I bought an 1880 built farmhouse back in the early 80's. Completely restored it top to bottom. The front door was original, arch top glass with handmade three channel arched molding around the whole window. Original hardware and lots of coats of paint.I was an antique restorer, refinisher and despite people saying 'get rid of the door and get a new one' that was a flat 'no' from me. Removed the moldings around the glass, then the glass, hardware, hinges and got started. Took me a week to get every speck of paint off to reveal a beautiful solid oak door with beautiful grain. Gave it three coats of Devoe Wonder Wood sealer because that stuff is amazing, it cures but never gets brittle or hard like some other finishes. Needless to say, those that said 'get a new door' couldn't believe how beautiful it was when it was restored to it's original beauty.

How true. Biggest compliment about recent home addition is the salvaged Douglas fir exterior door.

I bought and lived in a beautiful restored 1900 victorian from 2002-2006. The home was completely restored except for the original and well functioning windows. I loved that house. At any rate a decade later I saw that it was on the market and decided to duck in during an open house in February. While the home was essentially the same as I left it, something felt strangely different. That's when I discovered the current owners replaced the original windows with modern wood windows. What felt different was there was no draft. When I owned the home, the living spaces were alway "drafty" in the winter months and now all of the living spaces had a consistent temperature with no draft.

And if you buy an old home with old windows, please don't replace the old windows!
