Great response, Mike. I had a lot of fun answering these questions too. I’ve never seen that Clash before. Remix of Combat Rock? Very cool! I have to listen to that Stones album again. Unfortunately, it didn’t thrill me the first time I sampled it. Queen! Yes!!! I showed Sheer Heart Attack for another question. Lol. The 70s! Yes!!! The variety was amazing.

Happy New Year Chris 🎉 Yes the Clash went into the studio after a world tour, recorded lots of material then Joe and Paul lost a bit of interest and Topper was out of it with drugs. So Mick Jones went back in with just an engineer and mixed the tracks trying to make it Sandinista 2, but when the band and record company hear it they didn’t like it. So the record company called in Glyn Johns (Beatles), and he effectively remixed it to a single album….Combat Rock. Rat Patrol is that Mick Jones double album. Please re-listen to Hackney Chris, I really think it’s a special album. Mike

In addition to Switched On, I have the compilation released last year, The Pulse of the Early Brain, bought that at the concert when I went. I really want to get their first EP with Superelectric. When the pop punkers showed up late 70s and said you should not listen to commerical Cock Rock garbage like the Rolling Stones and Black Sabbah methinks you were not on board with the ethos. I remember buying the 'Shot by both Sides' single, something about the 'emergy' tickled my teenage neurons. I don't have the Pistols record, it's a joke-scam LP and most people still don't seem to realise this.
@pc31thevinylpoliceman9 ай бұрын
Hi Mike and happy new year to you 🎉 No I’ve never believed the ethos was strictly serious. Just too many contradictions, from future punks attending Bruce concerts mid-70’s to bands accepting huge advances from the Incs. But I just loved the music and the performance. NMTB has so many great songs on it performed to a very non punk standard, brilliant album, and regardless of intent it’s a well produced well performed album of great songs. But this is a great discussion Mike with lots of contradictions and strong personalities involved in the whole genre. Mike
@miketomlin60409 ай бұрын
@@pc31thevinylpoliceman I'd argue the fact many/most are largely oblivious to the rebels without a cause element to it or grifting for money from the teenage record buying market of the time potentially adds to its appeal, or status. Yes the Punk bands, performers embraced a spectrum of values as did their 'fans', which was my point as to you not siding at the time, or now, with those, the minority, who saw it as a means to challenge corporate greed, consumerism and so on. You still bump into the occasional Sabbath collector who believes that band was ''anti establshment''' even after Osbournes family show, living in a mansion in the sticks, was pumped around the globe. Since I know every Tom, Dick, and Harry will be doing this thread, I probably won’t be watching a whole lot of these but you can be damn well sure I’ll watch your entry. Of course you did this brilliantly. I think you might be surprised how many people actually don’t own the Sex Pistols. Currently have it on cd, used to have it on cassette. When you say “brilliantly “ when describing Sven’s use of spreadsheets (zzzzzzz….) did you actually mean psychotic? Just wondering. Thanks for the shoutout with WAR! Getting a shoutout from you is better than being knighted by the Queen.

You are a true Gentleman Gary! Are you going to do one? You’re right there’s going to be lots but I will ‘try’ and watch as many as possible. But thanks so much, as always, for supporting me my friend!! Psychotic….😂😂 you’re being very mean about Chicago Sven’s record keeping 😂😂 Mike

It's impossible to have too much Stereolab.

I’m finding that out Nigel. I’m now 7 and counting, I’ve got Peng on the way. Great music and the big bonus for me is that my wife loves them too, so I get even more listening time. Did you see that Laetitia has a new solo album out in February? Thanks. Mike

Fandabbidozy! I've been a 'Lab fan since '93 when Peel had them in for a session. Still haven't heard much of their spin-off stuff, solo Laetitia or Cavern of Anti-matter. It's on the 'to do' list. There's just too damn much great music to delve into for one lifetime! Someone on the VC needs to do wife-friendly/wife-unfriendly lists of bands & artists. Oh & the handful of female VCers should do the same for their significance others: 'He doesn't even like Napalm Death, the big Nancy!' Etc, etc...

@@nigelelliott4901 I’ve only heard a bit of solo Laetitia and a Modern Cosmology album and a 10”, so there’s loads I need to try and get round to. I love the wife stuff, great idea! As you say so much great music to listen to, so little time! 😁 Mike

I enjoyed your responses. There’s very little I’m actually familiar with and aside from the Kinks nothing I own. But it’s a lesson to learn from your video. I’ve seen about ten of these responses now, and the score is about 7-3 with England leading over America. Though I noticed that those near 50 choose the US and those closer to 60 or older choose England. The same people who chose England also tended to choose the 70s and the ones who chose the US were more for the 80s

Many thanks for watching and commenting. That’s a really interesting observation, and yes that’s my experience of watching as well. I’ve seen a few exceptions of 50 somethings preferring England but they still go for the 80’s. So yes great observation. I think there are currently about 120 videos posted so it would be a massive job to get a full assessment, but I agree with you. Mike
