Vintage WEM "Amusement Park" Road Signs featuring Fantasyland & Cosmo - Best Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall used to use these signs to direct visitors to Fantasyland at WEM. They were first put up alongside major roadways from around 1983 to 1994, when the park changed names and became known as Galaxyland, the Cosmo signs were then used until around 2013 when we starting seeing the mall's 'W' logo used instead.

Those Cosmo signs remind me of heading to work there in the late 90s. I knew I was getting close when I saw that sign and would feel a sense of dread :) But now, I think they have a lot more character than the glitzy "W"!

I'm topographically challenged, and the signs pointing towards WEM were foundational in building my sense of direction after moving here. Living in Vancouver, I conditioned myself to know that "west = home" while driving in the surrounding cities... because there's nothing west of Vancouver itself. So the first time I got lost driving in Edmonton, I followed the signs to WEM. The first and only time - as that day I learned, my home is in the EAST quadrant of Edmonton. Nice sign, dude! ✌️🍍

I always used to look outside the window for those signs as a kid. Being outside the city it was a long trip to the mall but just seeing those signs was the signal that we were so close to the mall. Just knowing what was coming after passing those signs is what kept me awake. God the amount of nostalgia in those signs is crazy.

I hadn't thought about those signs in years! I remember seeing them the first time that my family went to the mall when we were new to Alberta in 1999. As a new 13 year old, it was exciting to see those signs on the road. The novelty of them wore off after I became accustomed to living in Edmonton. But, the spark has returned after being in Japan for almost five years. 😅

I remember as a kid I was always confused by the Cosmo road signs. I didn't connect it to the mall/galaxy land and I always thought there was something else cool I never got to experience. When I was a teenager I finally asked my friend who very anti-climatically explained it's just the mascot for galaxy land. Btw I was so happy when you mentioned you have the original mural from the water park room! When I heard the room was no more, I just assumed the art was lost as well.

I think I remember those Signs as a kid not sure as I was always Focused on the Roof the WEM and then the Building and of course the Parking Lot when ever we were taken being Driven to the Mall, verses the option of staying home and watching Movies and or Playing Video Games and getting Dumb and Fat. And it also Triples as a Great way to Entertain and as our Equivalent of The Zoo. When we where Kids. And on so many levels I'm so Grateful for that. But times has changed for us as we seem to go to Edmonton Less and Less with Each passing Year with the last Time being Way back in 2015 or so ago and even then our plains to go to WEM was Canceled at the Very Last Minute.

They had to strip any kind of personality out of the city. Another example is the "City of Champions" sign.

Disneyland sued Edmonton for using the word Fantasyland. That's why the name changed to Galaxyland
