If you were to bring quad back you would have to do it in the form of the CD. Any attempt do it on vinyl is doomed to failure. I don't care if it's SQ, QS, CD-4, or whatever, it wasn't what it was cracked up to be. Q8 for all practical purposes is kaput. It failed on vinyl before, and it'll fail again.

I think the real reason why quadrophonic didn't make it was because they were six competing formats. That overcrowded the market. If qs would have survived somehow I think quadrophonic would have been a thing for much longer. And I think qs could make a comeback.

That might have pissed a few people off, but I don't think that's the reason Quad failed. Personally, I think it "failed" because the record companies quit making Quad product. The heyday of Quad was 1972 through 1975. Heck, even DVD-HD had more years on the shelf than that!

Philips compact cassette wouldn't bulge because side 2 would become the other 2 channels of a Quad mix. So if the cassette was made for 4 channels it would be only good for that because side 1 wouldn't sound right in regular Stereo and side 2 would play backwards.

I specifically collect Quadraphonic gear and software. I have well over 650 Quad 8-tracks, many Quad Reels and roughly 100 Quad LP's. I only collect the good stuff: pop, rock, soul, country, big band.... no classical longhair stuff for me! I've roughly 80 Quadradiscs, maybe a dozen or so that came only from Japan. It took me a few years of on again, off again experimenting with CD-4 to get it working correctly, but thankfully now I can just put a record on and enjoy it. CD-4 is by far the best Quad LP format. UD-4 (sometimes referred to as UHJ) hardly had any albums released in that format. I think there's less than 12 and were mostly or only sold in Japan. QS is probably my next favorite format. It gives a good presentation and, when compared to it's discrete tape counterpart; you can pretty much say that the QS system does a half-decent job of trying to replicate what the discrete tape sounds like. QS can definitely separate the four channels, but one thing it has issue with is panning effects. The way the matrix is written, it will cancel itself if it tries to move a sound from one speaker to another. It's great at ping-pong Quad, where a sound will POP out of one speaker, but a smooth transition will cancel out at a certain point. SQ is my least favorite - - and I have a Tate 101a! I used to question whether or not an album that was available in SQ and discrete tape had the same mixdown session because they do not sound alike at all. And I was right!! Some SQ discs have completely different mixes because the SQ system is so limited on what it can do, they made more discrete mixes on tape to compensate. SQ was designed to even be MONO compatible (don't ask me why!) which I think hurt the matrix even more. Because of this, for most of SQ's life, the mixing handbook explicitly stated DO NOT MIX ANY SOUND SOURCE IN THE CENTER BACK POSITION. If played in mono, that position is 180 degrees out of phase to the front channels and will cancel itself out entirely. SQ can only do four-corner Quad if something is panning or ping-ponging around the room. Generally, when a song is playing and there's a lot going on, the matrix collapses and you get more of a "Super Stereo" than anything. The only way I can describe it is like You get a Front Left and Front Right, but instead of Back channels, you get more of a Side Left and Side Right. Suffice to say, SQ was never able to impress me and I have the fewest SQ discs in my collection. Some folks have managed to write computer programs that get the most out of SQ, but every one I've heard has weird artifacts and distortions that annoy me. Sure, they get the separation they were after, but almost at the cost of ruining the music.

Surround sound mixes can be made from tracks from a recording session where the band is playing together, just as the stereo mixes are. I'm a big fan of quadraphonic records / sound. I've collected quite a few quadraphonic records over the years and I have a 70s receiver made by Trio (Kenwood) that has a SQ, QS and CD-4 decoders / demodulators built in. Unfortunately the SQ and QS decoders of the era just weren't fit for purpose and lacked good channel separation, however I have a modern SQ and QS decoder made by Involve Audio that gives extremely good channel separation that gives near discrete levels of channel separation. The biggest achievement you can obtain when collecting quadraphonic records is getting a CD-4 demodulator to actually work due to needing a compatible cartridge and stylus that is perfectly aligned to track the high frequency subcarrier signal in the grooves. I think its really cool that major albums of the early 70s like Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon and Mike Oldfeild's Tubular Bells were intended for quadraphonic reproduction but its the Stereo mixes that inevitably became the ones that people came to know and love. Thankfully some quadraphonic recordings of the time are available to listen to digitally via downloads or physical media such as SACD, DVD-A, DVD and Blu Ray Audio

I'll add that quadraphonic vinyls aren't necessarily useless. The sound is way more detailed and has a way better audio separation/soundstage

It was not a song, it was just a potpourri of sounds and music thrown into a huge mess for a listener to test the speakers on all 4 channels. I tested “Revolution 9” on an SQ decoder, and it blows me away. I also tested any sound from one of the Motown albums using my SQ decoder and it sounds great on all 4 speakers. I did not know Motown never put out quadraphonic albums in the 1970’s.

Actually with matrixed records you *do* hear the back channels when listening to it in stereo. Matrixing just mixes the four channels down to two in an algebraic fashion (using signal inversion and phase shifting). This is entirely done in the audio spectrum. With SQ the rear information sits in the center when played in stereo. In QS the rear information sits 'outside' of the front information making the whole thing sound wider when played back in stereo.

Another advantage of playing Quad records on stereo equipement : They are a (kind of) remix of the original album . So you can hear details or parts of instruments that you never heard on the stereo mix (especially with SQ (Columbia/CBS) ) . Hi I just surfed by researching whatever happened to Quadrophonic records? I was unaware there were six competing formats, I did know there were more than 2 discrete formats, however, but during my brief forays into the rarified atmospheres, I dismissed any entries because of (No particular order ) Too many competing standards, the cost of such equipment, the lack of cross-compatibility of the equipment manufacturers,, and lastly the lack of room in my room for two more. speakers. Now that there are Digital formats I shall keep a closer watch on the market.

@@markmooch AFAIK, Quad FM was only available in a few select US cities. It failed because the FCC allowed for the marketplace to pick a winner in terms of the different formats - it was a mad house and basically none of them won. My 1970’s JVC receiver has an FM detector OUT. It sends a still modulated FM signal out to a separate Quad decoder. The you attach its 4 channel output to those 4 RCA’s. That way you use the FM dial on the front panel to tune, but get the FM Quad signal decoded to listen to even though it does not have an FM Quad decoder built in. Like an effects loop using FM out to Quad in. Many people also don’t know but AM came out with a couple mono compatible stereo versions that were superior to FM! It also died because FCC let the marketplace pick the winner. They thought it would be like 33/45 or VHS/ Beta solution.

There is an anecdote about 5.1 "surround sound" that I love to tell. 5.1 for all intents and purposes was "invented" by Brad Miller. Brad Miller was a major proponent of Quad sound back in the 1970's and was the man behind The Mystic Moods orchestra, Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs and a number of Railroad and Rainstorm sound effect records. In the 80's when he was the main man at Digital Theatre Systems (DTS) he figured that was a good opportunity to bring back Quadraphonic sound, since now it could be done digitally, on CD without much fuss. When he approached several Record Companies with the idea, they all squirmed and balked at the idea claiming to not want a repeat of the "failure" of Quad in the 70's. Brad, being the shrewd negotiator that he was, instead devised a 6-channel system recalling the early 60's 3-channel stereo ideology and summing bass to a subwoofer since, some claim, that low frequency bass sounds are omni-directional. Thus, he begat 5.1 which the record companies completely ate up as the newest, next big thing to come in the audio world. The joke was on them however, since the first releases to come from DTS were digital versions of older, Quadraphonic albums merely with a faked center and subwoofer channel. Also, the compact disc was originally imagined with a 4-channel mode, however it was never explored beyond it's original idea and no CD-player was ever equipped thusly. It's also unknown how the CD would have allowed for more than 2 channels of audio. Some speculate that the disc would either rotate slower, thus, halving it's play time OR the sampling would be downgraded to 22khz and the number of channels doubled.

The two channels on a record groove are achieved on the two sides of the groove that have a different shape and sit at a 45 degrees angle to the horizontal. An "up and down" modulation would wear out very quickly and it would be much harder to track. 🙂

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison was a quad and when they remastered it to CD they also had it in quad but in these days playback is solved with a surround receiver in the Dolby Pro Logic II music setting. You can ‘force’ anything into surround but it won’t have the experience it’s meant to provide if it wasn’t recorded that way.

I have a quad system. It's 2x Sony TA-1150s linked with an SQD-2020. I have 4 Wharfedale Diamond 10.2s and a Sony PS P7X "Precise" turntable. All the base equipment was made for 4 channel sound, with the manuals boasting about, "The sound of the future, today!" Actually you can get quad sound out of KZbin with the old decoders, since the information is still matrixed into the two channels. I've had good success with Enoch Light, Morton Subotnick, Electric Light Orchestra and others. I have a few SQ and QS vinyls, including Japanese promotional ones, my decoder does both SQ and QS. I bought the Jackson 5's CD-4 re-release but I can confirm it does nothing special on any of the decoder's settings, because I don't have a turntable with the special stylus on it. Quad's quite a lot of fun, really. It even has a trippy "2-4 channel Ambience mode" which makes Netflix and PlayStation games pop.

I've got many quad discs. You can connect your turntable to a modern surround system and play back the SQ, and QS discs with DTS NEO:6 to get a pretty good decode. QS discs work the best and sound nearly as good with NEO:6 as they do with a proper decoder. SQ discs work pretty well but its a little less discreet.

Nice video. I started to built up my gear for quad, it includes: CD-4 demodulator (JVC) including the Shibata nude stylus, SQ decoder (Sony) and a QS decoder which includes the option for SQ decodification (Sansui). I also have the Susane Ciani vinyl box. The problem I am facing is to have a good quad amplifier (vintage) I purchased a JVC 4VN-990 which unfortunately have two channels weakened, it is in the technical service now and I hope it will do a good repair. I am very enthusiastic about quad sound I do hope I will have my whole system fully working soon. If anybody has a good suggestion for a quad amp it would be very appreciated. CHEERS!

As far as I know the drawing at 01:50 is based on a slight mistake. For the best experience of the stereo effect, the speaker and listener placement should be so that the intersection of the speakers centrelines is in front of the listener, not at the spot where he is. 🖖😎👍

Side note. It wasn't really necessary to play CD-4 records with a Shibata stylus to capture the information to decode the channels. It was the frequency response of the phono cartridge itself that was important. Back in the day the Brookyln based "Grado Labs" made phono cartridges that went well into that 50Khz range that was needed and they were toted as CD-4 capable and yet they all had elliptical stylus shapes.

I'm still using my 1976 Rotel RX-802 receiver. This doesn't have a built in decoder, but it does have a speaker switch position that provides some quadraphonic effect. Basically it connects the rear speakers across (I think) the positive terminals for the front speakers. The effect of this is to send signals that are out of phase between the channels to the rear speakers only. Since a lot of this out of phase sound is often echoes it does actually open up the sound stage a surprising amount. It works quite well with normal stereo records, but if you play a quadraphonic record of the SQ or QS systems the effect is much more marked since those systems deliberately exploited out of phase sound to allow a decoder to separate each channel out. Of course it is nowhere near as good as using the correct decoder but it's very cheap! Decent quad systems in the 1970s could sound quite good, but as you say - the complication put people off. This is well demonstrated today by the way that the vast majority get their music through dreadful sounding MP3 files simply because it requires no effort. Ease of use will always win over quality for the vast majority of consumers, whether they're buying music, cars or just about anything.

I remember quad reel to reel tapes, quad 8- tracks ( I have player and a few tapes ) but I don't remember much about quad records. It seems weird to think of that kind of sound in a mechanical record and groove but I do know of a record phenomenon I discovered. I found with stereo tapes that if you ran the channels together without a ground then you would somehow hear strange tracks of the recording. I discovered it with the Beatles - White album and the song ' Birthday '. If you ran the channels together you would hear the vocals, particularly the background vocals extra loudly. The stereo recording of Van Halen - Beautiful Girls would give you only about 5% vocal volume with about 95% Eddie's guitar. Rolling Stones recordings mostly gave you background singing and rhythm tracks. I found this track separation would also occur using a RECORD and thought it amazing that so much separation could be achieved through a mechanical sound format.

I was a quad freak in high school. Firstly, I hated SQ mainly because the rear info was put at 10 and 2 o'clock barely audible. CD4 was the bomb, but not everyone could afford a CD4 turntable. 8 tracks were usually muddy and reel to reels lacked the high end. QS. worked pretty good and your present surround sound will decode it correctly, which segues to my finally subject. The first CD pressing of Carole King's "Music" (KE34949) was accidental mastered with the original ODE QS tape. So you can hear it in quad, minus the vinyl surface noise

I had and have the proper decoders and demodulator for QS,SQ,and CD-4 quadradisc,plus Quad 8 tracks plus hundreds of quadraphonic records.The Quad records will play back on Dolby Prologic 2 with good results.Point about Quadradisc they only have a frequency range of only 30 to 15,000 Hz so of all the Quad records it has the most limited range but the best separation of channels of all the quad records..On all QUAD Records you hear all four of the channels on any Stereo setup,you just need the decoder or demodulator to separate the front from the rear channels.

Wow, thanks for the rundown on quad technology, Way back when I was in elementary school, My dad and I walked down the street to go visit one of our neighbors, And our neighbor was sitting in his garage with the garage door open, and the neighbor was a long haired hippie looking guy, And he invited us to come inside his garage to us to listen to his quadraphonic disc; It definitely blew my mind with the four speakers, and the music moving around between the four speakers in his garage; Of importance to his setup, he had a joystick that he could use in order to center the particular piece of music; That stuffs was way over my little head at the time; However, I wished very badly that they would eventually come out with stereo television; And they eventually did; Yay 👍

There were also actual radio stations that broadcast in quad, some advertised as "matrix", some at least implied 4 distinct channels
@derek20la
@derek20la Жыл бұрын
Early Quad Stereo FM broadcasts used two simulcasting radio stations, each providing 2 channels for front and rear. 101.3 KIOI San Francisco was one of the first to use discrete Quad Stereo: "Since the pilot tone system of stereo broadcasting in use today is limited to two channels, a new but fully compatible four-channel system was developed. This "Dorren Quadraplex System" was designed from the start to meet the following conditions: -full compatibility with all existing equipment; -unimpaired directionality and channel separation; -reproduction of the frequency range 50 to 15,000 Hz in all channels; -minimum distortion and cross-talk between channels; -minimum signal-to-noise ratio impairment, -no additional RF spectrum requirements. Experimental use of this system for broadcasting began at radio station KIOI in San Francisco in December 1970." Unfortunately, it took the FCC until 1986 to formally adopt the system, and by then the industry had moved on and it was abandoned. Also, KIOI pioneered the use of circular signal polarization. Previously FM was only broadcast with vertical polarization resulting in "picket fencing" in areas with marginal signal.

WQHI Jeffersonville/Louisville and WVTS Terre Haute implied Quad. WQHI indicated 'matrix quad', whatever that means. Both of them sometimes sounded like they were broadcasting the main channels as the "surround sound" that you get with a resistor tap to the ground used on some cheap "surround sound" stereo systems in the late 70s. WVTS never said much on-air about what system they were using. Neither continued for very long. Mid to late 70s.

WQHIs Bill Elliott says: "These image liners went on the air in 1975 after we went 'Quad'. The quad system was a Sansui QS encoder that enhanced the stereo into a matrix (simulated) quad sound. It actually worked quite nicely. I don't know how long they left the quad encoder on line, since the concept of quad died on the vine as quickly as it came out."

If you can cancel the "cross talk" signal from the two stereo speakers you end up with a three dimensional sound stage where the walls of the listening room "disappear" and sound is all around you, just like a real performance.

Actually they did that during the early days of quad. The Hafler Circuit parallels a third speaker across the positive terminals of two normal stereo speakers so that it plays the stereo difference (left minus right/right minus left) in a stereo recording. Any information yielding no stereo difference (i.e. center panned things like vocals) would remain in the front.
