My great-grandparents were bootleggers here in Tennessee. My grandpa told me stories about being a kid in the back of their Mercury running from the cops. His parents had a hole cut in the floorboard in the back and they would have my grandpa pour out the liquor through the hole while the cops were chasing them! I thought he was telling tall tales but my dad told me he was telling the truth 100%!

Had the same thing happen with about a 98 Camry. I was driving a 2016 BMW 550i back to Chicago that I had just flew in to purchase from outside St Louis. On the return drive I would open her up for stretches to around 100mph depending on traffic. On one of these stretches this irritating Camry started started running with me. I would try to get rid of it but couldn’t. Of course I could out accelerate it but didn’t wanna risk getting a reckless driving ticket maintaining 120mph + for an extended period to do so. I would run up to 130mph+ and have to slow down for traffic or minimize my risk of a ticket and the Camry would be right back on my bumper. Like them, this went on for about an hour until I could finally get away for good.

@@jruerph where I'm from (SE Europe) if you're driving faster, above the speed limit but say around 100mph on sunny day and neigh-empty highway people who were up to that moment regardless of car doing 70-80 will glue to your ass with the idea that if there's a cop only you get ticketed. If you move over they'll move over if you return to the left to continue they will continue tailgating. I hate this - had S-line Audis and 20-year old Nissans do this Which is idiotic since in low traffic and good conditions you can cruise the highway at 100-110 without any risk or endangerment.

I like the fact that Doug is describing driving over 100mph and then he complains that the other cars are racing him and that's dangerous. That's the pot calling the kettle black. But if I'm on the interstate and another person is speeding, I will absolutely pace them out because let them get the ticket. I'm not racing, I'm just taking advantage of the other person's stupidity.

@clifbradley
@clifbradley 3 жыл бұрын
@@JK-js2td Sometimes there is too much car and not enough driver. Other times, there is too much driver and not enough car. Then there is that perfect blend of man and machine. That point you become a driver. Once you become a driver, you are in the zone. But I never said I was also driving their speed. I will pace them at 80 or 85, maybe even 90. But not 100 mph. Anyone who is a driver, a true driver, has gone over 100 and kept the needle buried in the trips. But I'm not doing it. Because even being a driver, means you must prepare for the inevitable too much car, not enough driver. And at triple digits, it comes too fast to do very much.
@JK-js2td
@JK-js2td 3 жыл бұрын
@@clifbradley Clif... ok, thanks for the followup. You are correct in that alot of drivers dont have the skillsets to react to situations that come up while driving 100+mph. Or their vehicle isnt modified to do those speeds safely. When u said you will pace those vehicles doing that speed...in my mind you were driving exactly as they were...and doing the same dangerous moves they were doing through traffic. When u clarified that you werent driving at the same speed as them i understood. However...you definitely have to watch your "6" as not all cops come from whats ahead.

Great story and congratulations. Now for the important bit. Let's have a link to those binoculars. There are a few things our presenters said that resonated with me. First, the "I wanna go fast too" person, when you pass people and they fall in behind like its a highspeed oval nascar race. It ruins the mojo. It turns that ridiculous speeding ticket into a racing ticket, and they don't know how.. they just don't. I had an orange dodge mini-van with an R taped to the back door following me. I would wrap up to 130 or so and try to lose them, and sure enough, here they are again. I finally conceded for their own good and let him pass. His wife was in the passenger seat. It appeared they had been arguing. Second, the "My car can do that too" person. Picture if you will, I'm quietly sneaking down the road in an overpriced BMW 7 wearing its sticky fat tires, feeling a bit happy about the moment. Only to have a hard right side pass by a Pontiac Grand Prix with one tiny funny tire, no license plate, and a front fender kinda flapping in the wind. It can wreck a mood to put it in possibly realistic terms. So again, I feel an obligation to slow down and squelch whatever competition they are having for their own good. It like some folks have no idea how long you crash for when you're going 100 mph. The best car I have ever owned for going much much too much faster was a white Lexus LS430. The car is virtually invisible. It is fast and, with the addition of Brembo brakes, fairly capable. Handling was not razor-sharp, so extra caution was required when passing. That rig was not going to sweep three lanes at triple digits without arguing which end was supposed to be in front.

I once drove from Huston to Dallas. In 2 hours 40 mins. In Honda Prelude from an Auction. I got behind some lady in a Cadillac. She was clipping along at 110 mph the whole way. We only stopped for gas once...I swear she was the Governors wife. Not one single cop showed up till almost to I-20.... That Honda coolant gauge was just under the overheat line...

Despite the 100mpg avg speed, their avg fuel consumption was 21.4mpg. That is remarkable, that TT flat 6 is wonderfully efficient.

I have a Audi A7 3.0tdi 320 hp, and it has pretty much the exact same fuel consumption at the same average speed! If it wasn't for the need for a back seat and trunk space I would definitely prefer to drive a 911...

Handled projects at an aerospace place. The 6'6" big boss "Steve." Combat -vet Marine SF. His 6'2" right hand man? "Steve." Combat-vet Blackhawk pilot. So I had to call them "Big & Little Ennis." Thank God we had a good relationship and they have excellent sense of humor. Relevance? I want to think that "Tiny Dancer" Tabbutt (Thank Rabbit for that) dressed as an "Ennis." One of the 1st things I demonstrated to my daughters with a GT350 is how people will try to race you or goad you into doing stupid S...took maybe a 5 minute drive

I used to drive from the west side of Houston to Gainsville quite often....and I had one time where this 'burley' looking late 40's - early 50's guy was driving a Fiat 500 in a girly light yellow color like his life depended on it.....I was driving a modded turbo something or other that made plenty of power and i would ZOOM off and leave the Fiat in the dust only to have him catch me when I got stuck in traffic...this guy must have had that thing on the floor the whole time.....rinse/repeat and this guy was like a damned bulldog....so...coming into Biloxi MS, I had goaded this guy into going faster and faster.....and there was an overpass coming and the RX65 gave a couple Ka beeps and stopped....so going up onto the overpass--which was a blind crest, I had him in the right lane going about 105 and right before we got to the point of no return, I dynamited the middle pedal and slid back over into the right lane.....Mr. Fiat flies over the crest and my RX65 goes 'BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP'....... Yeah....Mr. Fiat got popped for 100+..... this had been going on for almost 200 miles and I had to stop for gas at that next exit....I watched the Fiat get towed and Mr. Fiat get cuffed up and hauled away after quite the triad with Mr. p0-p0... OOPSIE!!

I hate to admit it, but I’m the guy in the Camry, (prius in my case sadly) but I’m not on my phone, very attentive, keep up but have some distance. If someone’s going faster I join in the line. Even if it’s a struggle to maintain 110-115mph. 😂

Everything old is new again! Back in '77ish, couldn't get Coors in Oregon (not pasteurized) so, yea our beer runs were interstate...kinda, sorta. And now the county I live in passes an ordinance banning the sale of "flavored tabaco" so it's back to smugglers blues. Drive to the next county just to get my Kools.
