West Edmonton Mall's Galaxyland's current space theme may have been in place since the mid-1990's, but it was conceived a decade prior... in the early 1980's.
Original concept art plans for the park's expansion reveal that the Fantasyland theme of the time was meant to be only a part of the amusement park theme... there was far more impressive imagery imagined.
Topics in this segment include The Drop of Doom, The Orbitron, The Zipper, The Mindbender, The Saker One Space Probe, Astro Base Alpha, and of course, the original concept art for Galaxyland at WEM!

Concept designers: "We're going to have two parts. The first will be a lovely 19th century theme with a lake, artificial mountain, quaint rides, gingerbread trim buildings, and tonnes of Crystal Palace-style glass and ironwork. The second will be a full-on space station. Real 2001, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica kind of stuff. Laser shooting rides, a nightclub, and windows looking out into an artificial starfield. I'm loving this series! I never knew that Galaxyland had an earlier, more "hard" sci-fi design ala Star Wars. Interesting how the final version ended being a bit of a blend between the two original themes - the whimsy and colour of Fantasyland combined with the space-age style of proto-Galaxyland. (And honestly, as a late 90s/early 2000s kid, I'm more than happy with the result!) I'm also intrigued by the idea of the anti-gravity ball ride - it seems so fun and futuristic, but also slightly dangerous if the balls crashed into each other!

The indoor Zipper was something else. I recall a lot of vomit. It actually smelled of popcorn vomit once when I was waiting in line. They had to pause for quite a while to clean the carts

Riiight? I have a very grainy picture of when I first went to West Edmonton Mall back in 1993. You can kinda see the balloons, and the swing of the century. My dad got a new job in BC so we were moving and stopped in Edmonton for the night. For some reason the tunnels scared me, and same with the sub ride

This sounds like a Big Budget Project they couldn't manage, but It is still very very interesting to see development history on stuff like this. and you know what? I'm happy that Galaxyland is one of the worlds largest indoor theme parks, I'm happy with whatever they pulled off, I'm happy its one of the main attractions of West Edmonton Mall, It ain't much but its Honest work Galaxy Land also holds another title to its legacy (getting threatened by Disney lmao) (Unrelated but speaking of Disney, I had this one dream where they incorporated "Space Mountain" into the park, it was soooo cool)

Dude, that Disco Dynamo ride freaking WHIPPED so fast lol. I dunno if I could even handle it and I've been on one VERY similar to Disco Dynamo at Canobie Lake Park in 2004 which spun so fast that it's cycle was no more than 1min lmao 😂. There was always a huge line for it because it spun so fast, and there was always puke at the exit. Can't imagine how fun cleaning the Disco Dynamo puke was 😂😂. Yuck! But, that type of ride usually called a Music Express is my FAV ever ride! I'm obsessed with them.

Great work!! As always! I tried to watch it during the premiere, but KZbin kept making the video stop. We can only wonder why they didn't go ahead with the galactic theme for the new section. Likely $$. Would have been incredible, although the Fantasyland as completed ended up being very classy.

This isn't the most related to the video but I just discovered your channel and would love to see you do a what happened video about the dinosaur attraction that was at the mall many years ago. I remember seeing it as a kid and loving it, and I would love to revisit what it was like again. I do know that they got rid of it because of a leak in the ceiling that damaged the dinosaur models, but a video on it would be really entertaining nonetheless!
