Please do! I think its awesome to have stories from the wide spectrum of cars. The expensive car stories are cool, but I also think these crap cans are just as wonderful. I knew the $500 car thing was BS at my first Lemons in Toledo, OH. Our team was 5 guys from Minnesota and me from Ohio in a Saab 9-3 named Team Cougar Bait. Parked next to us in the pits was the Pratt and Miller Corvette racing pit crew. They literally had a machine shop in their trailer! But it was OK because about 45 minutes into the race our first driver got turned into the wall, smashing the right front in pretty well. We worked on that car for probably 5 hours, getting help from the Pratt & Miller crew and even using my van to yank on the subframe. But we could only make enough room for an intercooler for the turbo, or a radiator. For obvious reasons we ran the radiator. Overnight it wasn't bad, but as soon as the sun came up and the heat and humidity built up our engine got too hot. We parked it, but got back on track with about 15 minutes to go so we could say we finished. We ended up winning the trophy for "Most Heroic Comeback". This was in 08, and during the trophy ceremony a massive storm blew in, the remnants of a Hurricane Ike, that did a lot of damage in western Ohio. I was driving south on I-75 and the headwinds were so strong that my van kicked out of overdrive to maintain 75mph. Also, Jay is 100% correct about Nelson Ledges. You WILL accelerate if you go off track and god help you if the grass is wet!

It's not entirely BS. If you want to actually compete for purse or points, the rules very much apply. It's only if you're obviously there for S&G's and your car has little chance of being competitive that they don't care.

@@TheCorrectionist1984 There has been only 2 instances of this happening since the creation of Lemons. First time was this Merc that the contestants begged to have it taken away because they live in SF with no place to store it. And for the other time, they claimed the engine in a Camero, which was a super cheaty "305 small block", that they apparently got for "free from a customer". Though the engine was never actually taken. The team did this to avert attention from their other car, which was a 3rd gen turbo Supra that had won Lemons before. The claiming rule is there to scare cheaters away and keep the cars in "Lemons spirit". Not to punish competitive teams.

Anyone here after ChrisFix's video about his lemon BMW racecar? Im so down for this type of races, litterally you don't care if you win or not or heck even get to the finish line in one piece. You just do it because its fun. We have something similar in my country called GrutaRally (junk rally) which is basically bunch of people taking old beaters and modifying them in order to not race but drive em through some hard enviourments to see if they finish. You don't get any money out of it or anything similar but the pure fun of building your own beater car to see if it can pass the test pretty much. And the same rules apply there, a running car with MOT no more than 500$ just for the car itself (I think modifying it is allowed however you want), they make exceptions but this is just for pure fun, even if you do have an advantage over somebody else nobody really cares. The best thing about it is that you get to drive your old beater all the way home if it really makes it through the course. Honestly you can just have blast with your friends for 3 days doing litterally nothing but trying to run your car through the desert, then take it back home to sit another year without moving til the next event.

there is 1 rule he left out in the intro: it's not exactly that the cost of the car you run needs to be $500, it's that it can put you a max of $500 in the hole (not counting labor): practically speaking this means that you are allowed to sell anything you take out of the car in the process of working on it and add that to your budget, and you take a *LOT* out of these cars just trying to make them safe to race let alone dropping weight and replacing stuff. with how car values work the parts in a brand new still on the lot car are going to price out at considerably more than the value of the car, let alone the moment someone actually buys it and suddenly it's estimated value looses a zero. so if you buy a junker for 500 bucks with something specific wrong that totals it but an active market and good value on it's parts then strip most of the stuff off of it you might end up with a budget of a few thousand after selling the parts off individually. conversely these things don't have to be remotely street legal so you are free to make the most gloriously ghettotastic solutions to engineering problems you can think of so these things might look a lot more expensive than they actually are and have half the motor made from scrap metal discarded kitchen appliances and leftover beer cans, if your car isn't at least partially made from scrap metal and dumpster diving you're probably doing it wrong. oh! and things can be even sketchier than you'd think because your' repairs budget isn't capped at 500, you just need to get whatever you are putting back in there when you fix stuff approved as not putting you over limit in the car itself.

Saw this, and now a few of my buddies at college are scrambling trying to build a car. Bought a 2008 saturn aura for $75. Hail totaled,motor is blown, not a bad car. Welding shop is getting us a roll cage for $200, and we got an LS1 for another $150, and now we are trying to fit it in with what parts we have with $75 left in the budget.
@harveyknguyen

the $500 only goes towards the car itself, the roll cage and other equipment aren't included in that allowance

To recap it all. You have a budget of $500, however, if you want to race something quirky and are only racing for fun you can spend as much as you like.

Nah. My buddy runs one of the larger motorcycle racing clubs and I talked to him about track costs and insurance. I can't imagine insurance costs being less for motorcycles compared to cars. I'm fully ready to be proved wrong about the Lemons being too expensive, I would like to see some numbers is all.

That's what it costs to go racing. Track rental, insurance, staff, oil dry, etc it adds up very fast. Looking at other series like AER and Champ Car the pricing is essentially the same.

@@jakeb92980 there is a big difference between insurance on a motorcycle run group with maybe 25 bikes vs 120 cars on the track at the same time, with huge speed differentials too.
