The Vinyl Oddities series will eventually return but not for a while. Still let me know what records you want to see featured in future parts! I'm specifically looking for records with interesting backstories, not so much super gimmicky releases.

When Gibby Haynes put out a super-limited (50 copies) single on Third Man Records that was pressed/engraved onto old X-ray film (like the Russian records another commenter posted about), Butthole Surfers fans got organized to try to help each other get copies on the one day and from the two record stores where they could be gotten on a one-per-person basis. One guy actually was walking to his mailbox to wait for the copy another fan had managed to get him for around $80 -- copies were already going for $500 on eBay within days -- only to stare in horror as the postman folded the package, snapping the brittle disc in half as he prepared to shove it into the box! This is subtle but hilarious: When the Damned came out with their Grimly Fiendish, completists would have to get the album "Phantasmagoria", the regular 45, the gatefold 45, the limited autographed 45, the regular 12" single, the white vinyl 12" single... and finally, one more 12"remix single. When the now broke fan played the last one, as the song faded out at the end they were greeted with the "cha-CHING!" sound of a cash register as the band gleefully took the last of their money! FWIW, if I ever get to release my 4-record set of songs I recorded with Daniel Johnston (w/cameos by other guest stars inc. Beck, Tenacious D and members of the Go-Gos, Damned, Asleep at the Wheel, Tin Machine, Fastball, Sublime, Monkees, etc) my plan is to have stackable 7", 10" & 12" discs in clear, translucent color and white vinyl which when arranged properly will form a big bloodshot eye, enclosed in a cardstock foldout to complete Daniel's trademark winged eyeball. (Anybody want to help me get started on this huge undertaking?)

If you're opening things up to singles, I liked the single release of Parquet Courts' "Total Football". To go with the theme of Football (soccer), the single was released with a sticker sheet that was a parody/ homage to the Italian Panini soccer trading cards. There were stickers with portraits of the band, fittingly looking like trading cards, along with band logos, and the lyrics. There were spots on the back of the cover that you could stick the stickers, if you wanted.

I guess the first pressing of The Marshall Suite by The Fall might qualify? First off, it's a three-sided double LP, no grooves or etching on the fourth side, just smooth vinyl. Secondly, it was recorded after the infamous NYC gig which saw Mark E. Smith lose every single member of the band, including second-longest serving bassist Steve Hanley, apart from Julia Adamson, who pressed assault charges against Smith, which saw him literally escaping being chucked in Riker's Island by two minutes. Miraculously, Smith found another band and recorded one of The Fall's best LP's. You could also include 1982's Hex Enduction Hour, which isn't particularly rare, but Smith insisted an hours worth of music be pressed on one disc--this was achieved by using the Teldec pressing plant in Germany, which handled a lot of classical music (it was a joint venture between Telefunken and Decca). Consequently, the first Kamera pressing doesn't EXACTLY sound fantastic!

My favorite thing about the music industry is obscure vinyls. It's so hard to find videos covering creative and interesting vinyl quirks; typically, it's just a compilation of "rare" vinyls that are otherwise not very artsy or interesting. I've been seeking videos exactly like this for years, and I've only come across a few. That's all to say, I love the subject matter.

I'm fascinated with this video series. I love everything you do, the way you do it and the fact that throughout the video you're literally a talking head talking about these very interesting topics lol... you became my new favorite youtube channel. And by the way, it's a great honor to see how you talked about one of our most respected and beloved national albums and artists from my country at minute 33:33 (Artaud - Spinetta) 💚 Keep making these videos that are fabulous... greetings from Argentina! Side note: Maybe you're interested in the album "Brain Salad Surgery" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer... Their art consists mainly of 2 exclusive works made by H. R. Giger (the creator of Alien), it opens from the middle and includes an insert/poster with the faces of the 3 members that in some editions can be placed inside the album and seen through the hole in the front cover. An album with a rather interesting design and story...

Great video. You got me hooked so well that I literally just sat here watching and listening for 40 minutes. I mean, your narration/script is so incredible! At no point did I feel like you were repeating words or sentences. Each album had a more or less "unique" introduction which is fitting for the theme of your video!! Also, curse you for making me look up the NOFX album cover. I was mentally prepared for animal gore ... I did not think "eating lamb" could be understood THAT way 😭

Would recommend looking into Soviet Bone Records - bands producing underground music during periods of heavy censorship in the Soviet Union printed their records on used X-Ray film, creating unique and interesting versions of records with images of bones from the X-rays on them.

David Bowie’s Blackstar has a hidden image on the vinyl (or cover I dont remember) which with sunlight shined on it reveals hidden art. Westside Gunn’s album Pray For Paris only has 500 copies ever made to fit in with the theming of the album being sort of an art collage.

Love the vid! If you do another, I’d recommend looking at NOFX’s other vinyl releases. Starting with Punk in Drublic, many of their albums have different versions of songs exclusive to vinyl, featuring new arrangements or lyrics. They even had an album called Coaster that was named “Frisbee” on vinyl.

Good to see Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick featured here. Another notable cover design from the band is their second album, Stand Up. Confusingly, Tull's debut album, This Was, was also the final album by the original, blues-centric line-up ... hence the title ("This was Jethro Tull"), and the second album, released just nine months later, in July 1969, proclaimed that the new line up with a more developed hard rock style had arrived, hence the title declaring "(the new) Jethro Tull stand up". The cover reflected and punned upon the title. To quote Wikipedia: "The design of the album cover started with a visit to New Haven, Connecticut, during a concert tour in late February 1969. Under the direction of producer Terry Ellis, the band met a woodcarver named James Grashow who followed them for a week in order to properly represent them in wood. The resulting gatefold album cover, in a woodcut style designed by Grashow, originally opened up like a children's pop-up book so that a cut-out of the band's personnel stood up, evoking the album's title. Stand Up won New Musical Express's award for best album artwork in 1969. The pop-up was not carried over to the 1973 album reissue, but is now available on the 180g vinyl issue of the Steven Wilson remixed version of the album, released in 2017."

You can tell the people these days reissuing the records are fans themselves, as opposed to the earlier distributors petrified of anything vaguely circular being "too risque". I love how so many of them reissue with the censored parts restored. 😄

I don't know if it was direct from him, but I once bought a tape of his which was shipped with no protection and included a rock in the mailer. Was so fucked up by the mail it wouldnt even play right. Still managed to sell it just based on the story alone, and keeping the rock and giving it to the next owner.

How about Stereotomy by The Alan Parsons Project? The cover art resembles a rorschach ink spot test and you can change how it looks using an envelope sleeve some copies came with. How this works is each side of the envelope has a dominant colour, which filters out part of the artwork

I know Daft Punk "Discovery" was already mentioned but I also think the "Alive 1997/2007" Collectors edition is super cool and would be fitting on this list. It features 4 vinyls, 1 for the 1997 tour, 2 for the 2007 tour, and an encore vinyl (I don't remember which tour it was an encore for). Along wuth that it features stickers, a photo book, a replica of the tours VIP Badges, and a nice slip mat with Daft Punks logo on it.

For Dookie, Reprise also released CDs with the original image of the Earnie puppet on the back at the same time as the vinyl press. I found a copy years ago, and as a former Green Day Mega fan, it's still a prized possession in my collection. That Katy Perry cotton candy-scented album of course came out after years of other scented LPs like Ringo Starr's "Stop and Smell the Roses" and The Damned's "Strawberries (for pigs)". And even before that there were plenty of records that just plain stunk! In any case, just because your album gets scratched doesn't mean it should be sniffed!

The cover has secret messages you can only see if you put the vinyl to the cover itself, it was limited to about 10,000 copies (i think, i might be wrong on that), and it even has backwards messages all throughout the vinyl itself, even a whole song thats backwards

there were so many people who got that blind faith album back in the day, including members of my family who grew up in that era, it's wild. meant to contribute to cool covers in the other video but i'll do so here, underrated prog rock band gentle giant has some neat covers: - octopus' us/canada release was shaped like a jar - in a glass house had a sweet lenticular cover and was never officially released in the us until the 90s - the power and the glory has another cool die cut, shaped like a playing card but of the ones I can think of, check out grin's third album, all out (they're a 70s rock band that were associated with neil young) has a big ol' smile with pearly whites with a flap that, when opened, features the album name with the teeth removed. pretty cool, and a bit gross!

Voodoo Glow Skulls &Hickey split 7" is the number 1 record for me in terms of interesting backstories Basically, Hickey got to play a show where VGS was i think headlining, they saw their fancy vans and salad bars. So they decide to do a speech on stage pretty much calling out hypocrisies in the punk community aswell as VGS as a band in which VGS responded saying that they wouldn't play unless Hickey was thrown out, and so they were.. not before one of the members of Hickey stole the trumpet of one of the members of VGS. This made VGS very pissed obviously, so them and other epitaph buddies of theirs kept trying to call Hickey and sending them voice messages saying death threats and calling them slurs (all while audibly drunk) to get their trumpet back. But during all of that Hickey records a couple songs to make a 7" which they then release as "Voodoo Glow Skulls & Hickey" which contains one track for each side. The first side plays a pretty standard Hickey jam, but the other side (being credited as VGS) is a song composed of all the voice messages VGS & co. have sent them all while their stolen trumpet is being played on top of it all. After it was released, they sent the trumpet back.. filled with snack pack chocolate pudding. Since then the lead guy of VGS has been butthurt about the release trying to take down any listenable upload of it, though one remains as of recent on youtube (not sure for how long). Also, RIP Matty Luv ❤️

Wrong, the first album to include braille was, "A Blind Man's Movie" by comedian & actor, Murray Roman back in 1968. Except for the white writing on the spine, the entire cover was black. It was a gatefold cover so, when you opened the gatefold, the entire inside was black. Then, you'd notice one of the faces inside the gatefold had a single 12 x 12 page attached to it. When you flipped the page over, both of the other two pages were completely black. On the back cover was a message in braille. I think it was the album title and artist name. I don't know if it was part of the design but, both of the labels were black with silver print instead of silver with black and blue print as most of the Tetragrammaton labels were back then.
