Been chasing my tail trying to figure why the hell my engine kept bogging on acceleration the point of shutting down. Runs perfect at idle. When I bought, I never noticed the heat risers were absent. It started and drove decently so I bought it and shipped it to Hawaii. I have replaced clutch, pistons, carb, distributor, alternator, fuel pump first to electric, now back to mechanical. I had heat risers from another manifold I'm no longer using and going to attempt to mate them to existing German dual port manifold. Icing at carb base happens even here in the tropics, I believe this has to be my issue, just dreading taking apart , AGAIN! I have to say I am so appreciative your channel exists along with many other helpful vw content creators!, Thanks Slade!

way back in '82, first year i owned my 73, i was heading home from work on a humid summer afternoon and out in the middle of traffic while waiting for a light to change, engine choked up. towed it to dealer. they get to it next day and say nothing is wrong. (IDIOTS!) 39 years of educating myself and i know that i got nailed with intake manifold icing. my solution was dual weber ict 34 carbs! oh, and the compressor coming on brings on a grumpy cat appearance. heehee. look at all that rust and crap comin out of there. enjoyed the vid. i had been in the garage working on my zuki. heading to the lake now to try and catch a fish.

Oh I love the dual webers 34s! That’s half the problem really damn fast. I have them on my 72 and that’s probably what I will have on the 68 to be honest with you. They warm up nicely, and wakes the motor up.

Great video! My mechanic did this to my intake for my 1971 beetle. He was not satisfied, so he got the tubes Hot with a torch rosebud and then shot oxygen in the tube. What a smoky mess! I had to have the tubes replaced because of leaks. Very important to have this clean running a single carb!

I did this a couple of weeks ago! It was plugged shut with sot... Amazing how much stuff that comes out of those heatrisers. Now the carb/engine works a lot better! Great video! Congrats on the 3000 subs!

I like the cable cleaning idea. Mine blew out some pretty bad black sooty mess when I did it last year. The evaporust worked great on my rusted lug nuts. Really good information on the channel!

I did this before. Was painting all my tins and changing gaskets. Someone told me about the carb build up so i had it all a part and said what the heck, might as well. So much carb build up came out. I didnt have any performance issues but im sure if i didnt do it i would have eventually.

Thanks for the very informative video its a job ime going to do ,.ive spent ages trying to fix the flat spot and bogging out on take up . it came to me when i noticed ice just below the carb . I could over come the flat spot by slacking off the jet next to the idle jet a touch but the engine overfueld on cruse not a good cure if you want to save your engine . great videos keep em coming a the best from the united kingdom

As the days get colder and wetter (west coast of Canada) the beetle was running rougher and stalling out. I was told it was icing. The other overlooked issue is cheap exhausts that have heater riser flanges but are pressure fed on both sides! I was too chicken to use this method and just soaked the whole thing in Deox-C which is kinda the UK equivalent of evaporust. Congrats on 3k subs, you've worked hard for it :)

Yes you’re absolutely right about the cheap exhaust. Soaking them can help too. And if you don’t want to use a drill, you can definitely hand feed a cable through there at least to get the loose stuff off. Thank you so much I truly appreciate the kind words.

Mine was so rock solid clogged I had to replace the intake. I bought the aftermarket version from jbugs. I'm in process of installing now. Not complicated, but requires some trimming, etc to fit it to engine. I found very little info on how to do it. I think you could make a great video on how to install it properly if you felt like it. I am cleaning my second single port intake manifold at y try is time using the drill-cable technique but afterward I will be using Evapo-Rust and let it sit for a few days to get rid of the rust as well as the carbon deposits. I figure using both methods could yield a more complete cleaning of the heater channel getting rid of both carbon deposits and the inevitable rust. Will let you know how it turns out. Excellent video thanks for the information. Just be cautious of the that dust coming from the heater riser. Since all these engines are before the end of Leaded gas (January 1, 1996) you really don't want to breathe any of that dust.

I had carburetor icing on a baja I used to have, mine was leaking at the gaskets, I doubled up the gaskets (used two on each riser) and it fixed my problem. Just another thing that can cause icing.

The heat is for the manifold, not the carburettor. It helps to vaporize the fuel instead of condensing and freezing. Water cooled manifolds are the same, heated. If you live in Phoenix you know that you will get boiling fuel, flooding etc if carb gets hot. On my baja the engine hangs out in the open so you dont even have a warm engine compartment. In winter I had to wrap the manifold below the carb with heat tape and digital controller and definitely need hot air air cleaner. The cable method probably wont work if it is completely plugged.

It's the latent heat of vaporization. This is exactly how your AC works, too. You are taking a liquid and vaporizing it... or at least emulsifying it. In the case of some carbs you need heat from somewhere else to combat the cooling effect.

Regarding the dust, perhaps you could place a paper bag (or something) over the opposite end of the tube to catch the dust as you blow it out???

I’ve used this method several times over the years and it works, but sometimes the carbon buildup is so severe that it can take hours of drilling to get it through. I like how you bend the end of the cable to get more action. I’ll try that next time.

Hahaha yep makes sense...I had a brand new chinese 34 pict sngle carb on my buggy at first...it ran like crap, soot, dead spot, the carb was cold, dripping condensation excessively, and probably internally freezing...I just put on some duals and forgot about it...later, I had my intake with the risers stored, went to move it and it dropped and fell on the floor....all this crap came out of it 😬😬😵...that was totally why it performed so poorly. When I get a chance, I will re-use it on another project, after proper cleaning...

I also already bought a new one for my 66 beetle before seeing your video. The old one was poorly welded on one of the riser tube and leaked besides being clogged. The fuel portion had a number of pin holes. Probably the original manifold. A little off topic but it was a bear to get the new one to fit. I was finally able to get the intake to connect to the cylinder heads. But, both heat riser tubes screw holes are off by half the distance of the hole diameter(3/16-1/4"). I was told by the dealer to give it a try bending the tubes. Not so easy. Sort of a afraid that I might crack something using force. Have you ever run into this sort of problem? If I try bending the intake off the engine that will probably mean lot of installs/removals trial and errors. Advice?

My bug has been my daily driver for 15 years, only approx 4,000 miles per year and I have had to do this horrible job twice but with some carb icing signs now it looks like a third time is coming up, I might just buy a new manifold as I hate doing this so bad!

This might explain how after I tuned my carb with a tach it still smells slightly like unburnt fuel. I'll have to do this, I always thought it was kinda odd how cold my carb would be. Only carbureted vehicle I've ever had and I just thought it was a carb thing.

Yes, definitely check into it. If your carburetor is cold to the touch after it supposedly should be warmed up. Make sure to do this, and you will be surprised at the difference. Thank you for watching and being here.

@@SladesVWBeetle That might be something I pay for, from struts to ball joins, the whole front end needs redone. Every bushing is torn and hard and the car pulls hard to the right if I let go of the wheel. It's really nice I have no shimmy though. I'm fairly close to several aircooled shops who worked on the car before and they do good work for not a whole lot of money. I'm lucky enough to be a younger person with a good paying job too, so I can afford some external work occasionally. Still, the confidence videos like these inspire does make me almost want to tackle stuff like engine dropping to replace the rear main seal and oil cooler seals that I know are bad.

I’m sure If they’re in a very warm climate, it might be OK. They are definitely on there to keep that carburetor warm.

Removing it would harm gas mileage, due to poor vaporization of fuel. Carb might need to be rich to get it to run ok. Excess fuel would dilute the oil. Liquid fuel doesn’t burn well. Engine life would be shorter. Dual carbs don’t need it but with central carbs it’s a must.

Great tutorial. Like you mention must have some sort of respiratory protection. Take it from someone who never thought much of it, and now suffering lung fibrosis. So if it’s going airborne you don’t want to breathe it. If you smell it, you’ve already inhaled it. But great demo! .(0\_!_/0).

Pretty much any type of cable, it’s just convenient to use it if you have it on hand. I would check a hardware store they usually have many similar items on hand.

Hey brotha, I cleaned the heat riser thoroughly but I'm still having issues. I'm running a 1600 Single port with a 28 pict 1 carb. Gaskets are in and bolted down but she idles rough. After awhile ice still forms right under the carb. Any tips?

WTH?? That’s really weird. Are you sure the cable went through and came out the other end brother? And did you bend the cable slightly so it did a sweeping motion? I hope that made sense.

@@SladesVWBeetle Yes sir, I did every bit to make sure she was clean and she also came out the other end of the heat riser. Theres a couple other issues I have to address but I think I know what the problem is. I still haven't gotten the car to full temp so it may change my results. 🤙🏻
