FINALLY!! I literally have been waiting for the right lighting conditions that might make a viable video on this topic possible. Threading diagrams for sewing machines can be challenging to read whether its for upper threading or lower/bobbin case threading. Here I demonstrate how to thread a White Rotary Sewing Machine Model 77. This thread path should generally apply for most other Rotary machines that were produced by the White Co. of this machine design type and could include (with a few variations on thread path) machines under the names: Kenmore Rotary, Domestic Rotary, Franklin Rotary, and Dressmaster Rotary.

You hope it was helpful? You have no idea! You are the best sir! Got a 77 that folds down into table from mother who got it from her grandmother i believe. Took it because I'm short and I can never find jeans that fit (34/28 or 29). Learned how to hem pants on sisters cheap sewing machine and always had trouble at seams so am hoping this machine will make it much easier. It;s in fabulous shape so when I watched a vid of yours you mentioned it can sew thru 3/4 layers of leather and how good it was I got super excited! Also got a bunch of accessories made by Greist or Creist (3 Hemmers, 5 stitch Ruffler, a Binder, a narrow Hemmer) and 2 others that don't have the names on them but look very technical. Keep up the amazing videos. Your great! Thank you so much!

I'm so glad to have found your tutorial! I inherited my mother-in-law's machine and even with the original manual, I couldn't for the life of me figure out the the business around the tension disk. This machine is going to be a challenge: I also have at least 6 different feet, each for different functions. I've subscribed, because I'm pretty sure I've got a lot to learn.

I learned to sew on a circa 1952 White with the black crinkle finish, a knee lever, and in a cabinet that folded open to use. I don't know whatever happened to it, but I wish I had it now! Many sewing machines from that era are "Frankensteinian" mashups of parts on hand.

FYI on the older rotary machines, the thread actually does go through the tensioner from the right side. The assembly is reversed. I had to pull out my machine to confirm because I panicked when you said come in from the left! Sure enough, the older machine is backwards. For reference, mine is a White "Dressmaster" 127 rotary. Fantastic machine.

Ah, great that you caught that. White produced lots of these Rotary models and some under various names and specs depending on the customer whether it was Sears or another retailer. And yes, they are some of the most amazing (and underappreciated) vintage machines you can buy. They often go for much less than Singers do and the rotary style straight stitch they make is one of the finest and I would put it right up there with the Singer rotary models such as the Featherweight 221 and 201. Under my "MOTOR SERIES" of videos, I made one showing how beautifully simple it is to access and service the motors they used. Rotary models such as yours are incredible bargains.

I have the same question a previous poster, Jose Menjivar. Have some type of slight tension switch on side of machine along with the knob on front. The switch raises and lowers the spring. Machine is new to me and unfortunately didn't include a manual. Haven't had chance to test run the machine to see if there is any discernible difference with the settings.

Found the answer! Typical stitch setting is S. Zig-zag attachment, move switch to Z. For Ruffler or Shirring foot use *. M is for decorative stitching.

Oddly, my comment about missing a step in threading seems to have been deleted. There is a notch in the upper part of the tension disk area that the thread hooks into after you catch the check spring (and before the take up lever). This keeps the thread securely in between the tension disks and should not be skipped.
@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Rick and thank you for your comment. I am not sure how your comment was deleted since I should be the only person with access to editing my channel, but it was not intentional. I will be doing more work on this machine and will go back and double check the threading to be sure that I catch all of the threading points. If I miss any, I'm sure the machine will let me know. Sewing machines are particular about their thread paths and as I'm sure you know, they don't tolerate missed thread points/guides. Thank you for re-commenting as I find all comments helpful.

Wrong. According to the book, at the point that you say you caught the check spring but you haven't really. The book says at that point to pull up and push the thread to the back or away from you if you are in front of the machine. Then the thread will actually catch in a small groove about a half inch above the check spring and go into the loop of the check spring. Then you will see the spring works in its full motion. The way you have it, it barley moves. Hope this helps someone.
@46Bobbie
@46Bobbie 5 ай бұрын
Sorry to be so blunt at the start of my comment. I dod it so that it would catch the eye of others. A machine will sew without the check spring working properly but only of you adjust the tension very tight. And still it won't work great but it can get by in a pinch. I thank you very much for the videos you make so dont let it discourage you that you didn't get this one thing quite right. You make great videos. Keep up the good work.

If you still need to find a manual, go to singer.com (Singer and White are now owned by the same company), go to the "support and manuals" section, and search by typing w followed by the first three digits of the model number (can usually be found on a metal plate at the base of the machine, not the model number on the motor) For instance, when I found my manual I typed in w127 and found it. Hope this helps.

Hello Patricia. I checked the online PDF version of this machine's manual. On page 47, it states: "Set the machine for a short stitch. Release the pressure on the presser bar, turn the top knurled section of the presser bar cap (pressure release) Fig. 7, Page 9, one quarter turn counter-clockwise. Hold the fabric taut, or insert in embroidery hoops, and pull forward then backward, then from side to side until the hole is completely filled. When darning is completed, push down on the pressure release until it meets the lower section of the cap, then give the top one quarter turn clockwise, locking the cap securely." NOTE: I have not attempted free motion/darning work on one of these. This technique of setting the stitch length regulator to the shortest setting is an approach that some people have used on machines such as this model that did not have a built in mechanism to lower the feed dogs. I have not seen any cover plates for these which is one way that Singers could be darned on (early Singer models that also had no feed dog release).

NOTE: Be sure to ask the seller if the bobbin case , plate etc. fit your specific model. Its very likely that the White company built your machine along with the Kenmores, but the bobbin cases can vary.

Hi there Esta. Yes, due to the high production numbers of these machines over the years, you can get brand new reproduction cords for MOST of these. It will depend on whether you have a foot pedal or knee pedal. You can find these online at a number of sewing parts retailers. I get many of my parts here: sew-classic.com

Vintage Sewing Machine Garage , Hi again. I have a knee pedal and it is attached to the inside of the sewing desk. I will spending sometime this weekend in trying to do some cleaning in it and Loki g it over more closely to see what really needs to be done to get this beauty restored. I have to say this is a sewing machine that I am actually excited about using! So I would like to know if the knee pedal can be chanced out for a foot one? Do you have to stick to white only replacements?
@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Esta. Yes, these can be converted. You will need to order a new replacement cord and have someone wire it for you. You might take it to a Sew-Vac center and see if they can wire a new cord to a pedal. They might not stock the cords but they are available online and are not very costly. Good luck with your machine!

Hello Dwight. It is tough to know without seeing the machine, but check to see if you have recently installed a new needle or installed a new bobbin or new thread up top. These are common times when issues can crop up. Also, check to be sure you have threaded the machine. I mention these things since even one of them being off can create stitch forming issues though there could be other causes.
