These paints appear to date from the seventies or early eighties from the print style on the labels. Any earlier and they were even more minimal. They seem to have survived very well, the madder lake may well have had a pink pigment that was quite fugitive even in the pan…. It is kind of reassuring in a way because if this is how well watercolour survives the years then finished work stands a chance too. Another thing I noted was they did seem to be quite opaque and concentrated, and have a more solid look than modern pans have. Interesting video.

I think that’s the Talens logo on the underside of the pans.

You can still visit the factory in the centre of Apeldoorn where they were made. However next year Talens is moving to a new location.

@@Dan.B.Artist Yes, they will move to the north of Apeldoorn. However it will no longer be possible to walk amidst the production process. Fun fact: Old Holland you can also visit in Driebergen; first tuesday of the month: 10 pax maximum.

Lovely. Beautiful colours indeed. I saw them at Clairechi's but... I decided not to buy. I have a few left from my mother (also W&N halfpans). Still pondering: shall I open them or leave them... ??? But indeed, Royal talens doesn't seem to have any archives (or doesn't want to share). When I reached out for more info I got the answer that one older employee who might know more was on holiday and they would contact me on his return. But... no archives... ???!!!! So strange...
