Your story about the ABS malfunctioning really struck a note with me. I once owned a 97 Chevy S10. One day it was raining pretty hard, and I found out that day that it had a bit of a wiring issue, because the ABS completely stopped working. It would not let me apply the brakes at all. I pushed the pedal and all it did was push back on me. I was coming up on a 4 way intersection where I didn't have a green light when this happened so I was not in a good spot there. It's a good thing I don't freeze under pressure, so I was able to stop in time by applying the park brake, downshifting, and swerving as hard as I could without crashing into something else. Once I stopped I quickly opened the hood and unplugged the ABS module, and then it was fine, but that was definitely one of my worse almost disasters.

Nanny toys,, even happens on the road. I often feel ABS, even now is more dangerous than not. I have nearly crashed avoiding other cars a few times. Though you did the world a favor destroying one of those antisocial Mazdas! brap brap brap! Though late 90s, a brand new 3 day old racing Porker with 'racing ABS' was very lucky when it simply locked the rears alongside me and did pirouhettes. IF I had not half stuffed the previous corner I would have been alongside and at 130mph it would have been a big crash. Luckily he ended up in the gravel pit with no real damage. The fuse for the ABS was removed! Another of those overrated VW Beetles did what happened to you,, hard pedal and straight into an earth backed concrete wall. Again, racing ABS! Luckily driver was basically ok, car was taken away in a doggy bag. Leased car so it cost him a LOT of money

This reminds me of how much I hate old ABS systems. They used to be so stupid that you just have to disable them. You're stuck until maybe the mid 2000s before ABS systems might be ok. Newer stuff is vastly superior, but old ABS is scary stuff. One of my first ABS equipped cars I've ever owned I flew into the ditch at 20mph because it did exactly this. I was just on loose gravel in the middle of the summer. But, it had rear drum and front disk, and for how the hardware was configured, the system was oddly rear biased and the drums were rather prone to locking up. So on loose gravel, I apply the brakes, and nothing. I push hard, nothing. I pump, doesn't help one bit. In all I had about 15% total braking available driving all the way up to the corner and right into the ditch still going 20mph. I was attempting to slow from 40mph like 100-150 feet from the corner, and I could only bleed off 20mph that whole distance. Luckily, there was nothing there, just open ditch, so I turned and drove right back out. I promptly pulled the ABS fuse. The same trash ABS system rolled me right through an intersection because there was some sand tossed down (winter, but no ice at that spot, literally just asphalt and sand). It also drove me straight into a ditch one time, but that one was on purpose a bit. This was at a T, stopped, and I turned onto the road and kicked the back end out, planned, but I ended up angled a little too much, and ABS braking ensures you keep rolling. Beyond a certain point, if you're facing the ditch, it'll happily roll you straight into the ditch. At the time I was fiddling with ABS on ice testing it some versus no ABS for control, braking, and that was just something I was messing around with. Despite the hatred for the old systems, to the point of considering them incredibly dangers to remain enabled (they WILL make you crash at some point), modern systems are really remarkably good. The whole ABS, traction control, stability control, whole slew of sensors, etc. all make modern cars generally work very well in almost all cases. It becomes actually quite difficult to glitch a modern ABS/TC system or to work a car in a way that would cause any serious danger. A lot of modern systems are really quite ridiculous in what they can achieve.

Concussion is no joke! I once went up a dirt jump on a mountain bike, No helmet, front flipped and smashed 100% upside down face first in the concrete/gravel and shattered my skull "hey diddle didle right down the middle" like 2 halfs on a chocolate easter egg (the odd titanium plate now). As I was being put in the ambulance the female responder said "oh he's going" and I thought "what's she on about? I'm fi" and then faded to black. Woke up in hospital and they asked my name and if I knew the guys by my bed (brothers) and where I lived. They asked for my age.....I had no idea. It's quite scary when you don't know something as mundane as your own age, I was 22 but I could have been 32 for all I knew. I also forgot the day or 2 prior to that. So yeah even a single concussion can badly screw with you and many like seen in the movie "concussion" don't bear thinking about other than...be safe.

As much as I enjoy the other People on this Channel, Randy will always have a special place. He’s the one that really got me into cars and racing. Such a cool dude!

I can verify that this was a problem with the GM cars of the 90s, the same thing happened to me at Sonoma (turn 11) in a World Challenge race in 1995. The speeds there are lower (still over 100mph) but the runoff is nonexistent. I ended up on top of the pit wall, fortunately uninjured and 100% conscious. The GM teams called it "ABS Glide"....which pissed me off because it was common enough to have a name but no one had told me about it. That was a very expensive lesson.

Ha, this video is getting bookmarked for those times when people call me crazy for not trusting old ABS systems. Modern ones have improved, but 80's and 90's ABS systems are *terrifying* to me.

I know of 2 people who have crashed late model Camaros at AMP due to ice mode happening. Both at T1, the fastest part of the track. Both were fine fortunately but the cars were totaled. So it still happens even with new cars.

I was t boned by a Range Rover in my Explorer. I thank the Great Pumpkin for the side curtain air bags!!! Even if it cost me a few teeth, and my partial denture....I was glad to have it because I was knocked silly!!!

I once had an accident in a delivery van of the flower shop I was working at. I was going 35 in 35 zone, cam to the sharp curve before a stop sign, stepped on the brakes and NOTHING! Ended up in the tall grass field on the outside of the corner. I was also told "The Brakes are fine!" but I always called bullshit.

I always learn something from Randy. Pump the ABS. I actually think I've done that before in snow, no Randy needed.
