After one of the general dictators tried to convert the country to communism their economy collapsed and he used the muslim minority as a scapegoat because they were already disliked and eventually it snowballed and the government even created a fake date (march of 1942) stating that that was when the muslims marched into the country but this is just plain false and it's absolutely wild that the dictatorship was just successful in brainwashing the people. Read an article on 'The Brookings' written by Lex Rieffel, today, which gives a lotta insight into the situation. "Reporters on the scene are saying that 300,000 or more members of the Rohingya community (of Muslim faith) in Buddhist-majority Myanmar have fled across the border into Muslim-majority Bangladesh in the past two weeks. The refugees have been describing to reporters a litany of human rights abuses: homes burned, women raped, men beheaded, and more. Editorial writers and columnists around the world have slammed Aung San Suu Kyi, state counselor and leader of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar, for allowing the atrocities to occur and have even demanded that the Nobel Committee withdraw the Peace Prize awarded to her in 1991. As a scholar focusing on Myanmar for the past 10 years, during which I have visited the country more than a dozen times, I know how horrible the situation is. I have been to Rakhine state and have seen the Rohingya confined to a refugee camp on the outskirts of the state capital of Sittwe. At the same time, I believe that much of the media commentary is misdirected. It fails to describe the complex origins of the problem and explain how intractable it is. The complex history of Rohingya and Myanmar Let me try starting at the top and going backwards. Why is Aung San Suu Kyi, the political leader of Myanmar, being “dethroned” by the international media and denounced by people who once idolized her? She has not publicly condemned the operations of the Myanmar military, known as the Tatmadaw, that prompted the flight of Rohingya to relative safety in Bangladesh. I will explain later why “Daw Suu,” as she is referred at times by Burmese citizens, has not done this. Why is the Tatmadaw conducting these operations? A group of Muslims, described variously as “insurgents” or “terrorists,” launched fatal attacks on 30 police outposts in the area inhabited by the Rohingya (Rakhine State, one of 14 main administrative regions in the country) on August 25. This was not the first such operation. A smaller but substantial operation was conducted last year after attacks in early October 2015 on several Myanmar border guard posts along the border with Bangladesh. Why did this Muslim group launch these attacks? The Rohingya community, numbering 1.1 million people out of the country’s total population of 52 million according to the 2014 census, has been mistreated for decades by the Buddhist majority. Specifically, the Rohingya have been formally “stateless” for more than 20 years, thus depriving them of access to employment, education, health services, and freedom to move within the country. The Muslim group has labeled itself the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army and has said it attacked the Myanmar military and police to protest the mistreatment of the Rohingya and seek full citizenship rights for them. Why have the Rohingya been discriminated against for so long? The mistreatment has deep historical roots and even involves controversy over the “Rohingya” ethnic label they have adopted. Buddhist nationalists in Myanmar insist on calling them “Bengali” to portray them as immigrants from Bangladesh-despite evidence that the ancestors of many in this community lived in Rakhine State before the British Empire conquered it in 1826, subsequently incorporating it into its India colony. In the five decades of military rule between 1962 and 2011, anti-Muslim sentiment among the majority Buddhist population was heavily reinforced by “alternative facts,” namely that the Muslims were outbreeding the Buddhists with the aim of making Myanmar an Islamic state. Compounding the problem, the 2 million Rakhine Buddhists feel that they have been oppressed by the Bamar Buddhists in the country’s heartland. The current situation and Daw Suu’s response Now let’s go back to the question of why Aung San Suu Kyi has not publicly denounced the military operations that are driving the Rohingya into Bangladesh. To answer this question, it’s important to understand her rise to power. Her National League for Democracy (NLD) party won 80 percent of the parliament seats in the 2010 election, enabling them to form the first civilian-led government in more than 50 years-despite the Tatmadaw filling 25 percent of the total seats granted to them by the 2008 constitution. A provision in the 2008 constitution that disqualifies anyone with children holding a foreign passport blocked Daw Suu from becoming president after the 2010 election (She married a British academic and has two sons born in the United Kingdom). She became the de facto leader of the government when the position of “state counselor” was created for her. She also took on the additional portfolio of foreign minister. Despite being the leader of the government, Daw Suu has no control over the Tatmadaw because the 2008 constitution created a system of military supremacy. If Daw Suu publicly condemns the Tatmadaw operations that have driven the Rohingya to Bangladesh, she will be condemning both the Tatmadaw and the voters who elected her party in 2015. As a result, her leadership position will probably become untenable. Mistreatment of the Rohingya is arguably a smaller problem for Daw Suu than the civil war that has raged in Myanmar since independence, in which the Tatmadaw has been seeking to suppress around 20 armed ethnic minorities living in the mountainous borderlands with neighboring India, China, and Thailand. Her top priority since becoming the country’s political leader has been achieving peace with these minorities. Sadly, she seems a long way from even achieving a nationwide ceasefire and the current Rohingya crisis has the potential of making this goal even more elusive. ❘ What can be done? So what should Daw Suu be doing that she’s not doing and what should the rest of the world be doing? As a foreigner living 12 time zones away and unable to speak the Burmese language, I do not feel qualified to answer the question. Many editorial writers and prominent personalities (Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama) have urged her to forcefully and publicly condemn the “counterterrorist” operations of the Tatmadaw directed at the Rohingya community. Doing so, I suspect, would lead to a kind of no-confidence vote in the parliament that would remove any vestiges of authority she may have. Others have argued that she can only retain her global credibility by resigning. I don’t believe that either option would lead to better treatment of the Rohingya. Instead, it is more likely to accelerate the exodus of the remaining Rohingya to Bangladesh. The rest of the world cannot do much beyond yelling and gnashing its teeth. There is no love for the Rohingya among its neighboring powers: India, China, and Thailand. A military intervention of the kind that took place in the former Yugoslavia in 1999 seems out of the question, especially after failing to stop Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Moreover, there are equally horrible if not more horrible situations in other parts of the world: North Korea, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, Venezuela, and elsewhere. The world has no effective mechanisms for solving these problems. The best it seems able to do is to provide token amounts of humanitarian assistance to the innocent victims of these conflicts. Finally, here is a remarkable sound bite from a Chinese source: “It’s fair to say that Myanmar is a heaven for saints who rebel and a graveyard for those who govern.” "

What do you mean by the west? And are you sure most people from anywhere are really that informed about cultures of others? Do people in China have any idea about the culture in Guatemala? Do people in Finland know anything about Indonesian culture? Judge one person at a time and even then, don't judge that much, we're all treading our paths.
@soumyaanand1487 жыл бұрын
I'm not judging any person or culture. My comment was based on the ground conditions. By west I meant the US, Europe and other parts of the developed world. Finland does come in that same definition. The truth is that the developed countries are self sufficient and never needed to know about other cultures. While the 'third world' had to constantly look up to the west, enjoy their movies and TV shows, learn the history of American and French revolutions and industrial revolution in Europe as early as grade 6 etc etc. People in the west can tread their paths without giving a second look at the rest of the world if they want to, but news channels here cover any small event in a developed world in mammoth detail. I ofcourse can't speak for every country and every person, but this is true to a large extent. It is no one's fault though, just a product of historical and material conditions. Thats why I said I'm not judging, but it is saddening.

Budai is a bodhisattva in the mahayana tradition and to some he *is* considered the Buddha. when discussing buddhism, it would be wise to consider that there are several traditions and sects within those traditions, none of which is more "right" than the others. using budai's image in this segment is probably due to ignorance on the part of the graphics people, but to the western audience, if you think about it, it makes no difference. Only those who call themselves artificially as a buddhist but don’t believe in karma and samsara and buddha’s teaching will do such act of violent. A person who name themselves a buddhist do not automatically qualify to represent all the buddha teaching and buddhism, and all the buddhist in the world.

Myanmar's Buddhism is different since they have been closed off for so many years. Firstly, its like a religion there. Secondly, a Burmese Buddhist monk told me that nowhere in their belief system says they can't defend themselves when they have to. It's also quite different from Tibetan Buddhism. They are two different forms or styles of Buddhism.
@TactlessGuy4 жыл бұрын
What you said sounds extremely dogmatic and hypocritical. Buddhism isn't about dogma or beliefs. The people who assign themselves to "believing" in Buddhist concepts are the exact ones you see in this video, because that is how people's egos become too attached to their faiths.

You shouldnt blame buddhism for this. The real problem is the military. I am seeing so many people who still talks like Buddhists and Aung Sann Su Kyi ordered it. But no. You never will understand it if you dont live in myanmar. Aung Sann Su Kyi wasnt protecting the killers(the military) but she is protecting the country from the consequences of it because now, tourism in Myanmar is weakened and so many citizens' life depends upon it. No surprise a true leader couldnt withstand the insult to innocent citizens.

She was clearly and calculatingly both-siding an ethnic cleansing. That lady is dangerous.
@imperialguardsman59293 жыл бұрын
@@MS-qd1jj I did some research on the internet and just came from facebook after reading multiple comments. All the stuff I've read more or less confirms what the comment said. There's currently a big political battle going on in Burma. What most people(in the west) assume is Aung san su kyi has control of the entire military and is attacking the Rohingyas. That is completely wrong. In fact, she is in control of a small percentage of the military and most of the higher ups in the military itself is against her. These are the same people who used to be in control before Su kyi came to power and are still salty that they lost in the election. As you can guess, these guys are very racist especially against the dark skinned Muslims and they were pretty much dictators during the years they were in power. Back in those days, they've thought of the whole ethnic cleansing thing for a while but never really did ut because it wasn't on top of their to do list yet because they still had to deal with the multiple protests, economic problems and riots going on in the country which all happened because of their corrupt governance. But when Suu kyi finally came to power, the top dogs in the military finally decided it would be the perfect time to team up with a bunch of equally racist buddhist monks and start attacking the Rohingyas. Why the Rohingyas specifically you ask? Well, they did try their luck with the Karens(yes it's a real ethnicity, not someone who'll ask for the manager), who were also an ethnic minority group but they got in one heck of a stale mate because the Karens who happened to get their hands on weapons werent having none of it. They fought back and the military decided it wasn't worth the resources as they weren't really gaining anything from the conflict so the attacks gradually died down. However, the Rohingyas were very poor people and unlike the Karens, they didn't have anything to defend themselves with so they couldn't really do anything about the military when they started showing up on their door steps and forcing them out of their homes. So to finish this off, the military's aim was to put all international blame on Aung San su kyi because she is seen as the supreme leader of Burma(she had as much power as a potato would during that time) by the rest of the world. But the main reason they tried to put the blame for the atrocities commuted against the Rohingyas was to discourage her supporters and anyone else from supporting her in the 2020 Burmese election. "We did it boys, Suu kyi is no more" said the military(probably, idk). But she won in the recent 2020 election anyways by a landslide and is pretty pissed about what the military did, so now that she's secured her power again she's currently doing political stuff that I don't wanna talk about anymore because this is my limit. And yes, the whole reason I wrote this out is because I'm bored and the research thing was really just for fun. Man the last time I wrote something this long was for my history essay.

Ideally, no one should hurt anyone else. I do not condone anything these "buddhist" killers have done, but I resent the fact that no mainstream media portrays the real situation in the Eastern countries slowly overtaken by Islam. No Muslims are not the blameless innocent in any of these situations. It absolutely do not justify killing them, but still, if anyone wants to be IMPARTIAL, they should also report the atrocities done by the Muslim governments and people along the course of history, and at the present. But We do not get many 'official' reports on those, do we now... The focus is always on the 'Muslim victims' but not the centuries of abuse that has driven the local people to reject them so completely. Hypocrisy at its best. Just a glimpse of the history that soon would be deleted from the search results if it gets too much attention: anonymous7c7.blogspot.com/2016/11/massacre-in-cht.html
