Doug grew up in Maine where it can be hard to find traditional automotive entertainment. Growing up when he wasn't up to shenanigans in an ex-cop Crown Vic, he was getting to other entertaining car-related trouble.

Maine and NH are kinda similar I guess. We jumped my friends 84 Crown Vic about 6ft in the air in a field some kid had made jumps for his atv in. Funny part was his alignment was way off before the jump, but, actually better after. Another one was on the ME/NH border trying to find the top speed of a Linc MkVII on the Spaulding Turnpike. Also passing invisible cars while holding the doors wide open and dropping out fireworks. Oh, and shoving shopping carts into the brick wall of k-mart with a car. Ofc now-a-days cops aren't as forgiving which sucks. Seriously, they need to make more interesting stuff for kid/teens to do in the somewhat rural areas of the northeast, the opiod problem would be waaaaay less.

That sounds familiar. My brother and I took my grandfather's old 53 Plymouth wagon out to a sand pit in Maine. He couldn't get a sticker on it because it was so rusty. We jumped it and the body broke loose and was dragging on the ground. It wouldn't move we just spun the tires. There happened to be a sledgehammer in the car so we beat on the windshield posts until they broke and smashed the hinges till the doors fell off. Then we drove out from under the body and did some more jumps. We left it there so grampa wouldn't see it and some asshole stole the radiator and battery from it before we went back. It turned out years later my brother in law told me a story about stealing a radiator and battery from an old abandoned Plymouth in the sand pit.

Such relatable stories living next door in NH. Although i went to the middle of ME last week for vacation and it truly is so much different. Miles of paved and dirt roads without houses or cars... What a wonderful state. So glad the white mountains offer a similar experience, however you'll never get the expansiveness and lawlessness of rural Maine.

I was surprised to find out that most of the country doesn't have any gravel to make pits in. Hell, here in Florida they don't even have top soil. Next door neighbor from up north ordered some top soil to infuse his lawn which was all sand. The nursery delivered a load of more sand.

My favorite tow truck story happened in 1974 when my parents and I were returning to Massachusetts. Pulled into a gas station in New Brunswick, NJ to refuel, and the car (1971 Pontiac Catalina wagon) wouldn't start afterwards. Called AAA, tow truck shows up and hooks on. On the way to the garage (which was on the other side of New Brunswick), the tow truck gets a flat tire. So, the driver pulls off the highway - there was a wide grass shoulder - calls his dispatcher, and then drops our car off the hook. Shortly thereafter, a second tow truck shows up. But instead of hooking on to us, the second driver drops a spare tire off the back of his truck and leaves. We eventually made it to the garage, who diagnosed the problem as a bad starter. This being a Sunday, it was fortunate the garage had a replacement starter in stock. Finally made it home about four hours later than the trip normally would have taken.

I grew up in Portland(that's the city for maine folk) and even we had a rock quarry with a 200ft drop with a gravel track around it over a landfill! It's a dog park and solar panels now, but back in the 90's we just took subarus and scouts out there and drove them off the cliff or blew them up when we were done beating them. You could always find something too rusted to pass inspection anymore for a few hundred to trash.

The one tow company I worked for did all the police towing in a city. You were almost guaranteed to see a cop on one of your calls every shift. One of the other tower goes to a police call. The car needed to be fingerprinted, so off they went to the facility where that happens, while the driver was unloading the car the cop was watching and noticed the driver was staggering around, so concerned the cop goes to make sure the driver was OK. The next thing you know is I am dispatched a call for the building where this was happening for a ford F450. I get there only to find the driver in the back of the cruiser and me I'm pointing one of our own tow trucks! And that is how you never drive professionally again.
