Very helpful, Brian. Great video giving good insights into the colour and protection options out there. I agree with your approach.

I kept my previous car for 18 years before selling it and buying a 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD. I hope the Tesla will last at least 10 years.

PPF isn't thicker. It's tougher. Vinyl has a bunch more layers than PPF, most of which have to do with color and don't protect in the slightest. PPF is 100% about protection, so that's what it does. PPF started out with "invisible bra" products like ClearBra long before vinyl existed. Vinyl came along when somebody realized that they could put temporary advertising on vehicles by printing designs on PPF, but it needed to have an opaque base in order to have complete control of all the colors and designs showing like they should. Since it was never intended to be a long-term product, it didn't need to be tough like PPF. So vinyl worked fine for the advertising wraps. Then people started asking to get their private vehicles wrapped in more aesthetic designs, and that's how we ended up with the current market for wraps and PPF. Because there are still lots of people who are perfectly happy with the color of their vehicle (after all, they DID specifically choose it...) and only want to protect it without any visual difference at all. That especially goes for custom paint jobs. Why would you pay many (sometimes tens of) thousands of dollars for a paint job just to cover it up? So there's room for both products, they do NOT directly compete with each other, and neither will be going away.

Vinyl over ppf as you can get 2 for 1 of the ppf price

Hmm, my MX is 8 years old , but it does not feel or drive like a used car. I think I'll keep it at least 10 more years. 👍

Dude I absolutely love that color and wouldn’t mind getting my car wrapped if you’re available. I’m picking up my 2024 Model Y Wednesday on the 17th in Ultra Red. I live in GA but I have an aunt that stays in Charlotte and she keeps bugging me to come see her😆🤣 so what an excuse to come to NC for a bit. How much would it be to wrap it in this exact color buddy?

Couple of questions: 1. You discuss DIY, but the better vinyl really can't be bought by individuals, can they? (I've tried looking.) 2. Why do some of my better local shops refuse to put on vinyl in SW FL? They say the sun/heat will make it worthless. Can't afford the PPF!!!

6k from Tesla on colored PPF. So the same price?...

The difference between vinyl and PPF is that vinyl is sacrificial, and PPF just shrugs off stuff that destroys vinyl. Vinyl protects your paint by tearing and leaving small spots that are now unprotected from further mechanical damage as well as the elements. PPF stays intact and keeps the paint fully protected. Anything that successfully penetrates PPF is going to require panel replacement anyway. By the same token, vinyl wears out and requires complete replacement 2-3 times as often as PPF, so you're not actually saving money in the long run by goin with cheaper vinyl. I've had a vinyl wrap that I absolutely love on my Model S for afew years, but as much as I like the color I'm absolutely going with PPF because vinyl is just too fragile in comparison. I'm not the only one, either. PPF has been around far longer than colored vinyl and it is NOT going away.

How long does a vinyl cover really last? We purchased our Model Y in late 2020.

How long would you estimate vinyl lasts on a car kept in a garage? I am hoping to keep my Tesla Model 3 RWD a minimum of 10 years.
@i1Tesla7 ай бұрын
The warranty from the manufacturers says easy removal after 3 to 5 years depending on if you keep it in the garage or not. It can last longer specially in a garage, but they just talking about the removal. Heat can really affect the glue on how it comes off.

PPF holds up better. Vinyl will need to be replaced sooner and will get scratches and stuff easily. It's for people that like to change often.
@GregHassler7 ай бұрын
Vinyl is weak and thin and doesn't provide protection, it tears easily. You explained how PPF has a ten year warranty and then a minute later said "I don't think it'll last that long".

Don't care about PPF, I want to know if you found the person that gave you a door ding.
