@@thatonedude1003 No they don't. Tascam/TEAC make a fairly expensive dual deck that looks good but is still not anywhere near as good a budget double deck from the 80s/90s. It has NO Dolby Noise Reduction, it cannot record on Metal tapes only on standard Ferric tapes, it uses the same Tanashin knock off mechanisms that the even cheaper decks also use, although Tascam did use a metal flywheel instead of plastic, not sure if that's still the case with the latest model. All of the other dual decks from Marantz/Pyle etc. are all pretty much identical and even less well built than the Tascam. Absolutely NO ONE makes a high quality dual deck with Dolby B/C noise reduction and HX Pro with an electro magnet erase head.

I think.... (as cassette decks are made even today, albeit not with the quality as before) what you need is... Metal tapes combined with Dolby C - S and a real refurbished old hifi deck.... Those techs really created a sound that could host a good CD recording with very little loss....
@michaelturner4457
@michaelturner4457 Жыл бұрын
I expect the wow and flutter is only mediocre, because it uses the same cheap Tanashin clone chinesium mech as all the others, as that's all that's been made now. Also it's permanent magnet erase, rather than AC, which is not so good either. Main problem with that, the tape becomes strongly magnetised, which does increase the noise significantly in the recording, as well as causing distortion. Whereas with an AC driven real erase head, it's completely degaussed. It wouldn't surprise me if this thing was DC bias as well, rather than AC bias, which makes the recording quality even worse. Although it can play all cassette types, it can only record correctly to type-1 ferro tapes. Because it doesn't have a chrome or metal bias position.

Great review. I agree 100% that the battery is a major shortcoming of this device. Built in batteries = built in obsolecense. Why can't these companies make devices with removeable batteries, like most camera companies? Wouldn't it be nice to alternate lithium batteries that you can plug into a separate recharger? The functionality and build of the device seem to be good, and playing all types of tapes is excellent. That means the mixed tapes I made on CR02 cassettes in 1993 will sound just great I hope.

It's not even a Tanashin, as they stopped making cassette mechs over a decade ago. It's just a cheap chinesium clone of a Tanashin. It's got the exact same blue plastic permanent magnet erase as all the others, which makes recording not very good and noisy.

Good video again, hello from England. This is a modern take on a once mighty format.I seriously cannot see a sort of revival of compact tapes like the vinyl revival . Question one, genuinely, where do you get blank Type II tapes from? They are the only ones worth using for recording. I would image that the cost of D0bbin B and C noise reduction licensing was too great. Tape transport choice is minimal. No one is making a quality separate deck, belts on old decks wear out etc etc BUT if you want one, get one! That’s what I have learned in 40 years of Hifi. If you will enjoy something, buy it, regardless of what others say, and that is why your reviews are good because you say what things do!

A few answers. 1. Type II (chrome) and IV (metal) tapes are no longer being produced for environmental/waste disposal issues. I think there are a few tape manufacturers that make a replacement type II tape, but it's not specifically chrome. 2. Dolby no longer licenses Dolby B or C to manufacturers, so if there is a form of NR it's self made version. 3. If you just want to play some old tapes with some of todays conveniences this should do the trick, but if you are a collector of tapes and care about their condition, I would buy a quality, serviced, used cassette deck. Cheers everyone.

all those new players are not able to playback type 2 cassettes. dont understand why, it wouldnt take much for them to add the 70 type 2 setting. and since there are no type 2 tapes produced anymore i think the best bet is to get a good deck that can record with dolby hx pro. with that you can expand your high frequency response and dynamic range a lot. the playing device doesnt need to have any kind of dolby features and since the tape was recorded with hx pro, it has all those benefits baked in the tape. a good type 1 tape with hx pro can even outperform type 2 tapes. the best thing is that those tapes would still be compatible with all the new devices that dont have dolby b or even a chrome switch.

One thing I've noticed with certain devices with built in 3.7V batteries is that the battery is what actually powers the device, and 5V USB port only charges the battery. This means that once the battery goes flat, the USB charging port won't be able to supply power to the device itself, as its only purpose is to charge the battery. I've seen this behavior in bluetooth speakers, old MP3 players and that sort of thing. Batteries of this type should be readily available, but when in desperate need, one workaround hack would be to find a DC adapter that supplies roughly 3.7V and wire in a matching jack where the battery was, but sometimes this can introduce hum and other noise.

For a cassette player to play different tape types - it should have some form of bias control, either automatic or manual. Bias is all to do with different tape types, and whether they recorded sound sounds with too much of a bass response or too sharp with too much of a treble response., you need automatic selection of bias to get into the ballpark and then a manual dial for fine-tuning it.

I sold hi-fi back in the 70's and early 80's. I was seriously into cassette in that I would record my albums onto tape and then preserve the albums by listening to the tapes. My two best decks were a Nakamichi and a Denon. I only bought one prerecorded tape and tossed it into a ditch on the road somewhere. Sound quality sucked. Fast forward to about 15 years ago and I noticed that garage sales and estate sales were giving away, or virtually giving away cassette tapes. I bought over a thousand of them. 3/4 are pre-recorded and I learned that they got better over time. I also ended up with a fair number of NOS bricks of type 1 blanks. All these tapes got me to look for vintage portable walkman style players and I ended up with five or six of them. Some with built in FM radio and some also with Dolby, auto reverse, etc., though none of them record. Using the 1/8 inch aux input in my car, I'd often play tapes in my car just for the experience. It is a lot of fun, actually. Brings back huge memories. This deck brings modern convenience to the whole experience. But to be clear, if sound quality is your main concern, Cassettes are not the answer. That's not their primary function, though.

i think a great way to imrove on this thing in the future would be to have the battery compartment modular, so you can have a lithium ion battery mudual like it does atm, but also the option to slot in a classic AA battery compartment. This would not only make it easier to just switch the standard rechargable battery once its dead it would also allow this device to be future proof in case the mamufacturer stops producing parts for it

Excellent review. I strong agree with you about the non-replaceable rechargeable battery. There is no reason for them to not to use AA batteries and design it to operate using rechargeable batteries if you choose. I used a portable CD player and did that for years, with the advantage that if the batteries are discharged and I'm out and about I can just buy a set of AAs and use them. I like the look of the unit, something plain and simple, although I'm not sold on the recording aspect. I'd rather they made it a play-only unit, and leave the recording to a tape deck.

It's a step in the right direction, but they're stuck with the poor mechanism that is available today; the wow and flutter spec is ten times worse than that of my 1990s cassette deck. Three things are needed - decent mechanisms, _decent_ new type 2 & 4 tapes, Dolby to be persuaded to licence their noise reduction systems again. However, the fact that this is well built means that cassettes are possibly being taken a little more seriously again, so here's hoping. I'm not a fan of inbuilt batteries and would rather it was powered by AAs. I recently bought an electric toothbrush and had a choice from the same manufacturer of inbuilt or AAs; the AA version was 1/3 of the price and I simply use eneloop rechargeables in it which last for months. Overall though, good to see some more impressive cassette players appearing.

while i think this review isn't necessarily deceptive, it is certainly biased on account of the fact that he was sent this cassette player directly. the audio quality sounding "fantastic" goes against the many other reviews of people complaining about hum, poor bias detection, and wow/flutter. it seems like he wasn't able to articulate anything about the sound other than that it provides that "warm analogue sound we love about cassettes" (a mind boggling statement to make regardless). this is especially suspicious that we receive absolutely demonstrations about how this cassette player actually sounds. i think it is fine if jared here likes the cassette player, that is a valid opinion. but please watch other reviews by people who don't have such a conflict of interest before deciding to buy one.

Being rather bulky and having those sharp edges this needs to have a nice case and shoulder strap, if not included at least as an option. The battery is a drawback, and I would prefer a removable/replaceable that can charge inside the unit. If it's not a three head deck you can't listen to the recording straight off the tape. I'm wondering who makes the tape mechanism, is it a mediocre Chinese clone? I think it's not that bad a price for the construction, if it holds up. I am tempted.

Why can’t anyone license the Walkman mechanism & circuitry from Sony? All of the engineering and refinement was done decades ago to provide a top notch product. This new player on offer here is like reinventing the wheel, starting at a primitive level, rather than leveraging prior technology. A non-sensical step backwards as if we experienced an EMP or other global catastrophe and had to start designs from scratch. Better to build on the shoulders of giants.

To anyone age 50+, these reviews of "new cassette player!" "new boombox!", etc. are quite laughable. All these things would have been absolute bottom-of-the-range rubbish in the days of high quality Sony/Aiwa/etc. cassette players. Certainly they wouldn't have been worthy of a review in a hifi magazine! I get it, you can only review what's available these days, but my god, this modern Chinese junk is embarrassing. Once upon a time, we had features like amorphous heads, Dolby B/C, Quartz Lock, Cr02/Metal EQ, good battery life...yes, these were the higher -end models, but even the "average" models had basics like servo-controlled motors (to avoid slow speed as the batteries drained) , fairly well made mechanisms, and Dolby B. Well, there's virtually zero chance of Dolby ever appearing on a cassette deck again, unless Dolby themselves do a 180 on their decision to end licensing of their NR systems, companies that were once top-of-the-line in these things (Aiwa, for example) no longer exist, Sony aren't interested in "the past", and I don't see any Japanese company getting on board with this revival fad. Cassettes, I'm afraid, are now in the hands of the Chinese, and their only goal with this stuff seems to be to make and sell them as cheaply as possible. Jared, try a Sony DC2 walkman (once you've fixed it's center gear, which will, sadly, have cracked by now!), and then tell me, honestly, how great this "We Are Rewind" thing actually sounds. The DC2, with a good quality tape, and the amazing headphones it was supplied with (MDR-51), sounded virtually as good as a CD. Even Sanyo made some super-nice personal stereos back in the mid-80s. We certainly have regressed when it comes to analog audio devices. All the progress that was made over the heyday of cassettes has been thrown away, and we're essentially back in 1976 with a Bluetooth chip tacked-on. It's all a bit sad to those of us who remember "the good old days"!

Hello dude! I just recently started a tape collection. And I am looking for somthing that I can play tapes over bluetooth pairing, first and foremost. Secondarily I'd like to digitize or convert tapes to an audio file. What are my options? All I've found are the 30 dollar ones on Amazon that many people seem to dislike and the one featured here on thus video. Do you have any recommendations for me? Thanks Dude!

@@jacobsmith7102 Hey there Jacob. Not sure there are a a whole bunch made for playing a tape and transmitting it via Bluetooth…but I will check and respond to you on this thread. For starters…grab a few of the cool players out now to at least enjoy the tapes. On EBay and at thrift shops I have found a ton of retro players for SUPER cheap that play my cassettes beautifully. I have a few players that play cassettes…and also will Bluetooth in your “phone’s” music to their built in speakers…but as for playing from a device to your Bluetooth speaker…I only have the limited edition Walkman from Daniel Johns (of Silverchair). I am curious as to what exists to play a cassette into a speaker via Bluetooth…so I will investigate and get back to you!

I did end up getting the Rewind. A bit disappointed it doesn't pair to my vehicle but hey, the aux cord works! And I haven't figured out how to create digital audio files on my Mac. Either I'm just getting older or this stuff used to be way easier back in the day

very good review, you showed the different types of cassette that it can play, but you did not report the frequency responses or WOW and flutter.

While I preciate the effort of the French to carry on the torch, I am shocked at how clunky this things looks. Jony Ive, if he had any hair left to spare, would go bold in a second if he had to review the design. It's just an oversized box. Compare that to the Sony Walkmen from the early 90s. Still got three of those. They still function, albeit they all run with different speeds. But 30+ years later, they still operate - and you can replace the batteries straightaway. My WM EX 50 purrs like a cat and looks like a Lambo compared to this metal box. They have to bring the size way down and reshape it.

Quite frankly I wouldn't expect to see fancy features like Auto-Reverse in a brand new cassette these days. Simply because no company in China is making auto-reverse cassette mechs now. Same with Dolby noise reduction(Dolby Labs Inc no longer licenses it), or recording to metal tape(metal bias capable heads are no longer manufactured). If done properly these things might play your tapes with a rather mediocre 0.5% wow and flutter, which to me is very noticeable. It's not like back in the day of high quality direct drive cassette mechs, that could do 0.05% or lower wow and flutter. All you get now is a cheap chinesium motor driving a rubber belt to a lightweight plastic flywheel, and good luck with that. But at least this one is STEREO, unlike many of the others that are only MONO.

Hey great you're back!🎉 Already two years😮 If the player is good and can play mostly any types, the mechanism cannot be new. 🙄 This is according to the well known British KZbin Technomoan. He foundout that the last new build mechanism is always the same in new devices and are poor quality type 1 only.🧐 So I'm confuse and doubtful of your claims. Anything I'm fogetting?🤔

I have a few questions. 1 when you said it plays other types. Does this mean when you put in a chrome or metal tape. The player will automatically select to play that type of tape setting like the tape deck. (I can clarify this question if you don't understand what I'm saying. 2 on Bluetooth, is there a hiss feedback in the blank space of the tape like those cheap portable players? Thanks

Oddly the wireless retro headphones they bundle with the player are way too low. The sound volume was not even at a mid level. It was just horribly low. I tried another wireless headset, same thing. I asked for a replacement player and same thing. I did try my Sony headphones and they were a lot louder. So I will try some of the headphones you mention. Thanks.

I just got mine and love it as you do. I paired with my Klipsch powered monitors and it sounds awesome. Am surprised the company and reviewers only focus on headphones for playback. Which is understandable since that's what most people use. But I think it should be noted that the player will pair or go directly into external speakers and sound really surprisingly good!

There's a reason battery compartments exist, this one doesn't have one and the single battery is non standart. It also has no radio buit in and the charging plug is USB, which sucks. Buying it just for being made out of aluminum is not enough. Not interested.

This is a sponsored video (as it says hidden at the bottom of the description), it's hard to tell because he didn't say in the video. He said that he was sent the player, but not that video was sponsored, he said that his thoughts were his own. Under the rules of the FTC, a sponsored video must disclose in the video that the video is sponsored (they state the description isn't sufficient). This is a sponsored product showcase and no purchasing decisions should be made based upon this video.
