I’ll be honest and say I don’t know “exactly” how that is done but.... I am fairly certain it’s a mixture of heating and vacuum forming. That’s why that vinyl is always so brittle if you try and remove. Usually means it was heated. A lot.

This was crazy informative! Thank you! I wonder... My plywood is crazy rough finish cheap stuff that I'd like to put a wrap over. I have no power sander tools... So I'm going to try applying drywall mud to the surface of my plywood to fill in all the grains and knots, and then see how the vinyl sticks to that! I'll respond with how it goes But if you see this sooner than later and have any better suggestions of how to give rough plywood a smooth finish without sanding - I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
@ssranon

Sooo.... did the drywall mud work?
@mpxz999
@mpxz999 3 жыл бұрын
@@ssranon absolutely terrible lol. Perhaps the 'automotive vinyl' from Amazon was to blame (I wanted the carbon fiber look for my project). But man. Any and every small imperfection in the wood showed through. Wood filler is not cheap and it doesn't go a very long way, and drywall mud doesn't adhere to plywood well at all. It easily comes loose when dry, if the wood is impacted or even slightly bent during install. Anyways... I'd either fork out for wood with a nice finish, or try a different route be time, like purchasing discounted cabinet pieces from the Ikea 'damaged section', since it a has a nice surface finish to begin with. Just need to cross your fingers that the sizes and prices are good!

I want to wrap a wooden desk. I want to minimize the amount of seams by continuing the wrap around the edges . The idea is to cut seams at the corners only (I don't care what the desk looks like underneath). Are there any drawbacks to that method? Will the vinyl tear more easily? The edges and corners of the desk are slightly beveled.
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 4 жыл бұрын
As long as edges aren’t beveled at least. You don’t want to wrap over any 90 degree sharp corners where there will be wear and use on them. If possible you might even want to ease the edges even more with some 220grit Sandpaper if possible. Cutting at corners and folding around will work fine though. That’s typically how it’s done commercially. Good luck!

Thank you, thank you! you are the answer to my prayer :) I am making a bed for my camper van project and I would like to cover the plywood bed with matte vinyl instead of painting it to make it look fancy. My concern is being a plywood, it is expected to bend some when laid on, do you think the vinyl would stay? Would it be better if I'll spray the wood with water based polyurethane 1time to make the vinyl stay more? or the polyurethane would react to the vinyl and it will make it peel easy instead? Appreciate you help.
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! first off, thanks for the kind words. To answer your question, quality vinyl really works alot like paint in that it will follow the contours and bends of what you put it on VERY well. Couple things: Just using matte vinyl on the bottom could possibly scratch fairly easy if its not a laminated type, but as long as nothing sharp is against it you should be fine. As far as finishing the plywood before you apply the vinyl, you don't have to but I would. The poly will act as a wood sealer and also a uniform surface for vinyl adhere to. Thanks again!
@leafriver8130
@leafriver8130 5 жыл бұрын
@@SquareSplinter I would probably use gloss then if you say it is more scratch resistant than matte. Do you suggest sanding the Polycrylic to remove the tiny bubbles before sticking the vinyl? I am afraid the dust after sanding might reduce the stickiness of the vinyl even if you wipe it with damp paper towel? I am curious if painting plywood with enamel would work too. I checked the options of vinyl in the signwarehouse.com and do you suggest I get the Oracal brand for this project. Once again, thank you for your input.
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 5 жыл бұрын
I may not have been very clear before... the gloss vinyl itself isn’t any more scratch resistant than the matte. What I meant was, ANY vinyl without an overlaminate like used on a car wrap can be scratched somewhat easily. Not to say it’s like fragile or anything but just be aware it will get scuffed up looking rather quickly when used on a floor application. As far as the polycrylic I would definitely sand it with like 220 grit lightly to smooth it out. Wiping it down with a damp cloth won’t hurt anything at all. Painting is also an option but not really necessary unless you plan on the wood being in a damp environment a lot. As far as the vinyl, yes Oracal is a great brand. I would go with the 751 line. The 651 Rips easily and the adhesive just isn’t very good. Good luck and send me a picture when your done! 👍🏼

@@SquareSplinter well .....the top, the front edge for sure. Both side edges would be nice. The piece is 13.5 inches wide ( left to right ) x 18" front to back × 3/4" mdf fiber board.
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 6 жыл бұрын
Well the top and front edge can be done fairly easily but adding the edges in quickly makes it pretty tough. There isn’t a super easy way to make those lines neat where they would meet on the edges. To accomplish the front edge and top though you can do that with a squeegee and maybe a hair dryer or heat gun to help you out. Cut your vinyl bigger than you need and apply the big flat top surface first working towards the edge/front you want to wrap over. When you meet the edge and everything is flat and finished on top slowly heat up the vinyl just a bit to make it super pliable. Better to have someone hold the board down for you or clamp it down... start in the middle and pull the vinyl over tight, after you pull over middle reheat the leftover again and then pull over the left and right edges down over the front as well. If you heat it up enough it will stretch and prevent any wrinkles or bubbles. After you have it pulled over and smooth heat up the edge pretty hot to “set” the vinyl on there. Be sure with mdf to try and not pull up the vinyl after it sticks down. Hope this helps.

It’s actually “new” or just new to you? On commercially produced stuff that is vinyl wrapped they typically use a very cheap vinyl that has very aggressive adhesive on it. Sometimes it can be a huge pain to remove cleanly. Depending on what your wanting the surface to look like after there is a couple ways. Hi I have a question, what’s the price & what’s the dimensions of the vinyl you have in the background rolled? Thank you!!
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 4 жыл бұрын
All of the typical rolled cut vinyl like this is 24” wide. There are specialty rolls that are bigger but 24” is common. Honestly I will have to go back and look at what roll you’re talking about. It’s been too long to remember. 😬. Thank you!

Here’s a question for you. Have you worked with the clear glossy vinyl they use to go over vinyl wrapped items for protection. I make decorative surfboards and have used epoxy for my finish. Sadly I have developed the dreaded epoxy sensitivity and now I’m looking for some type of alternative of a glossy finish. I’m trying to avoid going back to a lacquer or polyurethane finish because of all the sanding and repeat coatings you need. Just thought I would ask. Thanks. Joanne
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanne, I actually work with different types of wraps and wrap laminates on a daily basis. The clear laminate would probably work great for you because its very UV protective and fairly easy to work with. I say “fairly” because it’s typically applied with a machine. You can definitely apply it by hand but just be prepared because it’s VERY sticky and it isn’t as forgiving as typical vinyl is. But if you have a good squeegee or similar application tool, take your time and go slow I think it would be a great alternative for you. Hope this helps. 👍🏼

how would you do the edges if you wanted to wrap something completely like that all the way around?
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 4 жыл бұрын
You can definitely wrap all the way around but it’s MUCH trickier to get a good flat surface when doing it. Wrapping over a 90 degree edge adds a whole nother level of difficulty. So adding one and then another 3/4” later it is definitely possible but might take a bit of practice to get it to look good. 👊

To be specific: Automotive vinyl, not the thin, car advertising type of vinyl. Real vinyl comes by the yard in various colors and textures. They get laid over a batting to provide character and stretched and stapled to the underside (or the hidden area) of the project. For example, I have an 8 ft x 2 ft wooden framed panel that resides above the driver and passenger compartment in a truck. It is built with plywood and covered with vinyl, but not advertising vinyl. Most automotive vinyl work utilizes furniture grade vinyls and not something thin and cheap.

I don’t have one personally but it should be too bad to do. Probably easiest to wrap it around and overlap the vinyl and then cut along the length through both ends and it will make a perfect seam.

It can definitely be done. You really can use a lot of the same methods for covering smaller pieces to do the big ones. Covering a table top usually requires two people. Makes it much easier.

@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 4 жыл бұрын
You could wrap the faces for sure. Edges I don’t think would work well. You would want to sand the face a bit up to maybe 150 grit and then put a coat of water based finish on it. Then it shouldn’t be a problem at all

Wonder if anyone has tried vinyl wrap for outdoor projects such as fences? Wood fences don’t last long, solid vinyl does but is expensive. Seems like a different way to make wood much more durable outdoors and possibly save a buck.

Thank YOU! Great Video! One of the best I have seen lately! I’ve been curious about this because I’ve been trying to find ways other than heat transfer or water slide decals to use on wooden fingerboard/skateboard decks. They are made from Maple, though my concern is the concave/contour as well as bolt holes that will have to come through the vinyl. Do you think it would work? Would love to hear your input for wrapping something of this shape.
@SquareSplinter

Yes I think it would work just fine. In the case of small contours and what not you just want to be sure and use a good grade vinyl and not the real cheap stuff. Send me an email and I would be glad to give you some options. 👍🏼

How you solve a problem with wood movement?
@SquareSplinter
@SquareSplinter 6 жыл бұрын
Дмитрий Нестеренко that is a legitimate concern. I typically only cover plywood or MDF but covering small trim pieces like in the video of solid wood I don’t feel would pose a problem. The minimal movement that can happen in small pieces can easily be handled by the vinyl stretching in small amounts one way or another. Thanks for watching. 👍🏼

@derekdavis2058
@derekdavis2058 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Gk the edges are definitely a bit trickier. If you try and ONLY do the edge like you would with a traditional edge banding I just don’t think you will be able to have good results. It could work well though if you were able to wrap the vinyl around the edge of the board and cover both sides all with one piece. That way you wouldn’t have any edges that could easily be peeled up. Other than that there are some super aggressive adhesive vinyls that could work but they would be really cost prohibitive. Hope this helps. 👍🏼

Thomas Gk if you are prepping for paint on the edges you can use bondo. Apply it really thin and sand back. That gives a super smooth finish and hides the layers perfectly.
