuilt 302 from back in 2010 that's never been started. It will happen soon!

Good info to know. I put a carb with a manual choke on my old car as I got tired of messing with it to get it to reliably work in hot and cold weather. A manual choke is also a great anti theft device! 😁

OMG the Condenser charged in auto shop in high school LOL

Although the voltage itself would be low, the amount of charge (as measured in coulombs) would be sufficient to create consternation.

I have seen a no start with a choke that wasn’t working. There are two remedies to fix this, 1 fix the choke and 2 pump the gas until there is enough gas to create the rich mixture to start the engine.

First day of shop class I walk in and on the metal table in front of every metal stool is a condenser. I sit down and look at it, but don’t touch it and look over at the teacher having a big grin on his face. Later as others walk in people start hollering. They didn’t just look. :) All of the condensers were charged to prove a point, if you are not sure it is safe, don’t touch it. It was a cool class for seventh grade me.

My go to tool for testing an ignition system is a good O 12v test light. It works with points and electronic ignition. Put the neg on the neg side of the battery and with the key on you should have a bright light on the pos side of the coil with the key on, Put the test light on the neg side of the coil and when you turn the engine over the test light should flash

I found out how much spark the flame thrower on my truck puts out the other day when I thought I wasn't getting any, when the person helping me started turning it over before I got the coil wire to a ground point. It turns out the spark will find you. 😂😂😂 BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL! The truck said I had a 1/4 tank nope bone dry.

For some tests, I would prefer an analog meter. It can clearly show the steady, curved nature of the condenser charge, whereas the reading on a digital meter might get confused with intermittent readings. Although there are other tests that can be done on a condenser, honestly, the test shown is usually sufficient, and a condenser doesn't cost very much. For reading the voltage going to the Igniter, I saw a bouncy reading that did settle on the desired indication. Many digital meters have a hold function that captures the highest reading, whereas with an analog meter, one might see where the high point of the bounce is. Jeff is right about treating modern electronics as delicate. Tubes can tolerate radiation bursts that would fry transistors or integrated circuits, and point-style ignitions can tolerate a much broader range of operating conditions than solid state circuits. If memory serves, Pertronics systems can fail without good grounding and heat sinks, whereas the lack of such items with pure points is much more easily tolerated. Doesn't mean that points are better, just that they can handle harsh environments a little better.

Amps. That's the important part of knowing the battery's health. You can have 11-12 volts but the (work) amps barely or won't at all pull 100-200A needed to crank.

Great information, gets me thinking I too may have a slight electrical draw through my ignition; checking that out tonight. And yes, I’d very much like to see more in to why the issue(s) in running and those corrections

Your unstable voice inflections are not as bad. Not as much real high . then a pause and etc...etc & your tone is much better! To me this makes you appear more confident & pleasant & mature, well until almost the end. I learned 2 tips that I think you improved/easier than standard procedures that have been covered for 50 years at least by ALL the automotive gurus. Also thrilled you were smart enough to add the Pertronix information !!! I think you should have said Pertronx ignitor basic is the only one you have to worry about leaving the key. Or maybe that one specific test pertains to all versions, but you can leave the key on II & III for most other reasons. I have only seen a few videos of your since right before you hit 100,000 subscribers. Congratulations.....finally.........now we do not have to listen to you BEG for 100,000 anymore. I think your doing great & wish more improvement & success!!! Very good video~~~Thank-You~~~

Please remind people that a remote start switch BYPASSES the neutral safety switch (for automatics). When the engine starts the car will immediately move if it’s not in park or neutral. Also for safety, don’t stand in front of the vehicle when using remote start. Thanks for your great videos

Leaving ignition switch on with pertronix 1 will harm the module. This was fixed with pertronix 2 and 3. You can also fry the pertronix 1 module by erroneously hooking it up backwards. (Ask me how I know!). Again, this won't happen with pertronix 2 or 3. They fixed this issue. Love my pertronix 2, flame thrower2 coil, and pertronix 500 ohm per foot plug wires! Love your videos, too!

We don't know, but that spark from the primary wire looked much too weak to ever start the car. Is there another test we can do for the coil?
@et76039
@et76039 3 ай бұрын
Yes, but not everyone is brave enough to try. Get the peak output voltage from the coil; it's basically a stepup transformer that operates on pulsating DC. First, ensure you have good voltage on the primary side. Unsure of the exact specifications here, but I recall claims of 15,000 to 40,000 volts for healthy aftermarket coils. Check again when it's hot, as some failures aren't apparent until operating temperature.
