I remember last time I was car shopping I only had like 3 Grand to spend on a car and I saw the beautiful red Ford escort despite it's age it looked like it was in pristine condition and it was a manual which meant I would finally have a reason to learn to drive stick. I got attached. Took it to the mechanic down the block for a PPI he told me run this thing is a basket case. The dealer actually got mad at me saying shit "wEll aT tHis PrIce yoU sHoUld EXpeCt sOmE IsSueS!" Like yeah I do the car I ended up buying had some issues but when a mechanic says run you fucking run.

Came here to say that, who spent thousands of dollars on buying something but won't do mechanical inspection or won't listen to the mechanic ? Where I live you call the guy, he comes at your convenience with tools and do a thorough inspection. It saved me THOUSANDS of dollars in the last 10 years. Being dumb because you don't know, it's one kind of dumb, but being dumb WILLINGLY by refusing information right in front of your eyes, this is some special kind of dumbness.

When I was 17 and graduated, I took all of my savings and my old truck and bought myself a mitsubishi eclipse. The same day I noticed the engine knocking. I called the dealership and they said "as-is". I spent the next day or two on the internet, which was an ancient form, bit still had tons of information. Through my research I found the "implied warranty of merchantability" , printed it out and took it to them. Couple days later I got my car back with new rod bearings.

I think the closest to being screwed on a deal that I've ever experienced was while I was still a kid. My father was looking at a vehicle, I was with him and despite my age I've always been a corn nut and even back then quite a bit. We thoroughly checked over the vehicle everything seemed reasonable. The one thing that wound up causing my dad to be able to back out of the deal and get his trade-in back was from one simple thing. My dad straight up asked, before going through with the deal, if the vehicle had been in an accident the dealer rep claimed that it had not. After getting the vehicle home and into different lighting we noticed the paint on one of the rear quarter panels didn't quite match the other paint so I looked further and discovered body damage repairs. This didn't wind up having to go to court however the dealer management was willing to reverse the deal due to the potential stink that could be made over them lying to make the deal.

Bought a car in the UK in Scotland. Took a 7 hour drive, got there, it was dark and cold, the person at the dealership was very friendly, made us tea etc. We test drove it and noticed it had almost no fuel in it, the seller said they will put enough fuel in to get us to the petrol station after we bought it. Test drove it, seemed fine etc. While doing the paperwork, the seller put some video on KZbin to distract us (noticed he stamped it with "spares & repairs only" after). Right as we were pulling the car back to our driveway, noticed it was pissing out fuel. Closer look, we saw a hole in the fuel tank that was patched up with plastic bags and silicone. Funny thing was, this car had a non-standard supercharger fitted, and was worth more than the car, and more than what we paid. Joke was on him I guess. Replaced the fuel tank, removed the super charger and tripled our money.

Previous salesman here. I sold for a Nissan new and used lot. Really what you're taught is to look for what makes the perfeson feel like they got the "Best Deal". In reality, all dealerships buy their new cars from the exact same manufacturer with the exact same promos, discounts, kickback etc so as a salesman your job is to convince the person they got a good deal when its pretty much always the exact same deal for everybody anywhere. All dealerships purchase their vehicles from the manufacturer at the same price regardless of location. And, almost all of the deals that dealerships offer dont come from the dealership, they actually come from the manufacture incentives. *Side note, I do always get a kick out of the stories that people tell me about the "Great Deal" that they got. Really the only thing they got was a great salesman So what you focus on is emphaziing the features that they like, reinforce how the vehicle meets their needs, and keep the conversation to whatever pleases them. One little trick would be if a person is harping about the value of the trade in, you allow more for the trade and mark up the vehicle they're buying. Which is essentially a net zero change, but again its about what the person feels. And with new cars, the internet has taken pretty much all of the mark up out that their used to be. Our dealership along with our sister dealerships and all of the surrounding dealerships that I knew of used software that complies all used cars of the type that we're selling and matches up condition, year, features, miles etc and then spits out a price that we generally wouldn't budge from and we could show as to why with the data. Fortunatly, people would see how great our pricing was on used and their generally wouldn't be much of a roadblock there. Our pricing is generally what brought them in because it was so good. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the solid advice!! Biggest mistake most car buyers make if they don't know auto mechanics is not having a qualified mechanic give it a thorough inspection. Would rather spend a hundred bucks or so on an inspection than end up buying somebody's problem child. Always a reason why something is being sold even at low mileage as maybe they didn't keep oil in it, etc. Or that may not be the original mileage as a replacement odometer from a junkyard was installed, etc., etc.

I agree. I paid $130 for a remote internet inspection (told it is a great running car), I believe it has at least 5K of work needed. They wanted to take $1000 off the price when I emailed the report. As someone who has been recondition used cars on the service side of dealerships for the better part of a decade, this man is speaking facts. We supply inspections with all of our cars. Depending on what the vehicle is some get fully repaired, some get sold as is, but they’re presented as such. If a dealer isn’t supplying you with an inspection of the vehicle, you should be getting one done.

Sometimes men car shopping alone are pressured by more than one salesman. A few years back I was looking for a used cargo van for my courier company. I found a 2000 E250 extended cargo van at a local dealer, so I went to look at it. The first thing that turned me off was the cockpit. It was beyond filthy. What looked like years of spilled coffee and drinks in the cup holders, dirt and grime everywhere. When I mentioned the dirty cabin the salesman acted like it was no big deal: "It's a work truck, how clean does it need to be?" I told him that it was more than just a work truck, it's a place I'll spend 10-12 hours a day. He didn't seem to understand that I would want to spend my time in a clean environment. Started it up and the first thing I heard was an exhaust leak and it sounded like a manifold gasket. I checked this van out for 45 minutes. During the test drive I noticed other things that gave me the feeling that it was not going to be a dependable vehicle. The whole time the salesman, who I mostly tuned out, was telling me what a great van it was and how it would be perfect for me. As I was walking to me car after telling the salesman I wanted to think about it the sales manager stopped me and tried to pressure me into buying it right then. I resisted his charms and drove away. A few weeks later, after I'd already purchased newer, better van the first salesman called me. He told me that the dirty van was ready for me. They had cleaned it up and fixed the manifold gasket. I went off on the guy. I said "the only reason you did that was because no one wanted that van because it was dirty and had(at least)an exhaust leak and you thought I was a sucker." Don't try to sell dirty, broken cars.

The used car industry or car sales in general gets a pretty bad wrap considering the staggering volume of units sold every day . And used is just that …… it’s a used car and no one can guess how bad or well that car has been maintained to a degree of absolute certainty that’s why they have statistics behind the extended warranty’s and for the most part about 10% margin that the car will last beyond warranty date/miles or it wouldn’t be profitable as all insurance companies underwriter’s know

Ok. Here in Calabasas California. I work in film and television. The first film I worked on was a movie called Suckers, and it was about the car industry. We filmed it at the old Galpin Ford in Chatsworth. Back then I was just a PA. However with all the pre production research that we did on the car industry and interviewing about 60 car salesman Car Finance managers and porters we heard some stories. I have learned over the years that seasoned car salesmen have the best advice.

I live in PA where we have annual safety inspection. I've gotten people's money back for junk cars because these junk cars have brand new inspection stickers. There is no way in hell these cars should have passed and held it as leverage to get the dealer to buy it back. Edit: when a inspection facility in these cases the dealership passes a vehicle that should not have passed the committed a crime. The penalty is most cases would cost 10x the cost of the vehicle.

So much great advice! Sadly, so true about sexism in car-shopping and repair; I'm a car saleswoman and have gotten some if I don't tell a shop that I sell cars. I'm happy to see customers closely inspecting a car or asking to take it to a mechanic, sadly only 3 PPIs in almost 9 years selling cars! Doing your homework and due diligence will save you a lot of money, time, and pain- I've heard enough customer horror stories to know this.

You buy a brand new car and drive it home your now driving a used car, if you're buying a used car always buy the manufacturer warranty. I bought a used Ford Aerostar at the dealership I pulled the transmission dipstick and I could tell the transmission was about to go out the price was right on the van so I also purchased a warranty and got in the deal for the dealership to service the transmission. Which changing the fluid caused the transmission to fail so I got the warranty to put a new transmission in the van before I even took delivery of it.

Here in Brazil some dealers says that the used car has only engine and transmission warranty. Standard issues are standard issues - ball joints worn out, that kind of thing is all the same on anything. Model-specific issues are why you do basic research before buying that car that you really really want, and any major forum for that make/model should be able to provide basic guidance on what to look for specific to that car. CarMax offers 24-hour test drives, a 30-day return policy, and 90-day limited warranty. I took advantage of the test drive period to have my neighbor mechanic inspect the car for any obvious problems. After purchasing the car, I took my car to the dealership for another inspection (which was free). They identified a small oil leak, which CarMax fixed for free under warranty. After I pick up my car, I’m planning to do another inspection at an independent shop before my 30-day return window ends. CarMax charges a premium for used cars, but you best believe Ima take advantage of that warranty.

Steve, although I have been retired from the car business since 2002, I do seem to recall that in Pennsylvania, all cars sold used were said to have a Warranty of Merchantability unless sold as scrap or salvage. The simplest explanation I heard of this was that a consumer had a reasonable expectation that cars had engines, transmissions, brakes, a steering system, and so forth. They didn't have to be in great shape, but they had to be present, at least. Disclaimer: I possess no legal background, and this could be pixie dust.... I ( and the various dealers I worked for )never got sued over a used car purchase. Oddly, whenever a new car lemon law situation arose, EVERYBODY got sued! The manufacturers, the dealer, probably the guy who washed it for delivery, me, the service manager, you name it.
