Hi, nice video and appreciate taking the time to do a detailed one. I have a question. I just rebuilt top end of my 71 Super Bug (stock 1600). Did 15min running in. I noticed that the engine was consuming a lot of fuel during this period (no black smoke or anything), had trouble idling. But I did not worry too much of the tuning, since it's just the break in. After letting the engine cool down, I have removed the fan shroud and intake because i want to do few adjustments to the fan shroud, etc. When i removed the two intake manifolds, oh dear...there was a lot of fuel found pooled up in the intake area (inside the head). When looked down the intake from where the carb sits, the walls were wet with fuel. Still I have not touched the carb or attempted to rebuild. This car is a barn find, did fire up and ran fine before I did the re-build. I would appreciate if you could comment why the intake it getting flooded with fuel. Could it be a sticky float needle? anything else i should check for. Thanks in advance.
@SladesVWBeetle
@SladesVWBeetle 2 жыл бұрын
If the intake is getting flooded with fuel. I would first check the needle and seat. Sometimes it is not shimmed properly. Which means it will not shut off the fuel completely from entering. You might want to try that first.

Hi Slade, unless you can stabilize your gopro camera the headset moves around too much. Example is my tilt trim video for my mercury 60hp outboard. I found for me using a gopro hand clamp on a 2ft tripod puts you right over your work. The hand clamp is on a flexible neck to twist it anyway you want it. I quit using my headset. I guess the newer gopro has a stability feature so it may work better with a headset?

Yes you’re absolutely right. I need to order the big accessory kit that comes with everything since it has so many different options. For what I did there, I would’ve used a harness, attached to my chest and it could have done a nice job watching exactly what I was doing.

As far as the Chem dip I use it mainly on old carbs that haven't been touched in years. My carbs that I clean more often I just use carb clean. Chem dip really cleans the carb bodies like new. If your going to be cleaning allot of carbs and metal parts in the future the larger ultasonic cleaner is great so you can clean more parts at the same time. You can also use your own mix of solutions that you like in it as well. I'm just a part timer on this stuff so carb clean and Chem dip now and then works for me
@SladesVWBeetle

I actually was going to purchase an ultrasonic cleaner. My buddy has one, and offered to let me use it. But I really don’t like boring stuff like that, my luck it would break. I have about five carburetors here that I’ve been sitting for a very long time. So I figure the chem dip will come in handy to soak them all.

Great video!!! My girlfriend has a 73 super beetle. I'm somewhat handy and it's been running terrible. I cleaned the plugs and checked the points. She's a snowbird and left the bug garaged in Northeastern NY for months at a time so i figured the jets in the carb were blocked. I watched your video a few times and ordered the rebuild kit. I did not use the chem dip but used carb cleaner instead and sprayed the heck out of it. Put it back together and is running so much better. The idle is a little high so I'll have to play with that another time. Thank you for your help!!!

I've seen Seafoam do wonders for carbs that are having intermittent issues.

Honestly I agree, I’ve had a lot of luck with seafoam. I had to pick a beetle up about 10 years ago. It had been sitting for a couple of years and was being cranky and smelled horrible, while running. Well it barely ran. I poured some seafoam in and let it soak and drove it over an hour home with no issue. Sure wish I was on KZbin then. Would have made for a fun video lol

@@SladesVWBeetle it does wonders for all sorts of issues. Honda Goldwings have starter issues and it will unstick one. I've also seen it break loose stuck pistons.

@@randall1959 I should grab a can of mystery when I’m out next time. I have an old dual port engine here that’s frozen. I really have no idea how long it has been sitting. Would be fun to see if it would loosen the cylinders up. And possibly make it run. Lol probably a good video 😂

Thanks Jimbo! I have to replace the fuel line, but it’s okay. Now the system will be new from the tank to the carb. Just slowed me down. 😁 Thanks for being here, I truly appreciate it!

Thank you so much for being here. The jetting would be according to your area. I know in my area for example on a 34 pict carburetor. I have to run a 60 idle and 130 main due to the ethanol.

I wish I could buy that Chemdip stuff here. I might get a medium sized ultrasonic cleaner instead. I have some carbies to clean and want to do a thorough job. Huh. All these years and I never knew the taillight screw fits into the ball bearing screw in the float. Thanks man, that’s a huge VWlife hack!

You can’t order through amazon for the chem dip? Do you have access to pinesol? Honestly does a good job too! I’m gonna buy an ultra sonic cleaner and do a video on it. I’ve been wanting one! Glad the video helps others. Yup the twilight screw threads right in! Thanks for being here!
