Rotary sewing machines made by the White Sewing machine company along with many other brands such as:
Kenmore Rotary, Franklin Rotary, Dressmaster Rotary, and White Rotary. These machines were primary competitors to Singer and used a Friction Pulley Drive for transferring power from the motor to the sewing machine. Many of these can dry rot over the years or more commonly develop "bald spots" due to pressure on the rubber surface over long periods of non-use.
The good news is that reproduction replacements are readily available online for very little. Replacement involves a simple procedure of removing the old pulley and replacing with one of 2 sizes depending on which your machine has. You may need an Allen wrench or hex key in small size in order to attach.

Thank you for these videos. I recently changed the friction dry pully. It took FOREVER to get it off, even though I used WD40. It was a STRUGGLE ! AFTER it was off, I RE-listened to your video. You mentioned waiting overnight before pulling it off. Since I'm a senior citizen, I probably won't need to replace it again. But for other ladies watching your videos, please EMPHASIZE that the WD 40 needs to sit OVERNIGHT...( AND that it may be much harder for a lady to pull it off than for a man to). I had to use all manner of tools to pry it off, including PRAYER. I'm glad you showed more than one way to screw in the little screw ( I used an eyeglass repair kit screwdriver). Keep posting these videos. They help .

Thank you for sharing these ideas Andrea. Yes, it can really make a difference if Penetrants such as WD40 or other brands are allowed to sit overnight. Actually, I may have mentioned this in a video I did several years ago when I had to soak a Singer 185J for over 2 weeks (maybe 3?) to get it to loosen up, but its a great idea to repeat this approach so thank you and its exciting to hear that you managed to get yours replaced!!

I have had a Kenmore Rotary for years, so there's nothing new about it, really, but I was given it with the understanding that it needs refurbishing. Hi Karyn. I would not doubt that Eatons would have carried a version of this machine. I know that later Eaton machines were made by Brother. But for your model, I don't know for sure. I have two White machines that have a bevel pully and I can't find a new pulley for them. One is a 1926 bronze anniversary edition. I tried the small pulley replacement and the rubber wont reach the wheel (the motor does not adjust as yours does) supplier has the same machine and states the large pulley wont work with the machine either. I have used a section of rubber hose to retrofit and it works so so. Did they actually replace the entire unit back in the day or just the rubber? Seems like they were very frugal back then maybe there are rubber parts still around?

Hi, Thanks for your great videos. I have an electric White #8 with 1848186 stamped into the machined plate on the back of the base. It is electric, in a cabinet and is a shuttle rather than rotary style. It is glossy black with gold decals, rather than matt finish. It has the friction drive like the one in your video, but the friction wheel is elongated, past the rubber "tire" and the end is a belt pulley. The belt goes from there to a pulley on the bobbin winder. When you engage the winder, a rod pushes the motor back, away from the hand wheel so that the rest of the machine is disengaged while the bobbin is wound. This system is used instead of having a clutch on the hand wheel. So, my question is, where can I find a replacement friction wheel/pulley for my machine. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated :-)
@woodbourneuke
@woodbourneuke Жыл бұрын
I also have owned a White #8 with a shuttle since I was 11 years old in 1953 - Dad bought it new for me to help mend everyone's clothes as my mother was not very adept at sewing - am almost 80 now. I have always loved my sewing machine and taken good care of it. The rubber on my motor pulley looks much thinner than ones for sale on the web so it may be worn down; I have compensated for this by winding black friction tape around the rubber pulley. I can't find a matching motor pulley - mine has a hole - 5/8" and overall diameter about 1". (Looked on site that he recommended also.)The spring on the motor has perhaps stretched as well, I guess, has become loose. I didn't know this spring existed until I watched this wonderful lesson. The machine will only work if I tie a shoe lace around the motor and pull it closer to the main body which then engages the wheel to turn. The machine that this instructor shows - has the same motor number as my machine -E6354 but his motor pulley doesn't have the extension that supports the belt that winds thread on the bobbin. My motor pulley does not have a flat tire - maybe my machine just needs another spring that would hold the motor closer to the motor pulley. So I, too, wonder if such springs are still available. Can you demonstrate how to replace this spring? Learned so much watching your video!! I loved it!

@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mildred. One option for loosening it is to try one of the penetrant lubricants used for loosening old rusted and stuck bolts etc. WD-40 and others such as the 3 in 1 Penetrant I recently used on the stuck Kenmore I have might work. I would let them sit for a few days and see if the screw loosens any. Try not to over force it since stripping it will only make things worse. Also, be extra aware of how well sized your screwdriver is to the head of the screw. FYI, I use such products outdoors to avoid the smell inside my house.

You might not find the manual under the name "Carson Rotary", but if it was made by the White company, it should have very similar mechanicles/drivet rain other White-made models of that same era/design including White, Kenmore, Dressmaster, Franklin etc. For White and Kenmore, those manuals are found in many places on the web as PDFs which you can purchase for very little. First, look at the overall design and form of your Carson model and see which of the more mainstream brands such as White and Kenmore look closest and start your search there.

Sorry to hear this though the good news is that if your bobbin case is not repairable (and it might be), a vintage replacement can be found online for very little. These machines were made in VERY large numbers over many decades so at least it is not a rare part if you need a replacement. Here is a link to a site I've used in the past that sells a number of replacement parts. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html

I have one of these, a sewing machine repair had a replacement pulley, but the spring has deteriorated. How are those replaced?

Hello Wanda. The spring/motor mounts onto the body of the machine with screws. You can get replacement (vintage) either spring or whole spring with motor at places such as Ebay or Bonanza. I would try those first. Theses machines were made in large numbers for many years so, similar to Singer, vintage parts are fairly common compared with some European brands.

Would you say this machine is similar to the Montgomery ward model 30? I have my grandmothers and want to start using it but has sat for at least 20 years.... I’d love to use this series to help it get fully working again!!
@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. Your machine was made by the National Sewing Machine Co. The model 30 (AKA "The Streamliner") was in production for more than 15 years and I believe it is a vibrating shuttle type and it works with long bobbins which was a bobbin system used by many makers including Singer but was eclipsed by the Class 15 and Class 66 styles which eventually became more popular. So, yours is not the same as those Rotary models made by the White company. White had a contract with Sears and so it makes sense that National would have supplied Montgomery Ward given it was a main competitor to Sears. I have not overhauled one like yours since they are less common. National also made machines for other private labels such as Macy's. As you look for more info. on yours, I would also look for info. on National brand sewing machines as they would have had very similar models but perhaps with changes in color and trim. Machines like yours were very strong machines and you are especially fortunate that it was in your family so you have a genuine heirloom!!

Also, I would find and join sewing machine groups in Yahoo or Google and search under National Sewing Machine. If you only search under Montgomery Ward, you will find machines unrelated to yours since MW would contract out with multiple makers over the years just like Sears did.

There are a few different sizes for those pulleys. This seller carries a variety. I would contact them and ask them which one they have that might fit.

Is it the steel hand wheel itself that has these 'bumps'? Or is it the rubber friction pulley wheel that is not smooth? THAT part can be replace and they are sold online for reasonable prices.

Is there any reason TO or NOT TO use the larger one on a machine with the smaller pulley?
@retrohipster994
@retrohipster994 3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed! A larger wheel will increase the speed that the machine sews a great deal and will reduce the amount of power it has to get through heavy materials. I have not used a machine with a larger wheel on it but I would assume that either the internal gearing on the machine is higher or that the large fly wheel on the back is larger as well. (probably the later).

No, you just purchase the pulley. I show in the video how to remove the old worn pulley and replace with the new one. The shaft of the motor does not get removed. The pulley installs off and on the shaft.

@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Belinda. They make new reproductions for these friction pulley tires. There are two sizes that I know of so be sure to check which one matches the one you have. There should be several online sources, but this site does have a good selection of Rotary parts both vintage and new. Here is a link to the page of that site that I am getting mine from when I have one of these models to overhaul. If you scroll down on this page, you should find items #8 and #9 are the two versions they sell. If you have questions, the owner should respond. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html

Some Elna machines also use friction pulleys, but those are tapered, which makes a replacement part a little more difficult to find and much more expensive. I personally never tried that, but some people have reported good results after sanding the worn pulley with a small flat file while the motor is turning.
@VintageSewingMachineGarage
@VintageSewingMachineGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have seen people try to whittle down the rubber wheels to remove the flat spot. But it would depend on whether the base rubber was still stable enough to do this (if its dry rotted, I would replace it). The other challenge can be getting it even when you are shaving it down. Any variation in its round shape could cause vibration and/or issues in performance.
@randyjohnson5651
@randyjohnson5651 5 жыл бұрын
I used a small throw away finger nail file and it worked ok to get the flat tire spot removed from the rubber pulley on a white, domestic,and an elna. You slowly run the motor as you grind down the flat tire spot. For as little as the average person would use these old machines it was a much cheaper fix. Remember when not in use place a piece of fabric between the machine and the motor to hold the rubber pulley away from the hand wheel thus avoiding another flat tire.

I have a White Sewing Machine, # 77 - 193672. It is NOT a DRESSMASTER. I've had my machine over 50 years, and I LOVE it ! But I need to replace the Motor Pully. I got the screw off, but the motor pully JUST WON'T BUDGE ! I tried EVERYTHING !.. Including using a few drops of WD-40. Can you give me some tips that might work ? I'd really appreciate it.
